So, it is now possible to buy tld's using blockchain technology (I never thought I would start a thread about blockchain).

Putting the techie stuff to one side, you can now create a tld e.g. .ukbf and resell domain off it it.

Anyone her tried this?

I have a project that this would be great for, however, that I can see, you can't sell the domain via the likes of WHMCS or Blesta and you cannot host the domains using CPanel or Virtualmin. Does anyone know better than me on this?

Mmmmm. I am doing something similar to the uk.com thing, but very much in the open.

This appears very different, but it is a leap from the traditional way of doing things and until they bridge working with traditional methods, I cannot see it going mass market, although there are applications!

They are not official though and will never be supported in the same way as "normal" DNS. You can make your own TLD but it costs a lot.

I can remember sites that needed special browser plugins from at least 20 years ago!

As you say, a complete non-starter for Joe Bloggs but perhaps Dodgy Dave interested in illegal content would find a use for the technology.

You can make your own TLD but it costs a lot.

That is why this appears an interesting solution!

Not familiar with this, but "web3" seems to be a term for decentralised internet (not necessarily web related) systems.

Someone running a a TLD seems counter to the decentralisation aim. The people who designed DNS did feel they had made it too centralised, but this does not seem to be the right way to fix it. Is what you are looking at an an alternative root DNS system? Those are pointless and a bit scammy in my opinion.

There are already multiple decentralised technologies like IPFS or Tor. Some keep DNS though, and that includes some of the most useful - the Fediverse type stuff looks interesting.

I very much wish there was one, but ICANN has firm control of it and multiple roots breaks things - because you can have competing versions of the same TLD.

People have been trying this since Alternic in the 90s, but its no going to work without support from DNS servers.

Even support from browser vendors is not enough because you need other services like email etc. to resolve
