Hi Guys

At the tail end of 2021 I uploaded 50k new products to my Magento website, at the time I didn't notice but Magento 2 didn't update the URL's to friend SEO versions

e.g. currently the new product URL's look like this:

When they should look something like this:

I've figured out if I reload these products back into Magento it seems to change them to the friendly version automatically for me.

But my concern is what will happen to my rankings for these pages next time they are crawled?

will Google be smart enough to figure out the URL has changed and so update the url but keep the page ranking? Or should be looking at Redirects for the 50k products to the new SEO friendly urls?

I would have hoped Magento 2 would have automatically redirected the old url's to the new version but it doesn't look like it does :-(

any advice would be appreciated

Or just leave them as they are. Nobody cares about the URL. Not even Google.

ah ok so no easy resolution then. Your next bet is to use analytics and webmaster tools to identify any pages that are getting any sort of heavy traffic, focus on redirects for those only.

Since were talking 50k urls and only 1 year its a possibility Google has not even indexed most of them - and the ones getting little/no traffic you wont suffer any harm for them disappearing and reappearing unassociated.

You are doing tit backwards really

Rather than redirecting a page like this /hitachi-ch22ebp2-spare-parts-list.html

to a page which has /1/2/3/4/hitachi-ch22ebp2-spare-parts-list.html

when there are also these pages that are all the same

    /1/2/3/hitachi-ch22ebp2-spare-parts-list.html
    /1/2/hitachi-ch22ebp2-spare-parts-list.html
    /1/hitachi-ch22ebp2-spare-parts-list.html

All those 4 pages should redirect to /hitachi-ch22ebp2-spare-parts-list.html

At the moment every time an end page "/hitachi-ch22ebp2-spare-parts-list.html" for instance, is in another category or breadcrumb it just creates another end page

Probably too late to do anything about it and hopefully Google will pick the version it likes

As was advised in another thread, you need to sort out your canonicals.

Simpler urls are better for everybody.

I totally want to sort Canonicals and Magento has an option to sort this for me as well. I also had/have a SEO pluggin which has the ability for me to choose the Cano as well.

But I'm worried about any ill affect it may bring to my site, if I swap over everything to my preferred URL.

what options do I have? Hire someone to take on this project? Do it myself under guidance from a pro, flick the switch and hope for the best?
