Should I wait for the new iPhone?

Hello All,

I have the iPhone 4 not the 4S. I was waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out, and it came out and I was not impressed. I went to a phone shop the other day, and I was blown away by the HTC One, and Samsung S4. They make the iPhone 5 look old in my opinion. However, my problem is that I don't want to get an Android when I realised all of a sudden that I have all things Apple. I have iMac, MacBook Air, iPad, and an iPhone 4. I did not plan this on purpose. I am not a big Apple fan by any standard. I also use Windows PC's at home and at work.

Now the main point of this post is that I heard that they are likely to bring out an iPhone 5S or 6. I know these are just rumours. However, if there is a big likelihood, then I would rather wait and get the 5S or 6 instead of the 5, even if it's not that different from the 5. I know it's time I changed the 4. I just don't want to get the 5 and the 5S to come out couple of month later. I am asking those who may know more than me about this kind of gossip what the likelihood of a 5S or 6 is coming out this September?

Why do you feel the need to upgrade? Is what you not sufficient in any way?

I have both Iphone and just bought samsung note2 to see the difference. Many phones have their own selling point but iphone is by far the most user friendly (if you take away the cost).

Having all models of iphone as well, if you have no need then I suggest you wait for the new model.

My phones are not broken and then do everything required of them. Hence they do not need replacing.

I basically want the AirPlay feature of iPhone 4S and 5. That's the mean reason for me wanting to get the next iPhone. Plus like everyone else, I want a faster shinier phone. Apart from that my iPhone 4 is perfectly fine. I got it on launch day, so I think I've had it for about 3 years now, if my calculations are right.

Not true at all. We've got two mobile phones, one cost £9 the other about £12, both from Tesco. Neither are shiny but both make phone calls perfectly well.

Like you Ive had my '4 for about 2.5 years, was suitably underwhelmed by the 5 and I occasionally look but don't see anything as a 'must have'. I saw the gadget show review of the HTC one and it does look impressive but in reality its just a bigger screen with front mounted speakers.

iOS7 will run on the '4 so you could stick with it. People are saying that Apple aren't innovating with their gear, I agree but I think you can apply that uniformly to *all* handsets. Its just bigger screens, better cameras, longer battery, thats evolution not innovation.

I was looking at a Lumia 920 as I fancied a real change but a friend bought one after a couple of months and said don't bother.

Doesn't really matter how long you wait, because within 3 months of buying it there will be a 'new improved version'.

I wouldn't have any apple phone personally, in fact I don't even have a smart phone. My old Nokia X2-02 (Dual Sim) serves me perfectly well, saves me carrying 2 phones (I have personal account with vodafone and business one with orange) and I have no intention of changing it unless I need to. I have heard that Samsung are introducing a dual sim smartphone to the UK market, so that may be under consideration if/when it appears, but I'm in no rush.

I have ipad and iphone and the more times goes on the less i need the smart bit of the iphone. I suspect when my trusty 3GS gives up the ghost i will revert to a cheaper handset!

At the end of the day it depends what you want.

As it happened I was recently looking to change my phone's monthly contract as I wasn't using anywhere near the number of minutes (900) the plan had.

I have a BlackBerry Bold 9900, and I very nearly upgraded to the latest BlackBerry, but I think I have finally grown out of the "must have the latest phone" because I kept my phone and just changed the plan (as it happens I now have more of everything but for half the price!).

But, if you're desperate to have the latest phone, then why not sign up to something like Vodafone's Red Hot plan, where you get the latest phone every year (but it looks like you have to pay a high priced plan for it).

I'm in a similar position where I have a 4s but my contract is due at the end of this month. Apple normally release new phones in October so I'd rather wait another couple of months for the 5s rather than being impatient and opting for the 5.

It's highly likely Apple will launch a new handset in Aug/Sept so I would definitely hold off.

Incidentally, I run a busy mobile phone business and about 95% of our sales are iPhones. They are great gadgets but don't rule out HTC or Samsung. My personal preference right now is firmly Android-but let's see what Apple come up with next. They really need to pull out all the stops and surprise us with something radical just like the good old days of Steve Jobs.

I would wait for the iphone 5s as that will probably have more features. i agree with you though, samsung has left apple for dead. i have an iphone 4s and will probably stick with apple because their smart how u have to use the microsim card thingy so its too much hassle to switch brands

I'm struggling to think of another phone I've had over the last 18 years that hasn't either smashed to bits physically, or lost battery functionality within 12 months.

Not only that it still does 99.9% of stuff that the later models do because Apple evolve their models slowly so not annoy their customer base and make them feel like they are being made to upgrade every year. Allowing older models to upgrade Operating systems also contributes to this.

The end result is that someone with a well preserved 4 year old iphone3, still has a quality, modern feeling product, whereas your 'cutting edge' Samsung or HTC will be landfill in a couple of years Bearing this in mind, if I was the OP, I'd just stick with the 4.

You, my friend, have obviously not seen or held the latest HTC one. It is a joy to behold and has a premium feel that even puts Apple to shame. However, I can't argue with you on the Samsung front. Much as they are fantastic technologically, their handsets feel cheap and 'plasticky'.

Your micro sim will work in the latest Samsungs. However, it won't work in the latest iPhone because it needs a.............................nano sim
