Help please!- performance management

Hi all, I'm currently studying a business management degree and would REALLY appreciate help from some business owners, just by answering a couple of questions!
1) How do you define or measure high performance from your employees?
2) What performance management processes do you use?
3) Do you think performance management increases high performance?
Any answers would help me out immensely, and as I said would be so hugely appreciated.
Thanks!

Winding-Up Petition - Advice

To cut a long story short, all options have been considered for my business. Due to a shareholder dispute a winding-up petition to the courts is my only option as Director.

My question is...
When filling out a winding-up petition as the sole Director of the company to be wound up, do I petition as an indivual using my name and home address, or do I use my details, but the companies address as I'm petitioning as a Director?

Thanks everyone. I hope that makes sense! Any help would be hugely appreciated if anyone has the time. I cannot afford solicitor advice right now and the sparce winding up petition samples I've found online are rarely from a director petitioning to close down their company in the same circumstances.

trying to get phpMyAdmin on nginx to work

I have a test website on a localhost machine. Apache has been the web server of choice but I decided to try nginx.

Because of my poor understanding of nginx configuration, while I am able to serve static pages, I am having a hard time trying to get phpMyAdmin to work.

I keep getting 404 - not found type error when trying to access it. Googling the issue seems to suggest it's a common problem, tried a few things they suggested but still no luck.

anyone come across this?

Thanks

I have some niche ideas that I’m hoping I can find a factory to team up with. I’m going to Turkey next month, a part from a few addresses in Istanbul I haven’t got any idea where to find factories that work with start up business. Anyone knows any small clothes factories in Turkey or Europe please?

Please feel free to leave any tips or advise.

Which business bank account is the best?

I have recently set up a limited company in the UK as I'm launching my own e-commerce business in the near future. I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on which company I should open a business bank account with. When the business starts trading, I'm hoping to be selling/shipping approximately 100 units of product per week throughout Europe, but mainly in the UK. Therefore, there will be various small transactions running through the account each week.

On this basis, can anyone suggest which bank I should go with or which ones I should definitely not go with?

Thanks!

Where do you find participants to answer your market research surveys?

This is my first time posting here, not sure if this is in the right place. But I'm currently in my market research phase and would love to get answers on my market research survey. I'm considering using Survey Monkey's paid service to get a decent number of answers but would rather not to since it's an expense I can barely afford at the moment.

Does anyone have any ideas? Or were successful when going through this on your businesses?

When registered as both contractor and subcontractor .....

We are a VAT registered limited company, and the sole director/employee is registered as both contractor and subcontractor. When acting as the contractor using subcontractors, we deduct the appropriate tax on their labour and forward it on to HMRC.

I’m sorry if this sounds a bit confusing but would appreciate clarification in the following senario.

If we are ourselves subcontracting to a construction company but also using subcontract labour that we are paying ourselves, when separating out the labour element of our invoice so that the construction company can deduct for CIS tax, do we only account for the labour relating to our company employee, as the tax for any subcontractors we might have used would have been deducted by us when we paid them. If we showed the total cost of all of the labour used and the construction company deducted tax from that figure, then HMRC would be getting the tax in respect of our subcontractors twice because we would already have taken the tax from them when we paid them.

Also, if we sent only our subcontractors to work on the job (but it was still us paying them), would we still have to separate out their labour when we invoice the construction company, as again we would have already deducted the subbies tax when we paid them.

Thanks.

Business Closure

A business has year ended 31 May 2022 and covid has pretty much killed it. It's turning only £80 a month so needs to be shut down. For a final accounting period could 31 August 2022 be used providing bank account is closed by then, all creditors including HMRC paid and all marketing stopped? So submit accounts for15 months rather than 12 months and 3 months separately?

Commercial Lease - Roof Repair Responsibility

Good morning,

I run a cafe, we rent from a landlord and have had damage to the roof. The landlord has paid for roof damage before as well as internal structural damage, on the basis that our lease says he needs to keep the property in fair condition.

He is now saying that we are responsible for the repairs and is refusing to pay. I have sent him the evidence from our lease that says it is his responsibility - but he is now saying it is vague and is asking the estate agents who drew the lease up what their intentional meaning was for the lease. He used to work there so I don't feel like they will be impartial.

Would this have any legal bearing or does he need to go off what is states exactly in the lease?

Many thanks for your help,
Rosanna

Tax advice on Limited Company

Hi,
Back in March I took an outside IR35 contract and was advised to open a Limited Company for it.
I set everything up and worked 2 weeks until I realised it wasn't the right fit for me and I had a better offer from an employer which meant I left the contract with only 2 weeks paid.
Does anyone know what's the best way to pay these taxes and close my Limited Company? Is there a way I can add the taxes for it into the taxes I pay with my current company as an employee?
Thanks!

Business recovery// secured loan on a private property

Hello all
In 2019 I was about to be made redundant and my employer was going to start insolvency proceedings. However, I bought the company shares in lieu of redundancy and was able to inject enough cash in order to stabilise the company to the point where creditors would actually talk to us about sensible repayment plans. Of course, I could have walked away, set my own company from scratch and probably have made a fair bit of money by now- but "doing the right thing" got in the way.

Cut a long story short, we survived Corona, partly thanks to BBLs, but early 2022 was pretty poor for us. However, in the past six months we have really become busy and quite profitable, although the company still has significant debts.

I have inherited a residential property in the meantime and I have looked at securing a loan against it to provide turnaround funds and also funds for expanding the business going forward, as we really seem to have fallen on our feet as our competitors have stumbled from theirs.

However, the company naturally has a pretty poor credit rating and its past performance is really not of the level of the size of loan I am looking for- certainly a non-secured loan would be a no-no. I had asked several brokers and they assured me that anything is possible and that there are lenders who will be prepared to loan on the strength of the secured asset, rather than the strength of your business past/ projection- but they don't seem to be achieving anything.

My question is whether such lenders actually exist or will be up against the same problem no matter which broker I go through. I know the obvious answer is to sell the property, but I am really trying to avoid doing that unless I absolutely have to. Likewise I do not want to wind the company up and start again- although that was an option a few years back, I am now associated with it and it would damage my reputation and make it difficult to move forward with suppliers etc.

NB I did search the forums before and found several similar threads, but nothing that quite answered what I wanted to know.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA
Stuart

Multiple logins for Wordpress site + data table

I’m going to need a system for a new WP site that allows anyone that applies for access the ability to upload data in the form of best times for a competition.

(Only to upload their scores, nothing else)

The table needs to be automatically updated once the score is submitted, and I need the ability to manually remove anything if needed.

Do any of you have any experience with this sort of thing? If so what is the best approach/plugins etc.

Cheers

Benefit in Kind

Hi All,

Two questions please:

1. Some employees in my company organised an offsite to discuss company strategy which included the cost of travel to the venue, a meeting room space, food and overnight accommodation. This was paid for by the company.

Should all these costs be included as a taxable benefit (via a PSA return) or are they simply for business purposes therefore are exempt.

2. Some staff have subscriptions to the financial times which they use for work and is reimbursed by the company. Should this be considered a benefit or for business only

Thanks,
Nicholas

Start up

Hello all. I am contemplating starting a Savoury Pie and Pasty Business. We intend to aim at a range of good quality Products including range of Gourmet Pies etc. Too many are in honesty just gravy basically and of course have very low actual meat content. I envisage selling via online, Markets , Events and possibly outside sports venues. We would be based in Wales and indeed source the majority of our fresh Products from growers in Wales and use that as selling point. I realise that various exist already but we are going to rely on quality and not mass production . We will not be producing 7000 a day off one line and ours will basically be hand made. Any views re potential viability please. Of course we will wait and see what Truss is going to do the ever incrasing rediculous Energy Increases. Regards Vivian.

Company van registration - personal name or limited company?

Hi all,

I am looking to purchase a van for my business (Limited Company) and i am unsure if I should register the vehicle in my personal name (sole director) or the conpany name. The vehhicle will be financed and the price will be plus vat (company is vat registered). The van will only be used for business.

I have looked online to see what others do and they usually state the same thing "the registered owner is not the legal owner"...great, i get that but what are the pros and cons of registering in my name as apposed to the Limited company and vice versa.

It would be good to hear from any directors on here who purchased a van through their Limited company, are the only driver of the van and solely use the van for business and find out how they registered the log book.

Thank you for your time in advance.

Tax code… working two jobs…

Question!!

I am currently on career break from Job 1. I am working with Job 2, and have decided I’ve had enough and going back to Job 1.
However… the two are going to overlap.. however… I am owed holiday from Job 2 which I am taking as my notice period… but I also have jury service which Job 2 has asked for proof of.
I am allowing a cross over of both jobs by using holiday from Job 2 and jury service and then to cover my jury service from Job 1 I am using holiday.
Neither know anything about the other. I’m so fed up about Job 2 I have jumped back to Job 1 early.
My tax code for Job 2 is 1160 and my tax code for Job 1 is 1250L so I know I’ve been paying too much tax for Job 2, which is fine, but I want to make sure that when I’m paid for both jobs that Job 2 will charge me the 20% right? And that the tax I’ve already paid extra will cover any shortfall?

Where can I get practical Shopify user guidance?

We've just moved form Magento to Shopify and we now need someone to advise on practical issues like:
- how do we import orders from eBay/Amazon into Shopify (i.e. what app to use)? We used to have M2E Pro on Magento but they don't do a Shopify module
- how do we run multi-currency site that allows us have independent GBP and USD pricing?
- linked to that, how do we do it with out having to use sub-domains
- linked to the previous query, how do we have it so Klarna appears on the GBP site but not the USD site

..and so on. I'm not sure it's pure developer work we need - or maybe it is - but we certainly need help from someone who has run a multi-currency Shopify site.

Can anyone make a recommendation please?
