Ever been caught in a speed trap?

I've had enough of pulling out onto a road and not knowing how fast you can go, only for a letter to arrive demanding I part with my hard earned Sterling

How can you tell the exact speed limit of any road in Britain if there are no speed limit signs?

Fairly simple really:

Speed limits

A limit of 30 miles per hour or 48 kilometres per hour usually applies to all traffic on all roads with street lighting

Normally there is a sign unless the road you came from also had the same speed limit or if it is an obvious built-up area with houses and street lights.

It’s all covered in the Highway Code. Assume 30 if there are no signs opposite the entrance or as you join the carriageway.

There are 3 speed limits that apply.

30 MPH - Built up area / regular street lighting

60 MPH - Non built up / no regular street lighting

70 MPH - Dual carriage way/ motorway.

All others are signed at set intervals (and signs override the above)

As the saying goes, ignorance is no excuse. It's basc driving test stuff - you haven't been robbed, you've been penalised for ignorance.

They don't apply to builders. Nothing for you to worry about.

A local builder got nabbed a couple of years back. He got caught speeding in three different places. Turns out he had 4 vans with the same numberplate.

Slow down a bit and you’ll notice that those blurry red & white things with blurry black hieroglyphics in them are actually speed limit signs!

And remember, it’s a limit not a target ?

It's impossible on normal A road on my VW satnav (trust me).

Can't remember the last time I got done for speeding, tend to chill along at a leisurely pace now I'm older. Even my wife moans I drive "like an old man", but life's too short for racing around in a car now ?.

Anyway, if you see street lighting anywhere and/or you see no speed signs assume it's 30mph limit as it usually will be. Otherwise there will be regular repeating road signs telling you the speed of the road.

"Local councils can set their own speed limits in certain areas, and these must be clearly signed."

To be fair the law is pretty clear, so if there were no speed signs as you state and there was no means of street lighting as per the highway code, then it is a national speed limit (or you can argue it in caught and may win if the above is proven)

Try driving slowly in the West Midlands and see where it gets you!

30mph signs are 250 metres between signs. 40mph are 350 metres and 50pm are 450 metres, so obviously between those gaps there are no signs.
In areas where there are housing and/or street signs there is no requirement for there to be any repeated 30 mph signs. The street light poles are indicative and a replacement for the speed limit signs, so in those areas you won't see signs and are expected to know the limit.

However, as I said, if there was no housing nor street lighting and there was no signs challenge it in court and you will likely win.

Not if there are other symbolic signs to represent a 30, such as street lighting or a path and houses, but if there are none such as a country lane then there is a requirement to have repeater signs.

They are local limits. Did you look at this:

30, 60 and 70. Those are the national limits. If you can't see a sign apply these.

Lots of villages now have 20 MPH limits especially near schools and residential area's, But if you don't know what speed you should have as a limit just use your brain and drive sensibly, Maybe you need to take a advanced driving test or in your case a simples one

Nope. Signs on sticks, gantry signs and occasionally painted numbers on the road.
