question about Alexa traffic rank

I have two websites
one has been around for a long time it has an Alexa traffic rank of 24,000,000 ish. There used to be a google adwords on it.

the other is fairly new, has a rank of 13,000,000. I have got a google adwords on this one too.

that's correct. Harldy a true representation of the world wide web, but their best guess. A bit like how the work out TV viewing figures.

All above is spot on. I would say that Alexa is quite a good indicator of trend where a history is available.

Alexa is nothing in the real world, tech sites always tend to score highly, as do geeky sites, because those are the type opf people who traditionally have used the alexa toolbar.

I agree, Alexa ranking is really only important to other people who use Alexa rankings toolbar.

I know that the results are very subjective and do not measure the actual number of visits and traffic you get to your site.

How it works?

Alexa has a room full of Monkeys.
Each monkey as a pair of dice and a laptop randomly showing domain names.
Everytime the monkey takes a dump, the dice are rolled and a highly complex algorithm based around the total of the dice roll, the site a random monkey is looking at, and the height of the droppings is all put together to determine your "ranking".

Basically it comes down to the Alexa ranking being a steaming-pile-of-monkey-poo ...
