You should add a robots.txt file and sitemap.xml I think your .htaccess file needs looking at too..

I'm going to recommend you take the site down temporarily as you do not want Google indexing that site as it currently is - sooner rather than latter is my STRONG recommendation

That's fine, it doesn't matter who is doing it - whoever is doing it needs to take it down so it does not get indexed by Google as it is.

no data normally means WMT hasn't known about the site long enough.

Also I disagree with the advice to take the site down, just put a 'being rebuilt' message up and add contact details.

Once the site goes live, go into WMT and force google to crawl and index the site.

Be consistent on Google to be able to index your site page because there are tons of pages are crawled and indexed. Try to submit your page in different platform to give a diverse signal to the search engine and tell them that your site page exist.

I am not really sure taking your site down is a good idea.
Google indexes your site 1st and then you take it down?
That's not a good way to introduce your site to Google.

Best bet is to slowly work through the list of crawl errors.
It can take a lengthy amount of time but it should pay off.

Rather than taking it down, just update the robots.txt file to ensure the page isn't being crawled - and then obviously ensure it is again when your new website has launched.

can someone explain why they think it is a good idea to block search engines? Google isn't dumb, it knows sites get rebuilt, and hiding stuff is never a good idea.

Let the spiders crawl then when your site is ready, tell google to index it by using the fetch and index command in WMT.

Well it sounded as though his website was already ranked no1 based on his keyword. So rather than google crawl your site and know it isn't what it thought it was.. stop it from being crawled and then just reindex it when the content is relevant again.

Not at all, very reasonable question you asked.
With the site rank of 1, its important to try and keep it there. Adding a blank page was a bad move in all honesty. It would have been better to add a detailed holding page with keywords still featured, or better still to replace what was there, with the new site.

Sorry - just joined, so hope you don't mind adding Reduce your Page title to a max of 55 characters - you're keyword stuffing with the temporary page i.e.
"lmc removals Kent | man and van- house removals- removals kent – removals medway lmc removals Kent | man and van- house removals- removals kent – removals medway".
Your Description is too short and I'd definitely put some relevant text on the actual page - Google doesn't need more than a paragraph or two mentioning what you do and some of the areas you cover to consider it relevant enough to rank you well. If you do this whilst building your site you won't do too much damage to your existing positions
