I guess PR is dead specifically.PageRank is not dead. PageRank is still a core part of Google algo and is used to calculate the value of links to and from a webpage. The PR score you used to see on the Google toolbar is dead.
Note: it's called PageRank because of its inventor Larry Page not because it's a measure of the rank of a page.
