I would try focusing on organic seo search engine optimisation you won't benefit instantly but after a few weeks your notice a change depending on the keywords you choose.

Hi Gemma,

Do you have access to advertise to passing trade? If so Banners work very well??

Otherwise - Identify your best market audience, and advertise in the magazines, noticeboards and places they are likely to come into contact with your advert. Also if you can identify a business who targets the same audience you could suggest a shared advert and split the costs.. I must say £150 / month won't go far.. most marketing campaigns take time to recover the investment and you have to stick with it for at least 8wks before you can accuratly measure.. best of luck..

Andy Thorne, that research is incredibly biased and misleading. Promotional items are a very inefficient and ineffective way of advertising a small business, in the vast majority of cases.

So your discrediting a well known and highly regarded trade body? The BPMA conducted the research and the stats are fact not just someones opinion.

I also disagree, promo products are a great way to promote a small business, as you don't need a huge budget to achieve results.

Anyone could do that research and get the data to show pretty much whatever they wanted. It proves very little, and is a fairly good indication of everything that is wrong with how most people measure the success of advertising and promotional marketing.

They are hardly impartial either are they.;)

If you have a website (or even if you dont) Getting listed on Google Places / Maps is a great way to generate traffic / business. More and more people are using the net to search for local stuff so being high on the search engines is more important now. If you need any help with this just ask, its not expensive to do and it can take around 5-6 weeks to show up on the Google Places listings.

You can best promote your business in eBay and Craigslist. I suggest that you also link with parenting blogs and join forums with the same niche. You can also register on directory sites. Hope that helps.

Hey Guys, I just want to know when you started your business how did you get your first customers? How did you know where to advertise? Did you go mad advertising everywhere and realise something specific that worked?

I want to advertise however I dont have a huge budget and I really need a guaranteed return on my investment of advertising. I want to target party people or parents planning kids parties

Advice required

Gemma

You need to understand who would be your customers be and which location or which market you will target. You have to study the behavior of your customers as well to increase your sales.

A couple of ideas..........

Attend your local business networking group. Normally a breakfast meeting and can cost around £10, but you get to meet other business owners and get tips and ideas, plus you'll have the chance to stand up and give a 60 second pitch for your business.

Sticker in the back window of car advertising your website.

You mentioned you were looking at a shop - could you negotiate taking it temporarily, say just over the Christmas & New Year period?

Also has you've been selling on eBay, do you now have a database of who has brought from you so you can send out offers in the future? You can contact them by post or email and include a link to your website, this may generate extra sales and they could potentially pass your details on to friends & family. Also do you include leaflets etc. in with the product when you post out?

Free website listings like Gumtree, Freeindex, or specialist forums

I think that we shouldn't automatically discount traditional media in the long run. No one can really tell whether this dip in return will only be in passing (at least until the internet becomes old and boring too) or will be permanent.

Jhonny - My main customers I would guess would be students who like fancy dress and parents who are throwing kids parties or need costumes for a school event

I'd go where your potential customers already spend their time rather than trying to be everywhere. For most businesses, a combination of SEO, Google Business Profile, relevant social media, industry directories, and being active in niche communities works well. If you have a small budget, test Google or Facebook ads first and see what actually brings enquiries before spending more.
