All Aboard to Profit Island

I guess Tugg isn't everyones cup of tea. Or doesn't float everyones boat.

I had a few beers with him and the production crew after we shot these videos (there are 6 in all, to be released one per Friday) and he does tell a good joke.

I'd be interested to hear one.:|

What's the difference between One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and the fiscal accounts of HIH?

One is a fantastical story of great invention, creation and storytelling flair, and the other is a South American novel

^^^^^^^^^^^ Yep - that video can be summed up in 10 words:

You need to use:

Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, Klout and Facebook.

There, I've just saved you all about 3 minutes. The video doesn't tell how to use the above, just that you need to use them.

All spin and no substance, Emperor's new clothes etc.

IT'S A PARODY!!!!!

Come on people wake up!!!!!!!!!!!

As I said in post #5:

Have to agree with Mustaka.

What was the point of that video? Clearly it was an attempt at humour through parody - which if done well can be very, very amusing. Alas, this wasn't done well and was very, very cringe worthy.

Here is a much better attempt at parody:

(and if you want to know what it was parodying you might want to watch this:

Not sure I'd want to attempt this PR stunt; it's a bit of a risk, it assumes that the audience

A. Gets it (most don't it seems, but perhaps they will eventually)
B. Finds it amusing if they did get it (most don't?)
C. Won't find dissonance with the brand and product (some seem to)

Accounting is supposed to be dull, that's what people associate with 'safe'. Will people trust their business finances to people that play imaginative jokes? I assume it's intended to appeal to the young start-ups. We had a lot of this kind of thing in the 90s - 'business is fun and us hip new kids are breaking all the rules'

It seems to me that there's a bit of a high probability of a fail here, but it'll be interesting to hear if it actually worked.

Alternatively, Duane is just having a laugh :-)

So doesnt it make sense to try and stand out with some humour. If you are faced with 100 accountants all suited and booted offering the same thing, isn't the one that makes you laugh as well going to attract your attention the most.

I appreciate the attempt at humour on a dull subject, its just this one leaves me stone cold. Its not that funny (in my eyes) and there is no real message (be it marketing or otherwise)

I don't know, it was a real question.

It wouldn't work for me is all I can say - it's all a bit too knowing and up itself for me. The hope is, of course, that it'll go viral so that it get's to a big enough market that alienating a large chunk of people won't matter.

Sorry CJD, my badly phrased response.

It does make sense to add humour in a dull environment to make yourself stand out. As soon as you stand out you start to become memorable. I made myself stand out by wearing a t-shirt plastered with the "I Love Spreadsheets" logo to business meetings, networking events and business shows. I also included it in forum signatures etc. As a result I sort of become the spreadsheet guy in a lot of peoples eyes even though there were many more experts in my field.

My approach was a bit less risky than this Tugg approach but it did work. Another example of one was a plumbing business in New York, instead of wearing overalls they wore overalls with a tux, bow tie etc printed on it so it looked they were turning up in top hat in tails. Cost them next to nothing to do but it made them stand out in a very crowded market by just adding a humorous spin to what they did.

I do 'get' it - but having pointed a few accountant friends in the direction of the latest installment - they all enjoyed it even one passing comment that it had a Dodgeball feel to it! But then those sent to watch it by me are not the 'norm' !

This thread just got interesting. Now we have teddies being thrown out of the pram and imminent law suits all over the place.

I also noted that as part of the intro was labelled series 1. I am going to guess that the studio execs are going to cancel series II. Or at least get someone in that has some real street cred and not just a stupid nickname and borderline crude innuendos.

Thanks for all your feedback, guys.

I agree with much of it - I sort of said as much on todays blog post with the latest video (3 of 6 - "Attracting Corporate Clients"

Tugg was less than impressed by your comments and those elsewhere and is now threatening to sue me on Twitter : /

does that mean he doesn't want to do another sketch? how ever will i continue living...this is such bad news..i'm crying in to my Cuppa Soup.

It's all gone a bit Pete Tong around here hasnt it.

It's really easy to shoot this sort of thing down especially when you have never done it or tried it.

Again, its easy to say "such and such viral parody was brilliant" and point at a youtube clip of someone elses clever, funny and well executed idea.

Personally, I think its a very savvy use of Social Media to create a negative/positive buzz.

If you know the person maybe, but to me this does not come across as clever, more of someone struggling - and trying to turn a bad situation into something funny - it does not work.

So, therefore I do not see it, as good social media skills.

Well, it is clearly never going to be all things to all people I assumed that's just a given with anything like this or books, or films etc.

I can see why this is a little bit like Marmite for everyone.

It's all rather emotive and subjective. It really boils down to "liked" "disliked" any more granularity than that is rather moot.

Whether it is serious or a parody, I don't think this is good for the Kashflow brand.

I don't know how some people can get so angry when it's clearly a parody.

How can you really be annoyed with something when you know it's intentional? It doesn't make any sense.

Because good parody is done around useful content where the audience actually takes something away from it.

Quite as Ling operates any publicity is good for business.

The guy is fairly well known overnight.:)

No it isn't.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/parody

a. A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule

2. Something so bad as to be equivalent to intentional mockery;

'Guru' videos like these are renowned for dishing out the same old spiel and never really giving anyone any valuable information to use. This video is emphasising that even further for the purpose of comic parody.

If it is a parody it is crap.

If it is supposed to be educational it is crap.

If it was supposed to be entertaining it was mildly crap.

Same old "expert" giving "no advice" situation.

It

is

a

parody.

fundemental flaw..it doesn't even work as a parody. it was worse than pre-school television.

if you want to create the right buzz you can take the mick and be totally useless at giving valued information but make it hilarious or news worthy..this is neither..it was just a waste of time.

it probably started off as a good idea but for the effort and time involved...they needed to come up with a better 'parody'

I hate it when people start to imply their opinion as fact.

I like it, I get it and whilst i'm not sure if it would work for everyone, it does work for me. Now to avoid any misunderstanding I will caveat the above with "In my opinion".

It's interesting that you feel "they need to come up with a better parody", I would like to see others (and naturally your) ideas and execution for a "better" parody.
