Basically my idea stems from a system called Trakus that is available in America. The system measure the distance the racehorse covers in the race.

The plan is two fold, to sell that data to bettors who can use the data to grade the horse's performance in a race, so they can use it as a guide in the future.
The other revenue stream would be from racehorse trainers, who could use the data, to help what a racehorse best distance is, and if it goes better left or right handed.

I see huge potential in both the UK, Ireland and French markets.

I've been considering a tech business in this sector as I've got knowledge of horse racing. I believe that the UK horse racing industry is working on sectional timings similar to the US to help punters with pace figures so maybe Trakus is getting involved here?

The difference between the US and UK is the variability of the UK courses. Horses can race on different parts of the course for ground preference so distance travelled needs to be combined with times, ground conditions, and undulations too, to give a fair comparison across tracks. In terms of ground conditions, I've been looking into something more automated than a manual going stick reading. Maybe a Boston Dynamics robot to walk the course and take the readings continuously, combining weather data to forecast likely going changes.

Tech seems to be hitting every sport now with consumers thirsty for data to gain an edge. They'll be many opportunities and many revenue streams from both business and consumer. You've got bookies who may want to use data for in-running purposes, punters who want to gain an edge, trainers to access data to optimise horses etc

I'm looking to start a business so give me a shout if you want to team up on anything in this sector.

I don't trust any horse not wearing a boater and know nothing whatsoever about racing, but it's fascinating how data is being applied to all sorts of sports.

My question would be if this type of data acts as a complement to human judgement or a substitute for it ? A bit like the football manager who says "I can't understand why we lost. We didn't score any goals but we spent 54.7% of the time in their half and had possession 59.34% of the time. It's a mystery!"

Years ago i dealt with a company called "Real Time Tracking" who did it for dog racing, back over a decade go i helped them find a guy with video codec experience (and some patents) as they tracked from vid.

I think they failed as they had a great solution for something people wouldnt pay enough for to support them
