Norton Ghost

I use Norton Ghost for back ups and I can’t find anywhere in the manual to say that it backs up my emails within Office Outlook. Can anyone confirm either way if it does or doesn’t??

Hi Mathew - hello - long time since I've seen you around

It depends which folders on your pc you get it to back up.

I guess if it backs up your program files and Outlook is in there then the answers yes.

Likewise if it creates an image of your whole machine then yes it should back them up too.

Not sure about backing up just your outlook with ghost, but if you ghost the entire drive/partition it will.

allow me to clarify.
To backup your pc with an image is a grand thing to do. Get hit by a virus or something, be operational again within a few mins.

However the imaging part of ghost is not designed to take regular backups like that.
If i remeber rightly backing up email should be done through backing up the pst file. You might want to check on this though.

If you use the xp operating sys, you can schedule regular backups and have them saved to another part of your computer for burning to CD/DVD later.

Is the ghost image similar in size to the original files or does it do some snazzy compression? If so, by what percentage?

Ghost has the option to compress the image, but say you had a 200 gig drive, and only 5 gig was used, then an uncompressed ghost image would be around 5 gig.
Outlook yes, its pst files, somehwat different with outlook express though, the link I posted above explains (I didnt read it thoroughly but appears to be correct)

The latest version of Ghost DOES have the facility to do 'hot backups' i.e. every set period it will just backup what has changed since the last time it was backed up.

ic, i think its an old version of ghost i use. Mine just takes images.
there is also the backup facility in XP that i use

I have heard of later versions doing backups, which is why in my original post I said I wasnt sure. Personally I backup my stuff manually, and wouldnt even bother to attempt a full system state backup on a workstation,that said, I have found ghost to be reliable right from early versions - and you can script it unlike some of the other cloning utilities there are about - so maybe I'll look at a later version sometime.

Is it Microsoft Outlook you use?

I use Acronis disk image and then use Genie Outlook Back-Up 6.0 which backs up everything in Microsoft Outlook, including settings, e-mails and e-mail accounts.

IIRC, the Outlook data file lives deep down within the user profile (Documents & Settings folder) rather than in the Program Files folder where the Outlook executables are.

i never fully trust outlook for my addresses, so i created a yahoo account and back all my addies to the internet as well

You can export address book from outlook and outlook express.
I personally move the outlook express store folder rather than having it buried deep in application data, and simply back up the entire folder as part of routine backup.
