Hi, I wanted to ask you a question. Perhaps my question is not entirely appropriate, but I don't quite understand who might need Voip when people are already using Zoom for business communication or making banal phone calls.

VoIP providers assign you a phone number that anyone can dial from any phone (you can usually transfer in an existing number). Using Zoom, Skype, Teams, etc requires whoever wants to speak to you to download the right software/app if they don't already have it, create an account (optional with some software/apps) then add your username or email address to their contacts. It's much easier to just dial a phone number, especially for people who are non-techy or have slow or unreliable broadband.

Banal phone calls! What are those? ;-)

VoIP is just the underlying technology that all voice communications now use in various ways - including Teams, Zoom, mobile and landlines etc

If your question is more like 'who needs a telephone?' then it's a wider question. Currently the answer is 'anyone who wants to be able to call anybody else just by dialling a number.'

Mum and dad have recently had their BT thing upgraded. There is no landline. It's all VOIP now.

@cjd Aren't all PBX and PABX VOIP these days?

Teams is effectively just client software. Yes, you can call anyone else with Teams with it, but have you got Teams on your phone? Has your mum? You would need to add a VOIP provider to it if you want to call anyone else.

You can get a phonenumber with Skype that anyone can call.

The next time your house is on fire, try Zooming the fire service.

Who might need VoIP? Everyone who wants a traditional 'land line' phone number.

Maybe the days of calling this VoIP are over - it's just a phone line!

VIOP is major part of our office now and has been for 15 years . The App can divert it to anywhere and you can mange an office system from your pocket telephone .

I am surprised that this question is being asked on Europe's premier business site!

Yes, all new 'box-on-the-wall' PBXs are VoIP now tho' there are still some legacy stuff out there using VoIP converters. They were generally plugged into ISDN circuits but they're defunct now. too; it's all broadband (IP) now.

The office-based hardware PBX is dying generally too -VoIP or old analogue - being replaced by the cloudy stuff that is cheaper and no maintenance.

All telecommunications are VoIP-based now, often end-to-end but always somewhere in the transit through networks.

Whoever said above that we need to stop talking about VoIP now, it's just the new technology used to make telephone calls is right, we never used to call the last telephone service TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) but given our name I'm rather hoping it sticks around a while longer.
