Hi There

Would I be asking too much from stock / inventory control software if I wanted to specify an inner quantity for each carton?

Many stock/ inventory control software packages allow for such things. In most you start with a 'Base Unit of Measure', which is then multiplied by the quantity to produce the 'carton'. However it all depends how sophisticated your software is and what functionality it contains.

Well, you would think so wouldn't you. But the wasp software which is not cheap doesn't include this functionality. Of course they have tried to get around it by telling me to create "Kits" but far from addresses the problem.

It just amazes me that something so basic and simple in stock taking can be left out of such a large companies software. I mean, I can't be the first person who has required this feature.

How do you guys count your stock? Do you individually add each item in a full carton?

What software do you use?

We may be able to help - our software has a number of different ways of handling this - it allows you to buy/sell in specific quantities, you can 'kit' the items, or you can 'manufacture' the items.

The software will also generate any number of 'quantity' barcodes - eg barcode 1 = 1 item, barcode 2 = 12 items, barcode 3 = 100 items etc.

Please get in touch if you want to see how it works.

What other software have you looked at?

They all offer different functionality - what you need to partly work out and document is what you see as musts and which are likes
Looking at different software will help you see how different approaches have been taken

If you are not doing buckets of stuff it may just be more work handling inners with no upside

Are you using it in a retail environment - do you need POS as part of it - etc etc

So what other software ?

Hi Page,

I've looked at a couple but the wesbites didn't give me much hope in the product. I want something that supports multiple locations, and items per carton, which I would have thought was a pretty basic requirement. 1 box = 18 items, you scan 10 boxes and you have 180 items, not really rocket science.

We don't use an epos system, it would be purely for stock control.

Have a look at estockcard - it does what you are asking about in this thread - great but complicated to get going because it does so much but it will give you an idea - But weak with barcodes

Understand wasp first - 2 hours would do it

If you want to see good with barcodes then invoice2go - but that has other things not nearly as good as estock card and does not do what you are asking (which I suspect would be nice but not a must have if you were to draw up a spec and might just be a time waster)

And on it goes

Both do more than they say on the tin and than might be apparent at first

Pricing is very different as in functionality

Let me know if you find anything good or interesting because this is my background project at the moment

Thanks page.

I need something with a handheld unit? It appears that none of these do. Any ideas?

Wasp which you have rejected

You may well need to write a spec with a MOSCOW type approach - go google it

The perfect program may not exist

And think whether you REALLY need hand held as opposed to laptop on a trolly with wireless scanner

Handheld ups price a lot

Handheld reduces software choice - a big lot

You have to synch the hand held data back and forth to a desktop program anyway

Input screens are more restricted

xtuple will do it - plus everything else in the whole wide world (lol) - and so that can be a big problem

Free version is called postbooks and you can get it from source forge

Barmy that it does so much and for nowt - its ERP - great forum etc

Hi Mark,

Unfortunatley i havent done my 15 posts yet so i cant post a url, but the orderwise software will do what you require. it basically allows you to book in the outer, and will put the inners in stock, it is very flexible when it comes to packaging and pack sizes etc.
Cheers Paul

I hate websites that don't advertiset their prices. I leave as quick as I arrived because to me, no price means they're to embarrased to publish it as it's a rip off.

No prices are shown as each company we deal with is different and requires a different amount of training(sometimes at our premises sometimes at the clients) and/or migration from the system they may be using, also there a multitude of add ons such as web integration, courier integration, number of users to be taken into account. We are not an off the shelf piece of software we are a stock control solution.
Good luck in finding what you are after. I would perhaps look in the shopping results of Google if you are after an of the shelf piece of software, If searching on inventory you will tend to come across more american companies than British, worth bearing in mind if you require telephone support.

Orderwise is in the thousands from ancient memory

Not necessarily a rip off and might be good value for the right company but like you I do not waste my time on them. To many others to go and look at without spending hours getting over the first hurdle of is it in our price range. Ah well look at it first etc and then ...

I assume they think it is a good way to work and maybe it is for them - bt maybe it is not.

They could always give an indicator of typical costs for different implementations so save evryone time.

My policy if they do not do this then STEER WELL CLEAR - they will not be worth it and if they pull you in with more and more costs.

Hi Mark
Fully understand your connundrum.
I have a software development company that specialises in retail. I think our latest product 'Imperium Retail Solutions' will suit the bill.

As you have no need for Epos - we have a built in 'Back Office Data Entry' function that allows for sales, stock receipts etc. The system is fully web browser based - so no downloads needed and works in real time.

Can provide a hand held device for stocktaking as well (scan once * quantity in box).

Multiple locations available as well as more than you would probably expect from a retail package. Indeed, if we do not have any functionality you require built in we will develop it as part of our general offering.

Visit www.coland.co.uk and take a look at Imperium or have a go with the trial.

Regards

Hi, I have sold stock control software and accounting software for the last 5 years and it is amazing how many systems do not cope with this.

With regards to handheld devices, you will be restricted by software choice, data will probably not be live if you have multiple users in a warehouse, and they are liable to be dropped.

This will also depend upon how detailed you want the software to be. If someone purchases 180 do you want the system to direct you to an unsplit pack or just take the first 180? If you are working with foodstuffs with expiry dates you might want it to direct you to stock that is due to expire the soonest.

Many systems allow you to have a base Sale Unit Quantity and then add variables on how the product can be sold. Few allow you to then assign different barcodes to each of the different pack sizes.

I do know of some that do this but they have not got very good barcode scanners.

This might be as simple as doing a Google search and asking the question and asking about budget. I have seen fairly good systems being sold for £99! Others can cost you £10k plus.
