Sedo - Domain buying

There is a domain that i want and when you go to the link it takes you to a Sedo holding page saying the domain is for sale. There is no price, it just says make an offer. Is this safe and secure? Not scamming or anything :) Can't be sure.

How would you go about doing this?

Sedo is a well known domain broker who offer a service where they will park the domain for the owner and do negotiations for the sale.

There is only one step here, just ask what they are willing to accept then haggle hard. Never take their first price as you can always get them down even if it's just £20.

It's quite simple, you make an offer for what you think it's worth, they will respond with a counter offer and on it goes...

As an example, I recently got a decent domain from there. Made an offer of £100, got a counter offer of £3.5K (aye right then ;)), upped my offer to £150, he came down to £3.4K.

In the end it went to auction and I got it for £165 ;)

Is it just for US based customers? Tried to register to buy a domain 3 times now and it is flagging saying my phone number is not valid and to enter a valid number.

I can assure them it is valid, i know my own number :)

I haven't bought any domains via Sedo but I have sold a couple through them and it has always been a smooth transaction process and the customer service side of things has always been good in my experience. They will ask you which Registrar you want to place the domain with and should guide you through all the necessary stages of the transfer.

Bought a couple of domains from SEDO.

Main problem is that a lot of domainers have an extremely inflated sense of their domain's worth, so don't presume because the domain is for sale, that's it's realistically priced. :)

I made an offer for £45 and they have just emailed me today with a counter offer..... Are you ready?

I know some are worth that, and i can understand the gold.co.uk would be worth that also sex.com etc are worth lots of money, but this domain is no where near as good as that AND its only had 63 visits in the last 7 days, so its not even like there is lots of traffic!

I replied with an offer of £100 and they came back to me again with £10,000 with 'this is my final offer'. I think i will leave it.

Put it on your watchlist and wait for it to go to auction (if it does)...

The domain is available to buy as .net or .co etc, it is just .com and .co.uk that are taken. Do you think the .net or .co would work aswell if you did the same marketing etc? If so, later down the line if i bought the .com , would it be easy to change to the .com or would it confuse people? I could always redirect the .net or .co to the .com when i buy it later down the line...

or is .uk.com a good one to start with? I am not paying over the odds for a domain before i have even started the website :)

As long as you understand it's not actually a domain you'll get, but a subdomain under uk.com and the pricing for them *tends* to be about 4 times that of a .com

Your domain will form part of your branding, online-identity, SEO etc - don't skimp if you've found a pre-registered one that meets your needs.

I understand about not skimping on the branding and online identity, but paying £10,000 for a domain with hardly any traffic, which i don't class as a premium domain is a little crazy :) I know some good businesses that use the .net domain. I will try and see if i can get the .co.uk any cheaper as its owned by someone different.

I'm currently negotiating on a .co.uk domain name that I want personally, usual inflated valuation from the seller, I've put my final offer in but they have gone very quiet?

Not sure what the next step will be...

You have to consider that after Sedo fees as well as the time they have to spend negotiating and handling the domain transfer, that you'll very rarely going to get anything for less than a few hundred pounds unless you get lucky.

By all means try a low offer, they may just want rid of the domain and something is better than nothing, but you have to go in with a realistic idea of what a domain could be worth to the right person.

SEDO is a fantastic source for buying domains. Be sure to haggle and negotiate HARD!
