How very drole! Very drole indeed!

It takes all sorts to make a world - I think that some of you on here have got nothing better to do than slag other people off. Small business being the operative word

See the winking smilie? Know what it means? Don't be so sensitive I was only jesting. You need to have thick skin doing your job! Personally, I'm not rude to any telesales people unless they fail to ask one simple question before they launch into their patter. That question is "is this a convenient time or would you like me to call you back". It's simple and courteous. If they do then I talk so long as it's convenient. If they don't, then they quickly wish they had. :) After all, my time is worth far more to me than their time is to me. :)

Au controire. I didn't take your comment personally. You don't know me at all and I would credit you with not wanting to insult anyone you don't know: I was just trying to laugh at your remark. I use "Barking Mad" on loads of boards (it's where I originate from). You are the first person to say that today :) ;)

What do you do, Chippie? Are you a wood butcher as your non de plume would imply?

I would respectfully tend to disagree with your concern. I don't think anyone having read this thread would want to subject him or herself to a verbal dressing down. There never is any sense in approaching anyone who makes it plain he doesn't want to be approached!

No but my username is relevant to what I did as a living until I stopped doing it and employed others to do it for me! ;) But you won't know what that is until you can read the members boards! ;)

I will indeed have to go and have a look at the members boards....

Actually, there's a fair few things I need for my business. Like VoIP. But I won't be calling the fellow who's been posting from Voipfone - he obviouisly dislikes telemarketers, so I will be placing my order elsewhere once I've decided what I want.

Personally, I don't like being called by telemarketers, especially as the ones I mostly get are US or Indian based investment 'opportunities' - hence the reason I'm on TPS. But they're usually quite good customers and we have many and some very large ones - they like our rates, features and network.

Professionally, so long as their activity is legal and they don't use equipment that could harm our network or reputation I have no issue with them at all.

I think we do know you.

I also think that this is a second account you are using and are attempting to bait people.

I may be wrong but in this case I honestly believe that I have a better chance of being right.

The US or Spanish boiler rooms have to be the most persistent cold callers. Because they were basically trying to scam people I had no issue when feeling in the mood in wasting their time by listening to their pitch and going along with it up to the point they tried to close the sale . Then I would just very calmly keep saying no even though they were getting more and more irate.

In the end they would usually flip out and on more than 1 occasion they informed me I was a God dam Loser before slamming the phone down.

Gary, you certainly do not know me at all. Up until today, I'd never posted on this site, even though I registered around Christmas.

You have confused me with someone else. If this someone else is an unpleasant individual or has crossed you at some point in the past, please don't label or libel me for the misdeeds of others.

4 calls in an hour from the same company today trying to sell me advertising space in the evening standards really useful directory.

The 4th call prompted a "f*** off" as they didn't seem to understand anything else said in a polite way.

They were going through the yellow pages as the first caller explained they had seen my ad there and i might be interested in one in their publication.
I thought they weren't allowed to trawl through the yp for people to ring ?

Ban it or at least regulate this seemingly unregulated industry.

I can understand, though I can't condone your reaction. But I can see that 4 calls, the last eliciting Foxtrot Oscar could be understandable

Libel??? Very strong terminology. Do you actually know what libel means? I would hazard a guess that you do not otherwise I am sure you would not of chosen to say it.

Yes, I do know what libel means... And to be fair libel is what usually comes with ad hominem attacks.

I've read some of the views in this thread and anyone could believe that people like me - who use the telephone to make a living within the rules are some form of anti-Christ.

Tell me. I have health problems and house bound. I can only work around 3 days a week anyway (due to these ongoing health issues). I don't sign on, nor do I claim any benefits - even though I might well be entitled to some. Do you think I should stop "harassing" others and go and ponce off the State? Don't 'we' all pay enough already, or would you like to keep me too?

Telemarketing is something I excel at. Something where I leave some fit & healthy individuals to shame. It's one of the few things I actually can do where my ailments don't hinder me.

But in any case, look at yourself. If you work you either provide a service or make something which has to be sold to someone else for you to eat and feed your family. I personally hate people dumpling leaflets through my letterbox. Have you ever advertised in a newspaper to get your sales message across? Perhaps you have a shop.... I have problems with red and brown visually. Is your shop dressed in these colours? How thoughtless of you! I bet it's got a step outside too, eh???

Absolutely to the point - people who resort to abuse first are inadequate. If you take your arguments to their conclusions then the Americans should throw out all the people there who originate from the Middle East, because they're ALL bombers!!!!!!!!

Hi again Barking. Yesterday I posted the following:

Personally, I'm not rude to any telesales people unless they fail to ask one simple question before they launch into their patter. That question is "is this a convenient time or would you like me to call you back". It's simple and courteous. If they do then I talk so long as it's convenient. If they don't, then they quickly wish they had. :) After all, my time is worth far more to me than their time is to me. :)

However, you didn't comment. Can you just let me know your thoughts on why:
  • anyone should speak to a telemarketer, who does not even have the courtesy to ask if it's convenient to speak and
  • if you don't ask that one simple question, why you are surprised when people are rude to you when you have just been disrespectful to them and their time?
After all what goes round comes round and all that! :)

I think the problem here is the jumping to conclusions that the other party is an ******** and behaving so as to get one's insults in first. I stated that I almost always start what I say with Would it be possible to speak with the person who oversees xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx? If that person were you and you'd answered the phone, would you really expect me to take (and actually start wasting) your time with asking again if it's okay to talk with you?

The problem is social inadequacy - and to be fair it's on both sides of the fence. Approaching other people to do business with them is part of life. We all have to do it some how. Getting one's insults in first simply because someone else is trying to do their job is just a reflection of a poor upbringing. Are all football supporters hooligans then? All drivers don't have insurnace, and they've all got bald tyres and have had a good drink too, eh??

A fellow in an earlier thread asked me if I'd be rude to a 7th vistor disturbing my tea. I don't expect people to be telepathic... But in any case, abuse is just that - abuse. And it speaks reams about the person giving it.

And that is a big mistake. Just because I answer the telephone doesn't mean it's a convenient time to talk.

Dear disabled Anti Christ.

I match your disabled label with a race card.

And I raise you a pair of facial defects (slanty eyes) and a mild language barrier.

Your turn.

Yes I would expect it if someone had put the call through. How would they know whether I was busy if they had just redirected the call. How long does it take to ask anyway? As a matter of interest this doesn't apply to me as I'm always in a position to answer my own phone and if I'm not then they would have to leave a message anyway. Even when I call friends or family I ask if they're free to talk, since I have no idea what's going on on the other end of the phone. :)

Can't comment on this since I don't prejudge people and don't have a desire to get the insult in first but if that's how you see your prospects then I can see it could be a problem for you. ;)

Sorry BM but I just had to laugh at this faux pas! I personally love dumplings when they are made nicely but I must admit to never having had one posted through my letterbox! :D:D

I think dumpling posting is a new government incentive to beat poverty, how could anyone complain they are hungry after getting free dumplings?

There are ways of creating direct mailing using attention grabbers that completely defuse the "oh no not more junk mail" response

......and used before a cold calling these can pave the way in...

I have to say that I built a service business entirely based entirely on cold calling - which focussed on medium to large businesses and public bodies and rarely if ever got a rude response.

So I wonder whether the "rude" response is mainly coming from small businesses in which time much more directly equates to money in pockets....

I thought CJD had the answer with his calling system recorded message

You say (politely) sorry I will just take this other call...

Transferring onto a message that says

"I am sorry! - all of our staff are currently busy talking to other telemarketers....if one of them becomes free, we may take your call...but it could be half an hour...

Or something!!!

You really are quite a guy, aren't you?

Did your parents beat you as a child? Or is being a cyber warrior the only way you can muster the courage to be all conquering (when your not abusing telephone enquirers, that is)?

So impressive. I am completely phased by your literacy strengths! You should be a diplomat. Skilled negotiating skills, and all.

To the rest of you (who are on the other side). I wish you well but I don't want to hang around to suffer abuse like this. I could retaliate and stoop to this fellow's level but I am better than him. I'm also a man.

Have a great day

Seriously, you should research the person you're replying to before hurling abuse.

And get that giant chip seen to...

Ok I will take your bet on.
I have 3 shops non of which have steps outside and none have red or brown as a colour scheme.

I am not really sure here why it is you are becoming so defensive and are trying to justify why it is you are doing telesales. The reasons you are employed in this sector are irrelevant. If you conduct yourself in a professional way whilst doing your work then I dont see you having a problem if on the other hand you are like the other 95% of callers then this whole thread should be of interest to you. A professional very rarely gets abuse thrown at them down the phone, the unprofessional ones tend to moan at how people react to them. Remember that a professional will blame themselves for not advancing with a call an unprofessional will always blame the person who answered.

Gary

Whichever gender, (s)he certainly made an impression on me. A real winning attitude, for sure.

I think I'll make this my last post on this forum. I can see that there is a vociferous minority which have given me the impression I am not welcome nor is my possible custom.

Pity, because the articles which the editor writes are quite informative.

Bye everyone

Faux pas? Typing error. But little things. Glad it's amused you

Chill out mate, no need to be quite so defensive! I said I thought it was funny haha not funny peculiar! Seems to me you don't really like yourself very much. It's probably a good job you work alone at home, as you seem to have a lot of difficulty getting on with people!

Hi Georgina.

If you are in to telemarketing I would strongly recommend listening to some Jim Rohn Audio. When I worked in telemarketing, the difference between the top and bottom sales people was their attitude. Here are some Jim Rohn / Zig Ziglar thoughts that may help.

1, Don't leave the field....making a website will not make you sales, don't let some miserable person affect your sales. If you do that, they have won.

2, When you get your own planet, you can have it your own way, while you are on this one, you'll just have to accept that there are some people who are miserable. The best sales people I worked with were on the best part of 100k and they still got spoken to like **** by some miserable gatekeeper who was on 12k a year. Don't you their bad attitude bring you down.

3, It's a numbers game. The best batsmen in baseball have a 3/10 strike rate. 7 times out of 10, they are out and they get paid millions of dollars a year. I'll repeat, don't let the energy vampires bring you down to their level.

I would hate to think I was rude to anyone on the phone. I do get a large volume of telesales calls. I know I am acting on my boss's behalf when rejecting these calls, after all I am his PA and know what we are looking to review or purchase and what we are not. Part of my role is to filter his calls, and as Office Manager as well it is actually me that they need to speak to more often than not.

What annoys me with some of them is that I can politely decline a call then have the person on the other end of the phone launch into a tirade and quite often a very hard sell. Sorry but I don't have time for it, and should the situation change in the future they would be the last person I would call.

The calls that annoy me most of all are the ones who say either they are not trying to sell me anything when they are, or the people who ring up purporting to be from somewhere else, i.e. I am ringing on behalf of BT, sorry, you are not, I have a named contact at BT and know you are not ringing on their behalf.

I have I am ashamed to say hung up on people when they would not go away or accept a polite refusal. On many more occasions I have had them be rude to me and then hang up.

It isn't an easy job, I accept that, but there is no need for the lack of courtesy which sometimes comes from both sides.

This is the sort of b0ll0cks that every receptionist hates. The 'miserable' person is the poor sod that has to defend the company from torrents of useless sales calls from arseh0les playing a 'numbers game'.
