is there a simple way to add an inexpensive, paid for pdf download service to my site, allowing people to logon and view / download again if they loose the previous download?.
Does it need to be a shopping cart, to accept payments or can it be connected to paypal somehow.
i want it to be fully automated, i would rather not to have to "manually" send any emails.

There are plenty of solutions, just need to search for them. I found this one in about 30 seconds: http://www.iventa.com/Paid-Download-Management-System.aspx. Don't know if it's any good but it is an example of what's available.

try mal-e commerce. they have a direct link payment system built into there free oscommerce package. we have been using Mal-E for over 2 years and its really easy to use.. best of all its FREE!

Joomla with Virtuemart. Both are free. You can stipulate download validity times and / or quantities.

Virtuemart uses Paypal and is fully automated in as much as the client pays online; Paypal confirms payment; client is sent email with download link.

Simple.

Yes, Mal-E Commerce can be used on any website.. you dont need any OSCommerce package.. its a great way of adding E-commernce to an exisiting website.

Actually, Mal-E is an OsCommerce alternative, I believe. It's a shopping cart in its own right as is OsCommerce. I know a LOT of people who use it and like it very well.

Joomla with nBill can handle paid-for downloads. Joomla is free and nBill is £65 for a one-off licence fee. I use nBill as my sales are too complex for a normal shopping cart and I have found the developer to be an absolute star in tech support.
