We all want a passive income but they are not easy to come across so I want to know what you all do to earn money that requires a little effort (i would like to diversifiy)

I personally have an amazon book that brings in a little money and I also have youtube videos that bring in the very seldom sale.

What about the rest of you, how else can i make money passively?

Thanks :)

Pro versions of my plugins. Brings in about $30/day. Adsense on a bunch of info sites earns another $150/month. It's about as passive as it gets.

But thats the issue with *passive* income is it really passive?

You will find whatever income stream it is your amount of 'work' you do on it correlates to the revenue it generates.

My courses generate passive income but historically I make more the more effort I put into promoting courses.

I find the most passive income comes from buy to let properties; thats not without its issues but out of making money from courses, sites, books etc. its probably the most hands off.

The 'passive income dream' that gets flogged across the web annoys me frankly.

What is the definition on passive income?

From Wiki "The American Internal Revenue Service categorizes income into three broad types, active income, passive income, and portfolio income. It defines passive income as only coming from two sources: rental activity or "trade or business activities in which you do not materially participate."

In the list are those mentioned above, but also
* Pensions
* Bank Interest - ha ha - that said peer to peer lending platforms aren't bad if you are happy about the risk

You have brought up an interesting way of earning money. Many people have original work which might be able to be offered as a Kindle book.

On reaching the age of 65, somebody somewhere sent me a letter, telling me that I was now 65.

So what, I thought.

On one occasion, the NHS told me that (just because I was 60) I should do something disgusting into an envelope and send it to Cardiff. As I rather like the Welsh, I decided to ignore them. Probably somebody who was a radical anti-devolution activist! They said that they were a part of some radical wing, called the Bowel Movement.

They definitely sounded bonkers!

But then I got another letter that told me that because I was 65, I was entitled to free money. Not only that, but that because the government has been printing quite a lot of free money, there is a danger of all that free money causing inflation, so my free money would be index-linked (so they called it). Of course, now that my free money is index-linked, they will have to print even more free money to cover my index-linked free money.

I worked it out and over the years, unless I fall down dead in the near future, it comes to enough money to buy a house. Except I already have a house.

I also get a way-leave thing from the electricity people. They cross our land somewhere and give me £47.

do we really have no amazon kindle book people here though?
You have to write the book first and that's a bit too much like hard work. I like to earn money by putting in the least amount of effort.

in fact a freelancer will write a book for $50, its just how you go about getting it to the higher ranked books on amazon :) which i guess people do with fake reviews

Yes and its this low quality 'just get it done at any cost' attitude that has clogged with kindle book store with hundreds of cheap rubbish. I remember taking a course on udemy about becoming a kindle author. The course instructor was advocating writing a book of about 1000 words. 1000 words??? Thats a blog post not an ebook, shocking.

I earn £300-£1000 off affiliate websites, they took a lot of work to set up initially but now I hardly touch them (check once a month to make sure they are running ok).

back in 2002 i knew someone who genuinely made over 5k a month net from casino affiliate commissions. his websites USP was he offered all the blackjack odds on charts. people would look for those, then perhaps join an online casino from one of his sites banner links - he then got 5-30% of that clients accounts lifelong LOSSES.

he's still about, as is the site. a very passive income, but getting good rankings would be a chore in 2016 as its ultra competetive.

What are your thoughts on affiliate marketing in 2016? Would you do what you did again?

I've thought about it a reasonable amount but not properly got stuck in.

I have a couple of amazon affiliate sites, one makes a few hundred quid a month, purely because its involved in high ticket items which happens to be an area I'm interested in. Don't think it could ever be anything to retire on, but certainly worthwhile to keep running as it requires very very little maintenance and its always nice to have made a bit of cash whilst you were sleeping!

I uploaded a video of my cat meowing in time to "If you're happy and you know it say meow!" to YouTube.

Company gave me £250 + 50% of any advertising income for the rights to the video.

Ended up being about £500 in total.

Just need to think of more songs for my cat to sing :)

I have some adsense and affiliate websites that basically run themselves (I spend time looking at the reports, but that's just because). I also use them for SEO experimenting, so that generates another line of income which is definitely not passive.

I just wouldn't be able to write an ebook, just too time consuming and Amazon pays peanuts. By the time I made enough to cover the cost of the hours spent doing the book probably ebooks wouldn't exist anymore :)

I have a 1 bed flat in London, I couldn't list on Airbnb so I list on Spacehop. Freelancers & Startups use my WIF while I'm off at work. I find I make about £100 p/w and they are always gone by the time I arrive home. So easy to make decent money without any effort! Ultimate Passive income earner
