Rude Receptionists- Telemarketing

Sadly UKBF is littered with people who flushed their money down the cr*pper on SEO and PPC campaigns. Not laughable to them I would imagine.

Please find me anyone who had a well run SEO or PPC campaign that failed, your talking about things you don't understand.

Please find me anyone who had a well run SEO or PPC campaign that failed, .

I agree a well run SEO or PPC campaign wouldn't fail, in the same way a well run telemarketing campaign wouldn't fail. In fact SEO/PPC doesn't work for everyone in the same way that telemarketing doesn't work for everyone.

Unfortunately "well run" is the operative phrase.

Valid point:)
These days a lot of firms (and one man operators) use a call answering service for just this reason.Frankly, nobody is likely to change the telemarketing process even legislation and TPS cannot seem to do that so we have to see it as a cost of doing business. Using an answering service (and I do not run one !) has many advantages for the business user. Several have been advised and recommended on UKBF.

That's even more annoying than answering the calls yourself. We did try putting a phone number on our website for the benefit of our customers and had a 3rd party company answer the calls for us. But we had to pay per call.

So what happened was, some annoying idiot would call the customer phone number and ask to speak to whoever was in charge. The answering service would say I was not available and ask to take a message. Then the salesperson would just hang up - and try again later (presumably figuring if they called enough times they'd eventually get through to someone that would put them through to me).

So we ended up removing the phone number and cancelling the service because these idiot sales people were costing us a fortune by just keep calling again and again in an attempt to speak to someone, even when the answering service made it clear that a) they couldn't speak to me, b) we weren't interested in whatever it was they were selling.

why does everyone get so angry on here??????
Maybe because we really hate telemarketers, and their attempts to justify or explain their actions, while completely ignoring the fact that we just don't want their calls no matter what they think, just annoys us even more...?

Your kidding, really?

So you choose to neglect any SEO or PPC and have a terrible website despite knowing this, doesn't that make you question your intelligence?

But unlike telemarketing SEO and PPC is a growing market, I don't really see how you can argue this anymore - I'm sure you'll just resort to pretending you're still right and poorly attempting to mock what I say meanwhile actually just making yourself look childish.

I agree that SEO and PPC are big business, and will continue to grow and increase in importance as part of a balanced marketing plan.

Interestingly, it is one of the biggest areas for telesales companies at the moment as SEO and PPC providers frantically try to get market share?!?!

There is room for everyone at the moment, all types of selling and marketing. That might change but only time will tell.

This was not a professsional answering service. If it were they would determine which were random sales calls and you would not be charged for such. Professional answer services deal well with these nuisance calls and do not charge their client. Your posts make it sound like you are getting these calls 24/7 ? Are you quite sure that within the context of your ''hatred'' as you call it you have not made yourself a target for malicious calls ?

At home the advice would be to have an answering machine (not the BT service) to screen all calls.Your friends and family would know you use this so it should not be a problem. The most iniquitous calls (and often bogus/scams) are utilising autodiallers...never take a call which comes via an autodialler (its the one where they ask you to press a number to continue).

what an absolute big headed prat - tell you what idiot, I`ll buy an answer phone for MY PERSONAL number, just so <bwf> like you can get their jollies bragging how they got dear old Mrs Smith too scared to answer her phone after dark.

hey "the even changing the law can`t stop us ................"

and before the mods delete this - if he rings me, he would get a lot more of the same - only worse

shoot the lot of them, seriously, shoot them all.

Saxondale, I agree with you completely this time.

I wish that those involved in the dark side of telesales stop bragging about appalling behaviour as if it was a badge of honour, it gives everyone in the industry a bad name.

My previous posts have often defended telesales as an important part of a balanced sales campaign. I will not defend lack of morals and bad business.

There are good and bad in all industries, I welcome the good firms defending their business but can the ones that behave the wrong way just keep quiet about what they are doing until somebody eventually shuts them down or they fail as a business because you can't work like that forever.

Phew, thats more like it Saxondale, for a moment there I thought the world was about to stop spinning on it's axis!

Let's be honest, like you, I am never wrong my opinions rarely waiver but I will also listen to debate. My overall opinion hasn't changed.

As Brian Clough once said about a player who had an issue to resolve

'we sat down, discussed the matter and then agreed that I was right'

As mentioned to Saxondale before I am not in the cold calling business, but thst does not stop me having knowledge of it and yes I am reporting your abusive and threatening post to the mods. This is a business forum not your personal playground. Sinister posts such as this are not funny.

As for the rest of you backing this guy I can assure you not a single cold call will not be made today by thousand upon thousand of companies as a direct result of this often infantile thread.

This is a highly irresponsible post ...you are condoning an obvious loose cannon who is suggesting shooting people. You cannot misread his post and I hope the mods take note of this. For your further education I am not a cold caller, I jusy know the business well and offered advice.

I think everyone needs to calm down on this one.

I apologise if I have upset anybody at any time on this forum. My original post about people who brag about bad business practise was not aimed at any individual but a general comment on some of the things that have been said about cold calling. Captaincloser I did not direct any comments at you.

If you have seen previous posts between myself and saxondale you will see that we rarely see eye to eye. I am not condoning anyone saying they are going to shoot somebody, although I have to question just how serious a post like that is. I think some of things Saxondale says are wrong and have made that clear in other posts, in turn he thinks I am wrong most of the time and we have had some banter as a result, hopefully taken in good spirit by him, as any back from him is taken by me.

If I have upset anyone, at any point, I unreservadly apologise to them. I think this forum is a really useful business forum and I try to make the majority of my posts constructive and well thought through. Sometimes, it is nice to have some friendly banter though, lets get things in perspective.

I am reporting your abusive and threatening post to the mods.

It's hardly abusive, this is a forum and forums let people express there opinions freely, to remove that post would be a contradiction of the meaning of a forum.

As for threatening "shoot them, shoot them all" is a pretty common expression and although it was slightly reworded it still has the same meaning, one that isn't to be taken literally.

In a few years time few people will be cold calling because they would have got it in there heads it doesn't work anymore, and the majority of cold calling businesses / people using cold calling as a marketing technique will die out. (yes I said die, does that mean you're going to report me?)

I think a reality check is needed.

"shoot the lot of them, shoot them all2 is not issuing threats to kill, it is a simple term used daily by thousadns if not millions of people the world over.

Same as 'drown them at birth', ' they need to be hung up by their (insert body part here), and 'put them all up against a wall and shoot the buggers'.

NONE of the above is suggesting that action be taken, it is a simple statement that expresses how deep the bad feeling is on a matter towards a group of people carrying out an action.

As I said, some reality check is needed here.

you have not upset me actually and thanks for this post:). Saxondale is a completely different case as regular users of this site may or may not agree.

I am now going out for a belated Xmas lunch with my best client so I am placing my computer on the back burner for this thread to simmer along till tomorrow ! Thanks again for your post and no offence taken.

We allow posts within the rules, we take action against posts outside the rules.

The thread is about cold callers, the 'kill them all and let god sort em out' thing was in reply to the statement that nothing can stop cold callers, not even changing the law.

As I said, a little perspective is needed here.

Interestingly, it is one of the biggest areas for telesales companies at the moment as SEO and PPC providers frantically try to get market share?!?!

The most dishonest business cold calls I get relate to SEO/PPC. They are the most likely people to make verbal promises that I know are completely implausible (eg guaranteeing top click position for the whole month in a PPC campaign on a common set of keywords), and which aren't backed up by the contract if you show enough interest to ask to look at the contract/order form. I shudder to think of people being taken in by these merchants.

Somebody once called me and said, "we can get you top of Google", so I told her if she could get me top of Google for "car insurance" I'd give her £100k but only once I was top. Suffice to say it was a rather short conversation.

for the record I have had death threats this week from someone cold calling (I hinted at it in an earlier thead)

I`m big enough and ugly enough to not be upset by it, I also have customers who have been driven insane (litterally) by it.

Ringing someone without permission (either given or implied) has to stop.

This is indeed a business forum, and we are discussing the affect cold callers have on business.

i must bemissing something.

Actually this thread is really cheering me up, it's hilarious. Saxondale is like one of the "Old Gits" from Harry Enfield... Errr You don't wanna do it like that...

It does brighten one's day, doesn't it! Particularly for those of us who work on 'THE DARK SIDE'

I assume you are one of those thoroughly horrible telemarketers as well??

Just a thought as well, I wonder how many of the anti-telesales brigade can honestly say they have never phoned a potential client to discuss business......... is that really that different from a cold call?? And before everyone goes nuts again, I am making the assumption that the cold caller in this example is a really nice person and very professional.... they do exist

yes, it`s a totally different thing, the potential customer has given permission.

which part of tps did you miss?

no, you are missing my point, have you never phoned a potential new customer looking to tell them about your business 'whatever that may be' field based business developers do it every day to get appointments. When they phone that person, they haven't given permission, its just business. You are trying to open their mind to a new business. It is what makes the business world go around. I will make the point again, telesales done correctly is just as valid as field sales, internet sales, email marketing, advertising etc etc etc

TPS is incredibly relevant and all call centres should always be working with TPS cleared data. I know not all do and once again I will make the point, do not judge everyone by the lowest common denominator.

I am beginning to think you may be more stubborn than me Saxondale. I think you would make a superb telesales agent.........

erm, cold calling telesales - have you not been paying attention?

TPS is incredibly relevant and all call centres should always be working with TPS cleared data. I know not all do and once again I will make the point, do not judge everyone by the lowest common denominator.

in that case then, I do not believe there is a sufficient number of public not on tps to justify this as a sales exercise today - prove me wrong

I am beginning to think you may be more stubborn than me Saxondale. I think you would make a superb telesales agent.........

I would rather shoot myself.

I really give up with you, you do not read anything or think about what you are saying............

You are always asking for industry data, if you claim most of the population is on the TPS, show me where you got that information from.

I am getting very close to telling you what I really think

there you go, true colors showing now.

I cannot say I have met anyone who isn`t on TPS, hence the sudden surge in "surveys" etc, etc every single time we get a thread like this the result is no one wants to be called.

telesales is dying and not a moment too soon.
