Just curious if anyone here is successful in making a living on their own from the internet, either through selling, affiliate schemes or whatever?

It is the dream and I wanna know if anyone is living it lol

yes. I work for other businesses, but my own sites do me ok, they pay for the bag of chips on the weekend and the odd bottle of lager at the rugby.

Not sure what you will gain from asking though other than knowing that people are making some moeny doing what you would like to do :)

So how far down the line are you with earning? The first £1 is the hardest, once you master making a single £1, it is just a case of duplication and volume

There are no get rich quick schemes (that work) or easy options i'm afraid but of course there are people out there that make a very good living from the net and without big companies, expensive offices and staff to back them up.

In my case (since that was the question!) I work part time from home with very little overheads, purely internet based and earn more than than enough to do what I want when I want without having to worry. (not quite got a Ferrari yet as the previous poster did :p )

It was not always part time though and to make anything a success you gotta put in the hours and learn some new skillsets. Start with basic SEO, get yourself a cheap coder (I recommend from Romania), find a niche, work one step at a time and everything is possible :-)

Edit: Also plan to spend the next 2 years broke if it's going to be your only source of income!

Without the internet my business would have not have expanded as it has. But it is a not a get rich quick scheme you still have to work hard and keep your standards high if you want to be successful.

Just a quick note here

I quit the curse of a word (J.O.B) Just Over Broke and yes you can make a living online.

Here are some things that have help me, and may help you

* To be very disciplined.
* Self motivated.
* Clear goals and ambitions , be practical on want you want to achieve
* Prepare for continuous changes also to take good criticism.
* Not to be greedy as this is a business which also needs funds to run it.
* Always sharpen your skills and network with like mined people in your field as they will tell you how hard it is.
* Discover how to seek new opportunities all the time and how to take advantage of them.

Just like any other business either offline or online you will need to know whats your best skills are to be successful .Most government start-up courses will tell you the same, its no diffident from any business on the high street

(expect some are closing due the the so called rescission)

Hope this helps

There are indeed Get Rich schemes that work on the internet as there are elsewhere.

The way it works means that you got the result only with hindsight and this should be known as a 'Got rich quick' scheme. I have got rich quick a couple of times and have also gone the other way a couple of times.

Caveat Emptor (buyer beware). Think about the business not the getting rich ! Those who set out to GRQ very often come a cropper fairly quickly.

Hmm Sorry internet marketing dose not arrive in a tin can or a NVQ Course (just kidding)

But nevertheless my great wise great family member from the far east told me was "nothing is new is the world" and bingo it all came to light on how to approach marketing products.

Marketing is marketing so if you wish to be good at it learn some of the basic principals on how to ads value to products and service also generating good ROI.

The 7p's in marketing are often missed here so consult an expert who know's what this means or read up on this and apply it to your business model.

All the very best.

To answer the OP question - I make a living online. And I run a (non-profit) forum with many others who specialise in running purely online businesses and who share what they've learnt running such businesses.

Over the last decade I've bought into websites making money in a whole variety of ways - from affiliate programs, contextual advertising, lead generation, membership, domaining, text link sales, electronic product delivery, brokerages and several others. My current portfolio of sites is largely self-running, and I consider myself semi-retired. I'm 45.

Internet marketers would like you to believe that the only way to make money online is to be a marketer (I wonder why they like you to think that). Come up with one good domaining idea - like the guy who made millions years from redirecting .co typos to .com - and you'll make your fortune. Or buy a website that's already been marketed by someone who's getting a commission (like a vendor site promoted by affiliates).

I've never read a marketing manual or guide ever, I don't understand HTML and CSS and all that complicated stuff. But I can read a balance sheet, am good at spotting scams and had a bit of money to acquire my businesses rather than build them.

If I could do it ...capitalise on your strengths and you could do it too. Becoming an expert marketer is also one good way.

Stay current, IM is one of the fastest changing industries. To be successful in it you need to be creatively and academically brilliant so keep your brain sharp (like a butcher sharpens his knives) :D find a method that works, scale it up and dont give up. I'm 21 and I've only just started to earn a living after two years of working hard at it.

If you have a dream the best advice I can give you is live it every hour that you have. You will find out soon enough if the dream lives up to the reality. Some do , most do not.

There is no short cuts so part of the dream has to be enjoying everyday on the journey. You also never get to the end of the journey, just various junctions, then the final dead end:rolleyes:

My dream as a kid was to travel the world. The only challenge was to find the best way of doing so. I have changed the ways of doing so over the years but 30 years this month after I started I am still at it. Vienna this week Budapest next and Morocco next month.

The internet is a very powerful and liberating system do not just think of it as a way of making money. Think how you can make it work for your lifestyle, your education, etc. When you nail that chances are you will make money but the money will only be a part of it.

Not that I need to prove myself to anybody but Google page 1 for "unsecured loans" pays the bills. If you'd like me to talk you through my business model in depth, feel free to pop over to leicester..£50 an hour :p

Yep, I run websites and Internet services (all my business is generated through the web), and the best advice I can give you is to approach it just like a regular business.

It takes time, effort and dedication to make a go of it, just like any other business.

Good luck to you.

95% of my sales are through the internet, 5% local retail. Without the internet, we would not be in business. However, thanks to the internet and especially Ebay, margins are smaller now than ever.
If online sales are what you are interested in, I would say it is important to find a niche market that the big players are not in, so you are able to maintain a reasonable margin.
With a niche product, you will have less competition in doing well on Google and less competition on price, if you succeed in getting traffic to your site. With a nationwide or even worldwide market place for your niche product, although very specialised, the market place can be very large.

Top Marks on this one you have got the correct attitude.

well well, people get worked up over other peoples success don't they. and you don't need a degree to get anywhere in the world, just because you have proof that you have been "dedicated" to learning, doesn't mean that self teaching is inferior, I mean after all, University is all about self teaching and using your own initiative, we all have brains, use them

In my opinion, there's nothing you'll learn at uni that you can't learn on youtube/wiki. As long as you know WHAT you need to learn, and you're self motivated, you won't need a hefty student loan to learn it.

I dont get worked up about peoples success, its just you get a lot of people who talk as if they have had massive success and they have not.

Well done to the guy who seo'd for unsecured loans thats a really good achievment.

They talk it up in the belief it will excite the punters enough to get them dribbling at the mouth and pulling their wallets out. The first rule of everything from Amway type network marketing to the common or garden internet marketer is ... to talk a good game. Think positive, talk positive (and nobody will guess that you're full of BullS___).

I buy web businesses and frequent places like businessesforsale.com and, at the cheap/junk end of the market, flippa.com. Across the board people selling their web businesses make a huge deal about the more trivial of accomplishments - hey I'm #1 in Google for "cheap, blue and white striped trousers with green buckles - and that's usually to hide the fact that they've screwed up on the main deal -generating cash flow.
