To keep it short, and simple, our company website is: https://hammervm.com - and we'd love to know what you all think about the first impression you, and others, get from our website.

We're interested in improving our UI a bit, and making sure it attracts the right kind of visitor, one of the major things we want to add is the ability to toggle dark and light theme.

I first looked at the site on my phone and now on desktop and both times I thought it looked like one of those holding pages you see for expired domains - the ones where the registrar bungs up a load of adverts and marketing blurb.

The content feels very technical. What does 'AMD Epyc 7642 2.3ghz 48-core 96t 256mb 225w' even mean? What is a port scanning tool?

I'm assuming if you know about VPS each of your packages will make sense but for the uninitiated (like me) I wouldn't have a clue which one I need.

I looked at your blog posts but can't see what value they add. Why do I need to see a picture of your laptop? Why is your datacentre in the USA - I want my server to be in the UK.

The team consists of you. Where is your support team - the people I can call at 2am when something has gone wrong.

Where is the KB. How do I raise a ticket?

    Do I get a cPanel?

    Are they fully managed?

Do you do migrations? Does it come with the wordpress tookkit?

To whom are you marketing the service?

Why should I choose you over my existing host?

But what puts me off more that anything is the lack of phone number. I want to call you and discuss the best option for my business or tell you the VPS has crashed or whatever. I then discover you use a virtual address for your company. Which makes you anonymous - and that doesn't engender trust. A check on CH makes the whole set up look even more iffy.

Do you offer fully managed VPSs?

Great feedback from @fisicx especially the design comment, it really does feel like a holding page from an expired domain, If I land on this page I will immediately close the window without even bothering to read the hero.

You need to first identify your target market and write + design accordingly, for example I am assuming your audience have a high level of technical ability/understanding of servers because the language + terminology used in the website copy is very technical.

You also assume your audience understand the use cases/benefits of every single server or service you offer because you provide no explanations or comparisons between the servers/service tiers, at the very least mention the number of websites you can host with every server, inline with all your competition or elaborate on the terms like fair usage or unmetered.

Never ever use cheap to name a service, low cost, affordable, saver etc, never cheap as the word has negative connotations.

The status page is showing degraded services for the past 90 days, not very encouraging to new customers.

Why is the discord link in one place and the contact link in another, why not have the discord + email link next to each other?

As mentioned, the website does a very bad job at explaining the different services, capturing and retaining my attention and convincing me that you're someone I should trust with my hosting, good luck with the overhaul.

I love this. You've given me insight I never would've thought of, as admittedly, my mind is more toward the technical side of things.

The AMD part is the CPU we use - its one of the higher-grade CPUs, brilliant for CPU tasks.

Our higher level support team is based in the UK, however we do have support staff for more basic matters (billing etc) based in Chicago - Our engineers in Chicago work closely with us, so if at 2.30am in the morning BST, our entire server breaks down, or a massive attacks comes in, they'll be able to deal with it accordingly. So this does give us an extra bit of flexibility.

Our datacenter is based in Chicago, US, because we want to scale our operations quicker than most, which is also why we show pictures of our hardware, as this market is filled with a lot of providers that come and go, we wanted to show our potential clients that we've invested into enterprise-grade hardware, etc, to hopefully give the impression that we know what we're doing, as we do. - Back to why we chose the US, its a bigger market, and easier for us to reach a larger client base, so that when we do inevitably start operations here at home, we know that we won't have an issue keeping that location profitable, as depending on location, electricity and bandwidth prices differ.

People that aren't customers, can query via our [email protected] email, or via our discord, support tickets are reserved for clients - you cannot access our client area without ordering a VPS, or paying a £1 fee (this will get deposited into your balance automatically).

The team page is just our management, yes, just me, we do have Support Staff, Engineers, and other related positions.

Do I get a cPanel? We provide VPS servers only, you will get access to a panel that allows you to view CPU, MEM, DISK, NET usage in graphs, and reboot/start/stop your VPS.

*Our VPS servers are Linux Servers (Command Line Interface), accessed via SSH (secure shell).*

Are they fully managed? By default no, however after ordering you can enquire with us for management of that server, or, you can email us preferably with all your requirements so we can return a quote to you. (Router Servers - these servers are managed)

Do you do migrations? Does it come with the wordpress tookkit? We don't offer wordpress support what-so-ever, you'll need to hire a system administrator to install wordpress and migrate your site.

To whom are you marketing the service? At this moment, game hosting providers (minecraft servers etc), website owners (people that run their own codebase, not wordpress really), people running streaming sites such as PleX, etc. So far, most of our clients have come from word of mouth.

Why should I choose you over my existing host? That would vastly depend on who your host is. Most allocate you shared resources, meaning, your RAM, CPU, etc will be shared amongst a range of unrelated sites/servers they're also hosting, including and most certainly not limited to, your network speeds. With a VPS from HammerVM (Our VPS servers are actually VDS/Hybrid Servers, we call them VPS for SEO purposes), the resources we allocate you (KVM servers), are yours. We do also offer fairly useful technical support.

We're going to be setting up an inbound line after your advice, however as of now, we do actually provide callbacks to those customers that request it.

Its a bit broad, we target gamers, game hosting providers, torrentors, streamers, we've got a bit of everything with us, which is why we've tried to make our website design more professional, than oriented toward a specific niche etc.

A lot of what you've said makes sense to me. As for the status page, we're very transparent regarding our networks historical status.

We're going to be re-organizing our landing page to include more information, in a better, more readable format etc. We'll likely try and stay away from our core design, as although its a little bit plain, I do think with the right tweaks in the right places we can make it a long-term design.

I'd reflect the above comments. In brief, whilst I'm sure you are technically competent, you really need the services of a professional marketer your site really doesn't create any kind of warmth, clarity or empathy

As mentioned, opening with 'cheap' isn't a good idea.

And finally, unfortunately for you, your serviced office address has been used extensively for some very dubious business practice - id suggest you find a different one.

Yeah, we've taken the insight from you, and the other members of UKBF very seriously, and are redesigning our landing page to ensure users get detailed information about what we provide, and we're gonna try and keep the technical mumbojumbo to a minimum.

Could you give me a reference in relation to the business address? I've heard that a few times from people here now.

Before you do anything with the landing page you first need to consider your marketing plan.

How are you marketing to Gamers and your other target customers?

Your landing pages (there needs to be more than one) need to match the expectations of the potential customer. Technical specs are fine for those who understand the details but there may be many who need more details about what they get for their money and the services you offer.

The virtual address you have chosen has over 5000 registered companies. Looking at companies house I'd not want to be anywhere near some of those.

For credibility you really need a proper address - probably the one where your battle board is located.

And the Chicago thing isn't a good sales pitch. Especially if you are targeting UK customers.

My host offers fully managed VPS. They look after the migrations and it comes with a full stack of software and application. Costs more than your products but I'm happy to pay more for a better service.

You're right, however we aren't at all trying to tailor toward the WP market, I'll be honest, its the same reason we don't offer a lot of different more 'specialized services', as customers tend to want software-level support too.

The Chicago thing wasn't a pitch actually, it's our business plan, we've got expansions coming into Sweden and London as soon as we've got Chicago running itself (to a degree).

As for the address, I'm going to look into this.

I don't have a problem with your target customer (it's not me) but how are you going to make the streamers and gamers aware of your service?

What is your marketing plan? Are you planning an advertising campaign? SEO? Direct marketing? Reselling? Something else?

Your marketing plan will determine the structure and content of your website?

If I'm going to give you my money I need to trust you. Which means phone numbers, a proper office with staff and an address I can be sure isn't the home of some dodgy dealer.

This is actually one of the reasons we show pictures of our hardware, the dodgy ones are usually the ones that don't own their own hardware, etc.

Right now, a phone number would only serve us for UK Customers, so after some thought, I think would be best for us to release the number with our London Location.

How do I know that’s your hardware? It could be some stock images. Bin the whole blog thing - it adds no value.

As an aside, do you own the datacentre or just lease a couple of racks?

@ThatDevAaron - you don't need to justify or explain anything to anyone on here.

What you definitely need to do is take a big step back and get to grips with the basics of marketing (or employ someone who knows)

The absolute basics of marketing being:

    - Who (Exactly) is your target customer?

    - What need / desire are you meeting?

    - Why will they use you rather than others?

Your outgoing message needs to covey this simply, and in the language of that customer.

Similarly your set up needs to match the narrative. At the moment you're walking an uncomfortable and barely credible path between a bedroom operation & a multinational - whichever you choose to convey, it needs to fit with your customer and to stand up to scrutiny.

I actually have to disagree here, we've had a lot of positive feedback, and a few solid conversions from our blog. Not every article is of use, but most of our customers have stated its a nice feature.

Its not our DC, we have 1 rack.

Also, you can see we own it by the website being displayed (datacenters are strict on taking pictures inside the DC):

But the site isn't for existing customers. It's for new customers. As I said in my previous post, you need to match the site to your marketing plan. This may or may not require a blog.

It would be very easy to fake a picture of what I assume is a server with a screenshot of your website. But this is an irrelevance. The actual blog post adds little value. You probably need a page on the site with all the details of your hardware and software setup. You need to explain the SLA, disaster and contingency plans, redundancy, backups etc.

Your offer code " Save 35% using discount code FREEPALESTINE" is too political and if I was Jewish that would tell me you don't want my custom.
I don't want to really discuss this here what-so-ever as it can drastically change the thread's posts, we don't want that, and I'm sure the admins don't either.
*It's also not a religious statement, its a geographical statement.*

I wasn't wanting a discussion. I was just suggesting that a discount code should not be political. I would suggest it should be related to your business or just something else meaningful. Perhaps "VPS35" or "JAN25DISCOUNT"?

    Hello @ThatDevAaron

I am not able to contribute towards the critique of your website, but can offer you a little advice on dealing with the feedback you are getting.

There is no need to defend or justify anything on your site. {Post #6 and others) If a comment has been made that you disagree with, you can ignore it. But if you feel you have to defend or explain something in response to the feedback the inference is that you think its the right thing despite getting feedback that it is not.

I am suggesting to you that if it needs justifying then its not right because feedback is telling you it's not getting across the message you want to get across or worse, giving the wrong message.

    Good luck anyway

@ThatDevAaron - your expertise is clearly technical. It may be beneficial to employ someone to help with your marketing (which includes the website).

Going to have to. This thread will serve well to allow us to fall-back to it when we're ready to rework our web-flow.
    But….

Your webflow is a marketing function. It is an output of your marketing plan. Until you know to whom to market and how you can’t build an effective website.

A very generic hosting page -looks like a reseller possibly.

"We are a leading provider of virtual private servers (VPS) and cloud hosting solutions."

really - I thought that would be AWS,or Google Cloud, or Digital Ocean, or Hetzner or Vultr

For someone like me, who actually occasionally buys ( rents ) VPS and cloud services what on you site, if somehow I came across it, would make me even consider your service? ( Genuine question )

Well, that depends on a range of different things, our primary location is Chicago, so lets assume you have a need for this location, comparing us to other Chicago providers, we beat most simply by offering Fair Usage, unmetered bandwidth by default from as little as a £0.99/mo vps commitment, and offer favourable usage terms, alongside being one of a few providers that can actually assure customers they'll be able to access 'dedicated resources, with no over allocation'.

    Also, we're not a reseller: (https://hammervm.com/document?id=6)

Do you own the hardware or is this hardware provided by the data centre?

And has already been pointed out, that’s just images of stuff. There is no evidence that it’s your stuff. I could post a picture of a server on my site and tell you it’s mine. You would never know if that’s true or not.

    We own the hardware.

And as for the assumption at the end, it's laughable. We provide more than enough reasonable evidence to prove we aren't reselling, such as providing multiple pictures of our hardware.

That’s not what I said. How do we actually know it’s your hardware? I can’t see any labels or other indicators that they belong to you or are even in Chicago.
