Small Business Mailing Lists

We've got some great copy to promote our accounting software to small businesses.

The problem now is finding more lists to promote it to.

We've already used www.j4bgrants.co.uk (brilliant response!) and www.emedia.co.uk (a good response)
and we'll soon be going out to the bStartup Community list

Does anyone know of any other firms with large mailing lists of small business owners?

Alternatively, if any of you have medium sized lists, feel free to join our affiliate scheme and we can provide you with the content for an email. You'll then make a healthy commision on any sales.

I'm always recommending marketscan.co.uk. We recently bought a list of 300 names and specified:

The businesses must have only one employee (i.e. the owner), listed as trading from home, in the BN1-BN4 and BN7 areas and (as we wanted to do follow up calls) must have a contact name and telephone number.

All of this was selected on their website so didn't have to ring them up.

I've never been too impressed when we've bought data in the past. I've found companies own mailing lists are much more relevant and get a better response.

I'm not averse to trying it again though.

Ashley - did you get a good result from that data? Were email addresses included?

I also recommend Marketscan. I have been using them, and Never had a complaint yet.

Just out of interest, how much do J4B charge for those direct emails and have you found it worthwhile? I get them sent to me all the time and wondered if people saw a decent return on their investment.

Well, we're still working on the list so I'll let you know. We've had one definite already, however. But of the 200 that were followed up with a phone call over 60% were on answering machine, voicemail or even the phone switched off! So they will be followed up again.

(That 60% could be getting another mail-out promoting our telephone answering service.)

Email addresses weren't included because we didn't ask for them.

I can't remember what the cost was, but I can put you in touch with them if you'd like.

I found it very worthwhile. The emails do get read, so if you have good copy then you'll pull in the numbers.

Exactly! After all they could be losing up to 80% of potential business (I'm often on about the survey we did) by leaving their calls to an answering machine.

You can get 'a' mailing list cheap, or you can get a good mailing list. Depends on the resluts you want. If you want cheap mailing list, go on ebay. If you want a good mailing list give me a call.
