Diverse list from me:

Spirited Away (Studio Ghibli)
Shutter Island
Wolf of Wall Street
Lawless
Inception

I think its impossible to make these lists though....it changes so much from time to time, and depends on what springs to mind as you're going through.

Fight Club is a weird one...I used to count it among my Top 5 but I think it makes its way into a lot of people's lists just by way of "Cult Status". Its like a self-fulfilling prophecy - people say its one of the best films ever, so everyone continues to think so.

Controversially, I think that the first half of Fight Club is one of the best half-films ever. Once it gets into the "Project Mayhem" stuff though, its all a bit blah.

In no particular order...

Pay it Forward
Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
Powder

And then... Any DC/Marvel film.

The Godfather,
Scarface,
Rocky,
The Martian,
Shrek - I have watched it around 20 times this month, sometimes once straight after it finishes with my 18 month old and oddly, it has not got old yet.

Although it was difficult to leave out Reservoir Dogs, Forest Gump, Saving Private Ryan and Warrior and The Warriors (from the 70s or 80s).

I liked a lot above and similarly have many other likable films so off the top of my head:

  • The Bridge over the River Kwai
  • The Last Valley
  • LA Confidential
  • Man on Fire
  • LOTR trilogy (cheat, I know 3 films yet think you will let me get away with this one)

There are so many good films it is hard to name just 5. I am a bit surprised at how limited many of the suggestions are. With the possible exception of Inva's selection they are all pretty safe bets with a slant towards the mainstream and violence.

Off the top of my head I'd list the following........

What's Cookin' directed by the great British director Gurinda Chada it tells the story of four different families preparation for their Thanksgiving meals.

Goha, which I haven't seen since its release. A Cannes prize winner it is now vary hard to find. It starred Omar Sharif and was the debut of former Miss Tunisia, Claudia Cardinale. Failing that try Black Orpheus from the same period.

Lagaan was Bollywood's biggest budget film when it was made. Much better than other films of the genre. After watching the film read the book of the making of the film by one of the minor actors, "From Balham to Bollywood".

For comedy can any film beat The General by Buster Keaton?

For my fifth choice it is a toss up between Cinema Paradiso and Manon du Source.

Years ago, when a student, I ran a couple of film societies. If you have never seen these classics I suggest ......

Seven Samurai
Citizen Kane
Battleship Potemkin
Jules et Jim
La Grande Illusion
Don't shoot the pianist
Death of a cyclist

At no 1 ... My Cousin Vinny.
When the judge asks him to stop swearing and he responds with ‘there’s a f*****g surprise’ is brilliant.

Then in no particular order:
2) Saving Private Ryan
3) Zodiac (because I found the story very interesting and not that it was a great film)
4) Cool Hand Luke
5) Forrest Gump

There are lots of great films though.

Shutter Island was mentioned earlier a couple of time and it is good but once you’ve seen it, it’s all a bit of a giveaway. Probably one of the best twists to a film though.

I can still sit and watch all the Lord of the Rings over and over.

I’m also surprised Clockwork Orange didn’t get a mention (unless I missed it).

Bringing some culture to the thread? OK, well I ought to mention in dispatches;

Downfall <- Bruno's performance is top drawer
The Dark Knight <- mainstream violence with Heath Ledger's masterclass
Whiplash <- Remarkable acting in a £2.5 million budget film
