Registering a Limited company under reduced name?

Yet another trier is launching an AI created piece of software to try and grab a bit of my market. This time they've opened a page on Instagram and registered a limited company. The wag behind it folded 2 companies a couple of years ago which were both registered using his full Christian, Middle and double barrelled Surname. This time the registration uses just the Christian name and first 'barrel' of the surname. The shortened version appears to be his preferred social media nom de plume.

AI tells me this is illegal unless the name change has been done by Deed Poll and there's no suggestion of such on The Gazette?

How do you know that the previous name wasn't incorrect?

When I have registered a company via somewhere like a bank, they use my middle names. When I register direct, I don't use my middle names. Am I breaking laws or deceiving people?

If you are verifying your identity the documents need to align. Many organisations will not accept unenrolled deed poll. So whilst CH may not require it, you can’t then prove your identity.

An enrolled Deed Poll is an official record, but as your quote says, anyone can make an unenrolled Deed Poll. I worked at the Passport Office. We accepted unenrolled Deed Polls as evidence of change of name. CH did not check names, so there are many examples of different versions of the same name being treated as differen people on CH. I don't know if they have tightened up on that yet.

I think director verification is meant to sort that but I have discovered it doesn't always work.
