I have recently decided to sell advertising on my website, a banner for $5.00 per month on any profile page of any person or company you choose, if there is not a profile you like then you can also easily create one of any person or company all without registration.

My question is the fee I have set of $5.00 monthly for a banner is this a figure where i will be able to sell the banners or should I lower the price?

You cant just ask that.

People will need to know more information:
How many unique hits per month,
where are they from (UK, Europe etc)
Where the banner will be

But for $5 a month probably not. The general rule (or atleast used to be) would be $1 per 1000 hits your site gets.

A big fat zero for me.

I've just searched and found nothing ...inc names I would expect to find there.

Maybe you need to get some data in their first ...and then some traffic ;)

Dont know why I'd want to either- I searched for my company and we dont exist. We do on google (top pg 2): Ava Gardner beats us easily (3 entries page 1), which for an unqualified "ava" (for free) is better than I'd expected. We normally look for terms relating to the flexible staff bank and temp agency software sector to give us www.ava.co.uk. I think google have this pretty much sown up - if not bing are chasing as hard as they can. I'm out.

Paying for advertising has to have a target audience behind it, It looks ok but not much shows up. If you want adveritisng supply "web stats" so people can view history & potential.

The data used to populate the site is coming from users adding profiles and information on companies and other people, we do not use spiders to gather information rather than let the site build itself.

Well I think until you have a database large enough to make it worth even visiting (chicken and egg imo), then it really isn't worth even thinking about people advertising on it, let alone how much you should charge.

And you have to ask the question 'why would I bother entering info about me or my company, when there is no info on anyone else there...'

Ho hum...

As an expert in this industry, you have too many barriers to entry.

Business and People search isn't unique, and adding the 2 together won't make it so. Secondly you have no backfill, and thus no reason for users to search, and so no product to sell to advertisers.

This market is so saturated, you cannot survive with another 20'000 B2b directories not making anything either. Its not unique, and you won't have the cash to force it into the market, never mind staying there.....

You need to build this up to at least 20k of businesses for people to search, which will take you many years, and by this time the general directory search market will be over with the introduction of mega-portals or vertical directories or better.

You will need to spend hundreds of hours getting this filled yourself, hand inputting the many businesses for free. Even if you're prepared to do that, you'll be working for many years for free, for nothing, only to have yet another copied idea where others have huge track records and will beat you at every turn.

Google didin't make anything for four years! and thats Google.

As others have said, at the mo it's a dead duck!

$5.00 per month is reasonable if the web traffic is there - as the website currently stands I wouldn't pay 50p per month!
I'm out too!

Hi guys, what would you say is the best way to approach companys offering advertising space on your own website?

Obviously it's key to include figures such as hits to your site, but what else would swing the decision in your favour?

From what I can see from your website, you have nothing, no originality, the idea you got has been saturated to incredible heights, its impossible for you to survive, compete or win with your biz model and you've been beaten before you even begin this project.

If you must do the search engine thing - be unique and offer something the Googles of the world don't. Thats your only hope.
