I feel I am missing out, but SWMBO has had to do a course :)
Google's SWMBO....
Ah yes, mine has been in and out of naughty school and is flirting around with score card points. Scares the S* out of me when she's driving and I ain't joking.

as my questions is ONLY related to stretches of road where there are no signs

No was more wondering if there were road markings apart from signs which indicate speed limits

For example the central paint lines

No legally enforceable road markings - but some areas e.g. schools have 20 painted on the road and country roads into villages have rumble strips and 30 painted on the road - but the signs on the side are the important things that alter the national speed limits.

As others have mentioned national speed limits apply where no signs alter them.

The national speed limits apply differently to different vehicles.

So if I enter a road where there are no speed signs and everyone is doing 40mph and I do 40mph too I'm not ignorant?

So if the road has lamp posts there will be a repeater limit sign of 40 every 200 yards or 8th lamp post - if none - it is 30.

If you turn into a road where all the traffic is doing 40 then in my experience it is likely to be a 30 as it seems to me that most people like to speed.

It also seems to me that that are a proportion of people think if they get really close it will make the car in front go faster, which actually often has the opposite effect.

Try driving slowly in the West Midlands and see where it gets you!

As for your attempt at humour, it wasn't funny, as my questions is ONLY related to stretches of road where there are no signs

Tried finding the Highway Code guidance on this, very difficult to find, I wonder why

?
For goodness sake man! Lighten up and get real, please!

Are there loads of ‘speed traps’ as you call them placed on roads that have no signs? Like remote rural lanes & stuff? No?

I don’t know what they do where you live, but I’ve only ever seen them on roads through villages, at places where the limit goes from 60 to 30, on dual carriageways and on motorways!

Just slow down if you feel uneasy or unsure, or both.

I think these comments show how unclear the rules are. Page three after just 4 hours !
Disagree. The rules are very clear. The problem is people don’t know them or choose to ignore them.

So far street lighting, single carriageway and dual carriageway are the main indicators shared by thread responders of road speed where there are no speed signs

All the other comments are irrelevant to the primary question

If you don't believe speed traps exist all over the country then do a Google search

@fisicx is right that many people don't know the rules or get confused by them

The British Government takes advantage of this by filling its coffers with YOUR and MY hard earned Sterling

It's about time speed traps were made illegal

The speed limit signs are only a suggestion
If you want to put the hammer down then do that
You all have virtual business addresses register your car there under the name of Basil Brush or somebody ??
Then they wont catch you if post a 200MPH video on YouTube or Instabook :)

But now you know the rules you won’t get caught again. Those that speed pay the fines. Not a problem for you anymore.

There would be a lot less accidents if they used hidden camera's, If you speed you pay the fine and eventually lose your licence

Between two villages in Norfolk they have about 5 miles of overhead camera's every few hundred metres where your speed is measured and also the average time taken between camera's, works well at keeping everyone at 50MPH and not speeding between camera's

One thing that pisses me off if that some people who get done basically never lose their licence as they do Charity or some other work and need there licence , to me 12 points and that's it no excuses or fancy reasons full stop

Being a cub scout and paying expensive solicitors, I've been hanging onto my licence for a long time!

Anyway we'll all be driving government internet-controlled electronic vehicles soon and you simply won't be able to speed

I wonder how they'll fill that extra revenue hole?

And I wonder what the cost of adminstering accidents is versus the revenue Westminster and their local pals receive from speed traps?

The cost is not just administering accidents, it also includes medical treatment, state benefits due to unemployment or bereavement etc.

It is so very, very easy not to get caught by a speed trap. Don't speed.

So I looked at a road that is now covered with average speed cameras on nearly all sections that have not been dualed - the A9 between Perth and Inverness. I compared (with average speed cameras almost everywhere) with years before they were introduced sometime around 2014 (occasional speed cameras, but easily spotted).

2019 - two deaths.
2020 - two deaths.

1999 - eight deaths.
2007 - ten deaths.
2008 - seven deaths.

Unfortunately, that won’t mean much to those who rush around on their ‘important missions’.

I wonder how a serial speeder would feel if it was one of their kids who was wiped out by someone going too fast?

Well, as some of you may have noticed, I'm a bit of a numbers guy - so when my wife got done for speeding on a five-mile country lane that goes through a village and made the same excuse "How was I to know? I didn't realise that the 30mph limit still applied on that bit!" I looked at the numbers.

In the previous ten years, that little stretch of country road 17 accidents were reported to the police because someone got injured. Of those, two were classed as serious and another five resulted in a total of seven deaths.

There are always idiotic drivers no matter what the weather conditions. No doubt this is one of those that race past in thick fog or ice endangering the lives of everyone else and not just themselves
Natural selection should eventually do its thing but the trouble is, they impose their stupidity onto others.

Ok let's dance

It's called a speed trap because it takes advantage of uncertainty about the speed

Another way to make money from hard working people

Saying "don't speed" is off topic

It’s not a speed trap. They are safety cameras. If you know your Highway Code there is no uncertainty. It’s one of the requirement of you holding a driving license.

If you abide by the law you don’t get fined.

Nothing to do with making money, just a simple way of trying to stop motorist's who have never learnt to grow up and potentially will kill innocent people with their stupidity

You're both wrong

A speed trap is when the Old Bill know there's ambiguity about the speed and so take advantage by catching out unsuspecting motorists

If you think all speed trap victims are criminals intent on breaking the law then you live in a different reality or are missing the whole point of the OP question

It's a legal scam which should be illegal not the driver

Anyway my question has been sufficiently answered so you lot can crack on and stir the pot, I'm off to do more important things like clip my toenails

@SEO Developer - can you post a link to the street view where you got caught so we can see the ambiguity you claim.

You're doing it again @fiscx

You know what you're doing

You always do it, focus on the questioner not the question

I was clearly asking a general question about the entire country - one you actually helped to answer already

Now it's Saturday afternoon and not being a football or rugby fan you're clearly bored

Anyway back to my toenail clipping, it's rather more important than this

Not at all. You keep making claims that speed limits are ambiguous. Just asking to see the ambiguity. If you are correct I will rescind my claim that there is no ambiguity. It’s not directed at you,,just the placement and legality of the camera.

Not bored, just being driven home after teaching Tai Chi

Ok @fisicx, you take precendence over my toenails

There are no speed traps anywhere in the UK

All speeders are evil crooks who don't know or care about the rules

The Police would never make speeds ambiguous anywhere in order to add to the coffers of Her Majesty's Government

Happy now?

OK, I'll take the bait -

If there is genuine ambiguity (and not, as in my wife's case, one of those typical "Oh! I didn't realise that the 30mph zone still applied as this is just an ordinary country road!") I would consider it my civic duty to appeal the fine and prove to a court that ambiguity existed.

In fact, in the distant past, I did just that - I drove out of the back-alley onto a High Street, unaware that I was going the wrong way down a one-way street. I was able to prove (photo) to the magistrate that there were no signs to tell me which way to go on exiting the alley.

There was more than ambiguity and it was the policeman who observed me exiting the side road that suggested that I make that case, as he and his colleagues wanted the council to put signs up.

So if you were done for speeding and you genuinely at no time passed a speed restriction sign or had any other indication of such a restriction, you are (IMO) duty-bound to prove that to the court.

There has been talk about having speed restrictions in our village for years

A new Parish Meeting chairman and the issue is on the agenda again

The thing is, our village isn't really long enough, speed restriction area is supposed to be 600m ideally (they do allow 400m in exceptional circumstances)

There are also 3 possible 4 side roads that would have to have signs which would lead to requiring at least 12 - 14 signs

This is a village where there are tutterings if a bin is left out on the wrong day, some people say just one sign would ruin the village

If the correct amount of signs aren't provided if a sign is incorrect the limit isn't enforceable

There is no ambiguity on what speed you should be doing - if you don't know what speed you should be doing then it's time to hand in your licence or get some practice with a driving instructor.

This is true. Last week I was driving up the M606 and got caught in queues. A driver (unsurprisingly a BMW driver) was driving too fast on a very wet surface and had spun out crashing into the barrier.
