The above is what I get when I try and log on to Windows (win 7)

I have managed to boot into safe mode and created a new user which I am using now but this user won't allow me to access any of my files or emails created under my "proper" login

I have Googled the problem and have tried a few of the fixes that I can understand, none of which have worked and I'm hoping that one of the clever techies here will wave his magic wand and come up with a workable solution as life as a broker who is unable to access his contacts or emails is understandably difficult

Was your stand alone PC ever on a corporate network, or has it been standalone from the get-go?

The screen where you change your PC name and Network ID, Does it say "Workgroup"?

System Settings > Computer name > "Workgroup:"
In that section, does it say "Workgroup" or does it say the previous companies domain name?

This can affect the REG keys you do or don't have to edit..

It's always been standalone and has always booted straight into Windows but this morning it came up with a screen with my name on and when I click on the icon it says "The group policy client service failed the logon. Access is denied" and when I click on that icon it takes me back to the icon with my name on it.

I have managed to transfer my documents from the faulty user name to my new one but I still can't access Outlook which is where I have all of my contacts and emails

Ian, should be in a .pst file in the user profile.

Many thanks. You are a life saver. I found out online how to copy my user data from my old login to the new one and managed to find the pst file so I can now access my emails.

I thought that I was being wise in backing up all my documents to a Synology Raid thingie but didn't realise that a user profile could corrupt itself so that I couldn't access the files.

We're off on holiday shortly and all of the details from car park to flight bookings were in mail folders in Outlook so being unable to access it was a real pain from a personal point of view as well a business one.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Ian

It would be great if you could also answer WESH.UK's question:

System Settings > Computer name > "Workgroup:"
In that section, does it say "Workgroup" or does it say the previous companies domain name?

Just for completeness of information on this thread..
