Vlad the Invader - Why not just take him out?

I leave you all to work it out for yourselves - the sun is shining and I'm going outside to look at some urgent trees and perhaps play with my new Stihl 500i chainsaw.

You lot should be playing in the sun as well and not fretting over who is or is not brown/British/the enemy or any other nonsense you have F-all control over!

First time you've been stumped for an answer. . . . . . .

China believes the Russia/Ukraine issue should be resolved by the UN.

Yeah, as long as the Russians are doing their dirty work for them.

They'll ignore what's happening, as long as Russia will ignore the takeover of Taiwan.

Not sure which dictatorship is worse.

. . . . . .And the 3rd party of the Axis, Iran . . . . .have stated today, that they'll accept an immediate resolution to their nuclear deal, if the West are serious to negotiate.

What am I missing??

The difference between Russia and the brown people countries the Byre referred to is nothing to do with the colour of the skin, and more to do with Russia actually having weapons that can hurt the West, not made up weapons.

The West put troops in Iraq, Syria and bombed Libya. The US have troops in S Korea.

None of the above are NATO countries.

There was a bounty on Saddam Hussein, why not on Putin or other despot dictators?

What’s the real reason?

Different circumstances. South Korean bases are to offer power projection against North Korea/China and support Japan/Taiwan etc. North Korea cannot attack the south without bringing in the US and various other countries. It's an insurance policy.

Iraq, Syria, Libya are all a complete mess of different objectives. Oil, regime change, destabilisation, reducing Russian influence in that region. Non of these countries had nuclear capability, they had no way to project power, they cannot hit US cities or invade other countries that easily ,as they lack the firepower, tactical capability and weaponry required to do so. Easy for the US/Russia/various others to create a wargame arena to fight without impacting their own people. Russia/US happy to fight in someone elses playground but cannot fight on their own.

The whole premise of invading Iraq was based on them having nuclear/chemical warheads. That was the legal requirement for entering a sovereign state e.g. they could hit us with a warhead, therefore we are allowed to invade them. The only other legal way of striking them, is if they invade an ally but Iraq would only have been able to invade Kuwait, which they did in 1991 and failed. The US decided NOT to change leadership in 1991 though, they just gave them a nose bleed and left.

The US has done a 180 though. They've pulled out of Afghanistan, Iraq and most of Syria. Leaving behind a burning oil drum of various factions that are pulling countries to pieces and driving immigration issues in Europe. The US don't care about this, those fleeing conflict are not heading to the US border so it doesn't matter. It absorbs the region in fighting amongst themselves and leaves the US protected to a degree, whilst also allowing them to maintain funding for anti terrorism capabilities and weaponry. Peace means no guns and missiles get bought = very sad investors and billionaires

The problem with Russia is that it is unpredictable. They are bogged down in Ukraine at the moment, but they're using very light infantry units and frontline fodder. They haven't used the full array of weaponry available to them and, if this drags on, they may well decide to upgrade the tactical weapons they use. It would be interesting to see what China do in this instance. They've probably been told that the conflict will be done in 14 days, as a demonstration of Russias power but getting bogged town on street corners and crossroads looks embarrassing. Puting might decide to switch it up a gear and hit them with more devastating missiles.

And (it appears) arranging talks with Ukraine at the Belarus border.

Hopefully, sense will prevail and stop the takeover of Kyiv.

Of course, there is not one sensible, normal leader anywhere in the West. Canada has a painted monkey. The US has a shuffling, vague, mumbling OAP beholden to the banks. The UK has a man more suited to wearing a red nose and revolving trousers. Germany has just voted in a leader who resembles a post-office clerk who can't. And France has another painted monkey.

Ukraine has a comedian but he seems to be doing a good job.

It’s not really news. They regularly get an alert mainly to test the reaction around the world. Only difference this time is they have gone public. Putin might be a megalomaniac but even he knows pressing the nuclear button would result in MAD. Having lived through many years of the Cold War I’ve seen how rhetoric never resulted in action.

Well, Putin has already done what most people thought was unthinkable by launching an invasion of a European country.

Not sure about most people. I’ve been expecting it as soon as the Winter Olympics finished. Many others though the same. Only difference is I just thought he’d come in from the east.

All Russian owned aircraft banned from EU airspace

Did she say all Russian citizens are banned from flying in or out of the EU?

Around 00.29 she says "we are shutting down the EU airspace for Russians"

That might happen when the sanctions really start to bite as many of the "people at the top" are the oligarchs who will see their fortunes frozen and slipping away

Dunno about the oligarchs. Some of them who have opposed Putin haven't exactly fared well. I reckon it's still powerful ministers, politicians and generals who actually pull the strings. I wonder who the head of the FSB is these days.

Well, see the debate goes on! On one side are those arguing about F-all: on the other side are those arguing about B'er-all.

In the meantime, after cutting down several trees that got blown sideways and dragging them out of the woods behind my trusty IH 475, it is already beer o'clock and I am sipping one of my best home-brewed IPAs from a fresh 25-liter keg. My legs ache from all that jumping in and out of a tractor cab and my arms ache from wielding a large chainsaw.

It's all part of my tactical preparations for when Putin unleashes nuclear war and wipes out major cities. As my old tractor can also run on heating oil, when the end of civilization happens, we are ready with several cubic meters of fuel and we mostly heat the house with wood.

Come on! Smile! You knew it was all too good to last!

Well, you did, didn't you?

As with nearly all countries controlled by dictators the only people who can take control over are the Generals, the oligarchs have Putin's ear but little or no say as he controls them totally, The Generals on the other hand can plot behind his back and take control at any time and when Nukes are brought to the table and Putin placed in losing face to his population and the world they may be forced to act

Strange that all day the news channels reported on Putin putting his nuclear deterrent on high alert when the text translations didn’t interpret the word ‘nuclear’
Tonight the BBC text interpretations now include ‘nuclear’

Me thinks Putin knows he's been defeated and will look to save face at the talks later today.

Might be a good idea to give him a very very small 'win' (Ukraine not joining NATO before April), so he can take it back to his Generals.

Perhaps this episode shows that the West will not join in a war, if they feel that they may get hurt.

So much for just fighting 'brown people' and whatever that's supposed to mean.

Shame on the politicians.

You think Russian generals will be more compassionate and sympathetic than Putin, why?

How do you think they became generals?

Russia's likely demands for the talks to be held today:

1. Ukraine to recognise Crimea and Donbas region as Russian.

2. Removal of all western arms from Ukraine.

3. Agree to never join NATO.

Laughable if it wasn't so serious.

They became generals by calculating and analysing risks and planning whilst at the same time hiding their political views as far as possible, never knowing who their next boss may be.

They can recognise a failing situation and have the power to react, but also know that military can only keep power for a relatively short timeframe before returning power to the country

It's not unknown for the military to suggest a different plan of action only to be over lorded by the politician's who think they know best

I dont remember ever making the statement " compassionate and sympathetic than Putin" so dont put words I have not said into your argumentative statements

Anything connected to Putin is now toxic: that includes his country’s currency, its stock exchange, its banks, its major corporations, and its central bank. Even Russian vodka and caviar is being removed from retail shelves!

The central bank, Bank of Russia, first announced earlier today that the Moscow Stock Exchange would open at 10 a.m. Moscow time but there would be no stock trading, just trading in foreign exchange and repo markets. A further decision on opening up the stock exchange for stock trading was set for 1 p.m. Moscow time. It is still closed.

Unfortunately for Putin, investors are able to see where Russia’s major corporations are trading because many of them also trade on foreign exchanges. This is where some major Russian corporations were trading on the London Stock Exchange:
Sberbank - down 69%
Rosneft - down 39%
Novatek - down 67%

That follows plunges in their stock prices at the end of last week after Russia invaded Ukraine. The Russian central bank said it was temporarily banning Russian brokers from selling securities held by foreigners. After collapsing to an historic low against the U.S. Dollar last week, the Ruble fell by as much as another 30% today. In an effort to stem the plunge, the Russian central bank hiked its benchmark interest rate by more than double, from 9.5% to 20%.

The Russian central bank has failed to prop up its currency or to intervene effectively in other markets because its $640 billion in foreign currency and gold reserves are effectively frozen.

Over the weekend, long queues formed in Russia to take cash from banks’ ATMs. According to Reuters, there was a run today on the European arm of Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank. Reuters reported “Sberbank Europe and two other subsidiaries were set to fail, after ‘significant deposit outflows’ linked to ‘geopolitical tensions,’ according to the ECB.”

I very much doubt that Putin and his generals actually thought through all the scenarios that could or would follow their action.

Vlad is up against the wall, the fella is in trouble, it's all going belly up, no one wants to play with him anymore!

Even if he gets to occupy the playground, it'll be almost impossible to hang onto it.

This could make him a bit trigger-happy, worrying times ahead!

Did you see the look of worry on his generals faces in an earlier meeting today you wouldn't want to be in their shoes they must be looking over their collective shoulders and I predict that maybe this is when we will see a sudden removal of Putin by his own army and people before he starts taking them out.

Good overview from @The Byre as usual ?

There I would like to think be an obvious re-think to a lot of things now with over 71% plus of the UK energy and water companies in foreign hands not to mention steel manufacturing are our leaders really doing us any favours
