Hi Guys

I'm currently working an updated version of my Magento site

and my developers have added a pop up message via a link to advertise a product/service we offer. this link appears on each page and when clicked a pop up appears. explaining the service.

Will this create duplicate content issues for the pages? Or because it appears in a pop up it will be ok?

As much as I like this technique if it will cause issues I'll get them just to make it a normal link and just go to dedicated page instead

No it won't affect SEO. But it will annoy people. Far better to just display the content on the page.

I don't agree with the reply it won't effect SEO. The honest answer is that only Google's algorithm can and will decide.

I would still side on the opinion that in 2024 it will have little to no impact as Google is very sophisticated and will have seen this time and time again. But again it's not a straight no. It's a most likely not but potentially.

Ultimately most popups are HTML and hidden either with CSS/JS and then displayed with JS as needed. So from google's stand point they are going to scan the page and read the bare HTML. The content will look the same as any other duplicated content on your website (header/footer/copyright).

As it's a big enough concern for you to be asking the question I would recommend siding on the air of caution and creating a dedicated page.

I will agree with @fisicx that popups are not necessarily the best way to display content so your users would probably prefer a dedicated page anyway.
