A simple Antivirus product is no longer sufficient. You need a cybersecurity product that also protects you from phishing sites, malware in webpages, network intrusion, insecure WIFI etc. The FREE AV products really only do basic malware scanning.
Most people are not technical and are oblivious to the fact that their broadband router is being scanned on a daily basis, looking for open ports, vulnerable firmware, exploitable services or attached devices such as NAS or IOT.
Even if you never visit any dodgy websites or download executable files, you are still vulnerable.
Email is still one of the most common delivery methods for malware, usually via phising emails that convince you they are from legit sources.
Any website that you do normally visit could get hacked and infected with malware and start sending you such phishing emails. An astounding 37,000+ websites get hacked every single day.
Personally, I use BitDefender, which is a full cybersecurity suite and in addition, it also scans your WIFI network for any vulnerable devices and tells you whenever another device connects. They also have a good family deal, allowing you to install it on unlimited devices, which I make good use of as I have 6 people in my family, which equates to a lot of devices.
Kaspersky is also one of the best, and I used to use this previously, but ended up switching to BitDefender for the better pricing due to my increasing number of devices.
I would never touch McAffee or Norton/Symantec with a barge pole. They are as bad as the malware, and if you ever need to contact them for support, you may as well hang yourself.
