I am looking to find out the rough costs of SEO for a classified car website selling cars on finance. My original plan was to employ someone full time in house but I am struggling to find somebody suitable. I want to get into at least the top 5/6 results. I know this will not happen over night and that it will be expensive for this sector, but how expensive will it be?

£1000/month wouldn't be unreasonable but it's probably going to a lot more than that.

You might want to share your website and get it reviewed so that people can recommend what needs to be done and what kind of seo service you would need and the eventual cost.

If it needs work from scratch then an seo provider would give you a quote. You should check with them. Mostly the sites list the packages.

He/She is unable to do that as the membership level doesn't grant them access to the site review area, as site reviews are paid member only.

As an outsider looking into the murky pool of SEO there is one rule that I know applies to all marketplaces...

...if it is a competitive market, the SERPs you are chasing will cost plenty to get it done and done right.

Can your business absorb the cost?

If not, then other avenues need to be employed hence a well thought out marketing strategy needs to be in place BEFORE you decide on a route.

(If one does not already exist of course)

Most SEO can be done cheaply eg: get yourself a 'subject blog' sometimes known as Industry Content. Then pack it out with content, images, even video.

House the blog on your own website to draw traffic in, and make regular posts eg: 100 a month.
classified car website
- but this, are you sure this is the way to go, I mean with the saturated Classified sites market eg: Gumtree, Vivastreet, Loot, Ebay and ofcourse

http://london.craigslist.co.uk/

how do you intend to beat them, what's your strategy? Good luck okay :)

Getting backlinks to it is both time consuming and expensive.

Sure, but content is more time-heavy due to it taking hours of constant writing, not to mention the idea for the content, keeping it updated...

10% done with? - seriously doubt it somehow. This is a publishing Classifieds site, free ads won't be enough, infact suggest scrubbing the entire idea as it offers nothing new to what's out there already. Instead to construct an offers website, then he can deliver the offers via email (the freebie) and display offers as 'search content' - the work will be the same workload-wise, but offers and deal sites are hot right now and easier to get promoted.

The only way a Classifieds ads site can work is to buy an already established player and/or have it as part of a portfolio eg: Fridayads have done this successfully - they even bought brownbook.

Classifieds website from scratch - got to be crazy to even take it on.

speak to bloom agency they are based in Leeds you might find them expensive but I am sure they will give you some good hints too even if you don't hire them. Check seomoz too http://www.seomoz.org/article/recommended and read their articles to get some idea what to look for when you are hiring seo guy. Also email to Test-ok at searchenginehelptips.com and Joshz at v2interactive.net they are in the USA but they have been giving me really good hints on seochat forum and they are really good. If you give them my name (technician27 from seochat) I am sure they will pay you attention and will talk to you on skype or email and will explain you what can they do.
