Rude Receptionists- Telemarketing

  • Thread starter Thread starter georgina.suntel

As a direct result of all recent UKBF threads and posts there will be no fewer cold calls made tomorrow morning.

Telemarketing is used by a high % of all companies from multi-nationals down to one man bands.

This thread does make one wonder if some people would be better off without a phone in their business ? The stress of saying 'No thank you' and putting the phone down must be enormous for some it seems.

What annoys me is not so much the fact they call, more the fact they have no idea what they're on about and can only follow a script. As soon as you take them off script they're like a fish out of water. That's what gets me - theyre trying to make out theyre experts in both what they're selling, and the business theyre calling, hence why they can tell you why their product is perfect for you - yet they havent a clue about either.

why would you not take your telemarketing budget and spend it on PPC or Paper based marketing material that works for brand awareness and advertising.

Cos 9 times out of 10, thats a waste of my hard earned money (made from Telemarketing by the way). I mean paper based? don't make me laugh. I got a recycle bin full of that cr*p. As for PPC hmmm lets make Google even richer... I think not

So Mercedes are wasting their time advertising in the Sunday Times? they should do telemarketing instead? be sure to tell them that.

PPC is also worse than phoning strangers up? according to your comparison.

So carrying these thoughts forward, the guys on here who make money from creating PPC campaigns for clients are rated below telemarketing for success rates? and those clients should scrap PPC, scrap Google, scrap a website and just phone people out of the blue and say 'oi mate, wanna buy some windows?'

Mind you I would get your website redesigned before you considered using the internet as a form of advertising

Your current website must put more people off than it encourages

Mind reading my friend... I may have had a glass of wine writing my post last night but no way do I remember writing all that.

being in the telemarketing business I find that you will always get a receptionist/gatekeeper that thinks they own the company and speaking to a telemarketer with some sort of authoritative tone is just a way to make them self's feel more important! as a telemarketer I'd just do what I can to politely wind them up and give the impression I don't really care what they say to me and no matter how rude they are it wont affect me in the slightest... effectively having the last laugh!
generally gatekeepers are specifically told not to let calls from "our kind" through so generating a good rapport with them first is a great help, it may take one or two calls but get on first name terms (a 5 minute friend) ask if you can send your info to them, make them feel they are involved, maybe even ask them to email you with a time best to call back.

Personally...I love gatekeepers as they always seem to give me most of the information i need to make a successful lead/sale.

keep plugging away - make friends - get the sale!!!!

the problem is 99% of the time telemarketers take this exact attitude. I am the gatekeeper, I am also the owner - you trying to be smart with me is only going to make me put the phone down on you, even more when you don't believe that I really am in a cherry picker 30ft in the air! Now if you had bothered to research my business, you would have known that this would probably be the case already, but you dont and you assume i'm this massive corporation with 20 receptionists working for me, maybe one day but not at this point in time and if/when i get to that stage, my receptionists will be well prepped on dealing with the likes of you.
In my last organisation, we had a receptionist but she also quoted, processed orders, did the bookeeping, purchasing etc and you didnt think she had any authority either. Give me a break, telemarketers like yourself who are that lazy to stereotype every company into how you want it to be so you can get an easy sale!

that is what their job is to be rude to cold callers that are wasting time with stupid offers.

2 things I hate the most
1. cold callers
2. people on the street trying to stop you for some stupid made up charity. tell you what instead of mugging people on the street go and do some leafleting for businesses and give what you earn for the charity:mad:

Mercedes, like all major car companies have extensive telemarketing departments. What are you really saying ?

that they don't put telemarketing at the top of the sheet when it comes to brainstorming marketing ideas.

'I know what we'll do Doug, we'll phone lots of random people and really pee them off while continually saying the name Mercedes, Mercedes, Mercedes, eventually, all that brand awareness will pay off and we'll be cooking on gas baby yeehaw'

Why are we having an argument anyway? .. oh yeah, thats right, because there are many of us who haven't had a telemarketing campaign work, at all.

I personally don't believe that telemarketing is the right decision for the OP. Word of mouth and a more organic approach win you stars. Phoning businesses at random like it's some kind of game while it costs them a lot of money is not my idea of a good marketing plan.

Oh and telemax did take a swipe at Google, claiming that Telemarketing is not as 90% ineffective as PPC or paper based. Clearly, those of us who don't use telemarketing all day long are missing a trick.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK ON TELEMAX! I AM JUST SAYING THAT TELEMARKETING GIVES ME THE WRONG IMPRESSION OF THE BUSINESSES THAT PHONE ME!

had to put that in bold as more handbags will be thrown around otherwise.

You can't make telemarketing work for you therefore it doesen't work ? What kind of an argument is that ? There are few businesses that would not get more clients with some telemarketing help from professional well trained in-house or contract workers.

Also, who says telemarketing is about making random calls ? Again the fact that amateurs make random calls does not enter the argument on the success or failure of marketing campaigns utililising the telephone.

I still maintain that those having severe difficulties hanging up on unwanted calls should have their phones disconnected.

telemarketing doesn't work for my business, it hasn't worked for a furniture making company locally, it hasn't worked for a window fitting company who hired someone 3 days a week and had to let them go because the ROI was only just more than breaking even. BUT that is not the base of my argument, i'm saying that i personally hate receiving sales calls. So does everyone i meet in fact. That is the argument here, not the success rates as such but the image it gives of your business. We all know how badly BT cold call people and offer random nonsense at silly prices without giving the facts. Who wants to have a business regarded in the same tone as BT?

It's not difficult to hang up the phone..but it's a tad annoying when you get a sales call in the middle of hanging off a roof or fiddling with a plug socket or talking to a client and some twit on the other end of the phone starts reading off a script. 'would you like to buy some usb pens, we have a special offer on' oh sod off.

Valid point:)
These days a lot of firms (and one man operators) use a call answering service for just this reason.Frankly, nobody is likely to change the telemarketing process even legislation and TPS cannot seem to do that so we have to see it as a cost of doing business. Using an answering service (and I do not run one !) has many advantages for the business user. Several have been advised and recommended on UKBF.

At home the advice would be to have an answering machine (not the BT service) to screen all calls.Your friends and family would know you use this so it should not be a problem. The most iniquitous calls (and often bogus/scams) are utilising autodiallers...never take a call which comes via an autodialler (its the one where they ask you to press a number to continue).

Just continue to mock but I assure you I will have the last laugh, as you're incapable of moving with the times and evolving your business along with your arrogance and naivety your business is doomed to fail, It's only a matter of time.

My business will continue to evolve and grow and yours will fade out.

It never ceases to amaze me the level of responses any post on telemarketing generates!

I worked in Financial services for 20 years and we were hated in that!! I now work as a development manager for a telemarketing company, hated againg by the looks of it!!!!!!

I just need to go into used car sales and estate agency and I will have the full set, a man could get a complex............

p.s isn't it just another form of sales at the end of the day, I dislike the often useless (not always of course) salespeople you find in some of the major retailers but that doesn't mean I am rude to them, and it doesn't mean they are not needed. Variety is the spice of life, one man's something is another man's something else (or something like that). Keep the telesales posts flowing though, they are amusing due to the hatred you can feel oozing from the screen!!!

Maybe in your head those one liners are funny? :|

It's nice to see you continue your arrogance so it will be nice to see you fail :)

It amazes me that people use there business name on a forum and mock other members (poorly attempt to), really shows your customers the professionalism of your company  combine that with your poor website and I'm surprised you get any work at all (if you do)

Aha, now we have it. So it's ok to mock me because I'm a telemarketer but when I make a bit of light banter about your posts, you throw your toys out of the pram.

the fact you`ve rung me without invite is rude itself, your comment about insecure shows how insecure you really are.

really telesales people deserve all the "abuse" they get.

C'mon, give it a rest now. Every post of yours I seem to read makes you come across as a really bitter person.

hope that wasn't aimed at me Mike?

Of course not.

I didn't mock you because of your profession, I mocked you for your ignorance towards the future of advertising, the comment you made about google was laughable from a business point of view, you are set in your ways and that will always doom people to fail.

I'm not angry or "throwing my toys out of the pram" quite the opposite i'm finding your posts quite funny (in the laugh at you rather than with you kinda way)

............and then join the Jehovah's Witnesses and knock on people's doors.

...then become a student with silly dreadlocked hair and a bright orange jacket, drink as many energy drinks as possible and stop/confront people in the street trying to get bank details for charity...

Sadly UKBF is littered with people who flushed their money down the cr*pper on SEO and PPC campaigns. Not laughable to them I would imagine.

Nobody knows what is going to happen in the future, not you, I or anybody. To suggest otherwise is physically impossible.

More and more people are looking for things on the internet, offline advertising is becoming less effective by the day, these are facts - and it doesn't take a genius to see what will happen in the future because of this.
