Ok, explanation time please ... I put in an offer yesterday which was not approved for any reason, so I pm Becky about it, who then approves it, it appears and now it has been deleted.

This reason has better be dammed good!!!!!!!

Yes fancy sticking to the rules and only offering here to this forum at that price and it being deleted, unlike the offer that was in there the other week that I reported, that was being offered around various forums all 'supposedly uniquely priced' to that particular forum - that offer is still in place in that section despite the Mods being given links to where it was on offer elsewhere ...

So this explanation had better be dammed good!!!!!!!

Oh apparently I have now been informed by the Mod who deleted it that I didnt put the word discount in it, although I did state if was for UKBF Only ... mmm offers deleted for lack of a word ...

I give in too!!

My offer was a genuine one made only here on this forum at that low price for the members and yes I do now feel somewhat let down that my motives are being questioned due to me not stating the word discount in my offer ...

The organisation off this sift company is somewhat alarming.

Did they copy nu lab rule book off one must create a thousand rules to do something easy in order to make it complicated?

An offer is an offer, I understand if you only posted a couple off times but nearly 10000 and they need to check it for the missing word discount. A couple of mods maybe feel threatened Gillie by your mighty words off wisdom and common sense?

- Runs to bunker with sandbag protection and mans gatling gun ready for incoming fire!!!

Cheers

Hi guys

Thought I'd better hop on and explain a few things considering there seems to be some upset, and I don't like to think we have any unhappy campers...

Gillie - I have explained to you what happened via PM when you contacted me; did I give you a sufficient and satisfactory response? Mistakes happen - and it was my mistake which I apologised for, I should actually have requested that you reword your original offer but I was cutting you some slack. I should have stuck firmly to the rules and this is indeed a lesson for me.

Sift own and run UKBF with the tremendous efforts and support from our team of voluntary moderators who have guidelines laid down for them to assist them in operating as mods and trying to keep this place as ship-shape as possible. We try and operate as a team, with no real need for hierarchy unless absolutely necessary - I for one want this to be a friendly, healthy place for debate, support and the occasional giggle. We are all only human, and by the very nature of some of things we have to deal with here and the multitude of different personalities sometimes we make mistakes, and sometimes we misinterpret situations and comments - it happens, and I like to think we all, mods and members, work hard to find resolutions.

Gillie - I am sorry for your trouble and any confusion but my personal apology to you was sincere. I stand by the mod's decision to ask you to resubmit as I should have in the very beginning.

I am always here if anyone wants to ask or say anything about these Forums, but I do ask that as our members you cut us some slack sometimes - this is a phenomenally busy place, and yes, we do have rules, but I reiterate, we are only human after all.

My turn to run for cover??!! :)

I re-submitted it several hours ago Becky with the additional wording of it being a discounted price, so I am now assuming that this will be displayed in the offers section pdq?

Hi Gillie

Just offering another pair of eyes on this matter for what that's worth?

The Rules on posting Offers up are as follows (copied in part);

"UKBF Offers

This forum is to promote any offers that are unique to UKBF members. All members can post an offer in this forum, but all offers are checked before being put live. Most importantly, the checks will include whether or not your offer is available elsewhere (for example, through your own website or on eBay). The majority of offers posted in this section are put live within one working day – however, please allow two working days for your offer to be put live."

I've removed two offers tonight made by members simply because I could not quantify that the purported offer actually existed. To put things in perspective, we do get loads of bogus offers and it takes a bit of time to try to verify each one to make sure it complies with the rules.

Very often, the same offer can be found across a range of other forums simply by going to Google and typing in the first couple of lines of the post. Where it isn't plastered all over Google then we go to that members website to see how much they are charging for the same product/service and if the normal offering shows clearly that the offer is unique to UKBF members we will approve the post accordingly.

Problems usually arise when we can't find any prices on the members web site which relate to the offer being made on UKBF (you qualify on this point) and this (I think understandably) makes us wonder if it's actually a genuine offer. I'm not saying your's isn't, I'm just setting out the circumstances here.

We then take a hard look at the wording of the offer to see if there's anything that gives us a clue about it's authenticity and after reading 'both' offers you made I'd have to say I'd reject both of them, sorry. Here's why (if you want a copy of these sending by PM please let me know).

This is the last line in your second offer...

"To apply for this service, either pm me or email as per below stating UKBF in your subject line to qualify for this discounted price."

Now, there's absolutely no mention of what your offer is worth, you do mention your normal fixed price but nowhere in either offer do you mention what discount a member might receive if they contacted you. In simple terms, I can't see your offer because you aren't making it clear what your offer is.

I'm replying here to try to offer my 2c, whether it provides any clarity, I've no idea.

Regards

Ray

The offer I wrote, stated we are offering a low fixed price of x amount for this and x amount for that and that the offer ran until November and why we were offering it.

Perhaps I was being too clever then and should have merely stated the following Ray??

Offer: Discounted price for tax returns lasts till end of November?

I thought I would explain you see why you should consider it.

No, we don't have prices on the website for this as most people don't who offer a service. As usually the price is dependent on many things, but as this was an offer, we committed ourselves to such.

I mean if I headed to your site Ray, would I find a price list, or perhaps Alans site, would I find a price list for his accountancy services, that gave definitive prices that I could lay down in stone?

So, does that therefore mean, that anyone who doesn't put their prices on their site, or even worse, have a site is then not allowed to post an offer??

Come on guys, there are loads of offers already up and running that break just about every rule you state at me, so what is this ... lets make an example of Gill time??

If I was so bloody minded, I would head right now to the offers section and carry on reporting them as they don't fall within your criteria as explained above.

Sorry Gillie but the fact of the matter is that your offer is not quantifiable as it stands and your post was too generic for us to be sure that it was specific to UKBF. It has to be one rule for all, whether a long standing member or not.

I already said that I have removed two posts tonight from other members on the basis that I could not quantify whether they were specific. By all means if you find any offers in the offer section that you do not think are specific please report them. As Becky pointed out we are only human and we do make mistakes. The offers forum is extremely time consuming to moderate so it is entirely possible we have missed some.

No one is making an example of you, I would point out that it was yourself that has decided to air your issues in public. I was simply trying to put another perspective on things.

Hi Gillie

From what I can see, another moderator made a decision not to approve your offer. Becky's post above clearly states that she should have asked you to reword your offer and I, as another pair of eyes have looked at your offer and said I'd have rejected it too. Becky's gone to some trouble to reply above, as I have too in the hope of being responsive but you've been asked to reword it and it's been explained to you by Becky and myself above, why your offer hit a wall.

It's not "let's make an example of Gill time", you made the matter public and we've tried to explain why things have taken this course.

I mean if I headed to your site Ray, would I find a price list?

By the way, Yes, I do have prices on my website. That way, when I make an offer on UKBF stating a discount I'll tell them the discounted price which they can verify by going to my site.

Is this a good time to suggest a wider selection of smileys?

So I don't have standard prices on my website either as it's not particularly a bright thing to do for competitive industries in my opinion.

but... If I updated just one page on my website to say what the usual price would be for one particular product or service would that be ok then for verification/comparison purposes?

and, could I go ahead and post an offer to say 10% discount or whatever for ukbf members only?

For anyone that really doesn't want to put their prices on their website is there another way to validate such as providing a few copy invoices to the Mod?

It would appear that sense has now prevailed - unless of course a Mod deletes it yet again once posted - that my offer has been accepted and is now live!

I would like to say thank you to Becky for putting up with me and understanding my frustrations in all this.

As a suggestion to avoid this happening again ... Sift and the Mods surely now need to put up an example offer as a sticky stating the criteria that needs filling, remembering of course that not all those making offers are the same, ie as stated, those of us in the service industry tend as a large percent to NOT put prices on their sites etc so this particular criteria that was quoted at me needs looking at perhaps??

I understand totally what Gillie means. These are some examples of the dross that is in the offers section:

http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=127502

http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=127196

http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=127906

http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=127897

None of these offer any real prices and some arn't even real offers.

Can I also suggest that offers are not left open. There should be a cutoff date after which the thread is closed and deleted.

I can see the mods logic (it's not rocket science really ;))

Quite simply

Off in the big wide world off the Internet you won't often get a direct mail out saying 10% off loft conversions (for example) as without knowing that quoted price before hand the customer has no verifiable way (neither does anyone else) of knowing if the offer is genuine or if the quote was artificially inflated to make that offer seem like it actually exists.

They are more likely to offer a discount on 'dormer windows' for which prices are generally known and exist on a price list somewhere.

I myself wouldn't offer a discount on service that requires a 'quote' as it'd be utterly useless to the client for the above stated reasons, neither would I be compelled to buy from someone who had such an offer.

It is such common business practice to artificially inflate quotes for a variety of reasons that the whole 'quote' area is grey enough as it is.

However, the matter re Gillie's offer is now sorted and the extra publicity about the offer re this thread shouldn't harm it any.

In light of what has happened over the last two days, I thought you would like to know that we are reviewing this area of the site.

Please give me until next week to thrash this out with the other moderators; I will come back to you with new rules for Offers next week.

Please, please let me know that you are all happy and smiling now ;)

:DOh no XXX was banned.:D

Er extra bump

Thank the lord. Whoever banned him deserves a medal.

I bet I'm going to get more abusive E-mails now sent through my website from Coolio :p. Got another one today, angry little fella.

Oh and his enquiry line was "can you guess which new user am I?" so, by the way mods, I think he has a new UKBF account somewhere.

On the subject of discounts then.... if I wanted to give a discount that applied to UKBF only, can I do it as a discount code which will deduct a set percentage? It would be unique to UKBF and would run for a set period of time and it could be verified by someone if they created a dummy order and put the code in the discount box. Or is that not allowed??

Getting more abusive messages from Coolio now. Apparently calling himself the silent assassin and saying that he's 'waiting for the moment to attack'. Smashing. Also, if I keep saying what he's writing, he's going to take 'the next step'.

Since you're watching this Coolio, I thought this would be the best way to tell you that I've reported your IP and your unique ID to Sky broadband as abuse and they've contacted me on the phone about it today. Actually very surprised they've got back to me so quickly about taking action.

I'm reporting every E-mail you send to me as they have recommended, so keep it up if you like.

Also, mods, Coolio has another account on here now.

PS:

You may not use Sky Broadband and/or the Sky Network to send, receive, store, distribute, transmit, post, upload or download any materials or data which:

• violates any Law;

• is defamatory, offensive, abusive, indecent, obscene, or constitutes harassment;

• is or may be harmful to minors;

• promotes or encourages illegal or socially unacceptable or irresponsible behaviour;
