New Name for Business??

So I moved here from Canada to the UK and brought my business with me. I thought I had done all the research and I thought by the time I got here I would be up there in the google search, boy was I wrong! I have yet to have a sale since I have been in the UK and I cannot find my site in a google search. Any ideas would be helpful! I am listed on yell though. Also, would I benefit from a name change? Hmmm...confused.

You could always have a business name different to your domain name if that helps and simply redirect the old domain to a new one.

When you do a Google search, yes. Out in the real world most people have no clue what a nappy cake is. Or at least that is what I've noticed where I've been so far. They are extremely popular in Canada and we call them Diaper cakes. What else would you call them? Perhaps just Baby Shower Cakes? But then people would get confused with real cakes that you eat, would they not?

Nappy cakes is not a particularly familiar term over in the UK. Ultimately, your products are baby gifts, so is probably worth trying to incorporate this in somehow.

My wife and I recently had a baby and we received a wonderful gift from a friend which were a set of baby clothes made in to the shape of flowers. This wasn't something we had ever seen before and we were very impressed by it as a present. Maybe if you have a look at this similar type of site to yours (i.e. baby clothes made in to something else which looks impressive, in their case flowers, in your case, cakes) it will give you some hints:

Firstly...what is a nappy cake? And is it a term that people in the UK would unferstand know about?

I have to be honest, I have no idea what you are selling or your industry but make sure that people understand what you are selling firstly. If they don't, you might need to change your business name to accomodate this.

Secondly, start doing some SEO work for your chosen keywords and start gettiung your store up the rankings as this will increase your traffic and hopefully sales.

If you like writing you can also do article marketing. You basically write articles in relation to your niche, submit to article directories and then you can drive traffic to your website via your article(s). Even if you do not like writing, you can get article writers to write for you based on your keywords.

i don't know what it is about the phrase nappy cake/baby cake, it just doesn't feel right to me, i get this image of a baby in a nappy sitting in the middle of a giant cream cake! (probably says more about me than the phrase though :redface.

Hi there I'm a woman with a baby - and never heard if the term nappy cakes and believe me I read all the magazines, publications etc etc

I agree with some of the other posts re looking for what people search for - like baby gifts, new baby gifts etc - common sense says that this is what people would look for if they wanted to buy a gift for someone who had just had a baby - check out the search terms on the adwords tool.

Also try and get the domain name as again mentioned above to include something that is related to baby gifts - if not create a new name (baby or gift related) and point to website

I think the problem is that firstly, as other posters have pointed out, here in the UK we're not familiar with the term 'nappy cake'

But more importantly for us Brits 'nappy' conjoures up an image of something potentially unpleasant & dirty. Cake/gift is something pleasant - so the two terms clash with one anokther - if you see what I mean?

Can you bear to drop the word 'nappy'?

Mum with a baby (well he was a baby 2 years ago!) here.

I have heard of nappy cakes, but that's only since I've become part of the mumpreneur community (because EVERYONE is setting up an online store selling/dropshipping nappy cakes - it's the latest thing). I hadn't heard of nappy cakes in real-life, which as said previously, raises the question of what traffic you'd get if you used that as a keyword. Only trouble is, I guess any keywords centering around 'new baby gifts' would be horrendously competitive....

Ive never heard of a nappy cake, in general over here in the UK we dont have baby showers either -in fact many people wouldnt really know what a baby shower is (other than a bathing accessory) let alone a nappy cake???

Thankfully we dont have the awful word diaper over here either.

They are known here in the UK, and if outback Cumbria has parties with people selling them, then they sure have hit the big cities

Cannot remember what programme (a soap maybe) but one of these was given as a present to the Mum to be.

Mum to a 2 year old and 1 year old and i like the idea - i also like baby baskets and would consider buying them as a gift for expectant mothers.

My advice would be:

-Actually pay for the website - as its free and has the make free website weeby logo it looks abit cheap - i hate the pink background - can you make it white and baby colours maybe make it bright - having a baby is a happy time - yellows and blues and baby pink spring type colours.
-Check out google keyword tool and see what people are searching for with regards to baby gift baskets, nappy cakes etc within the UK.
-Add some new articles and blog posts to your blog and spin and distribute to articles websites including the keywords from above
-Some of the pcitures are on black backgrounds and it makes them look dull
-If you make the baskets yourself and have an interesting story maybe you could write a free press release or send a few free baskets to your local hospital in exchange for free press/business cards
-On the custom baskets page maybe add a list of what people can include then people can choose what they want.
-Make free delivery visible as people over here like free delivery
-Do you make them yourself? Could you expand and use gift baskets and baths etc. As there is a stall in the centre of our shopping centre selling all this stuff - they use baths and everything to create them
-Create a facebook page and invite your friends, keep posting nice homemade gift baskets or nappy cake pictures - its the kind of thing people will like on facebook and you can also put special offers on facebook for people.

Also the name doesnt sound like something we would hear over here - maybe change it to amazingnappycakes which sounds great!

As for paying for my site, Gemma, I am still working on that as when I got to the UK last June my site was hacked and I am still trying to work out the bugs with regards to that. So this is an interim solution until I find an inexpensive hosting provider that has everything I need in a hosting package. :redface:

How about organising some parties for Mums to be, and their friends, hopefully sales will be forthcoming, and also help spread the word.

Get mentioned on all the Mums and Mums to be sites.

Anyone with doubts about these, should really research them, they are beautiful, a lot of skill goes into creating them. True, the name could be better, but what else do you call a nappy that has been crafted to look like a cake, bit defeating the object if you call it something else.

No, but if you put baby gifts nappy, they come up - and there are sites when you just put baby gift, they appear - this one for instance, top of Google page 1!

With a good site, and good SEO, people will find you, most people searching on 'baby gifts' will be looking right across the board, so as long as you get a good high ranking, you will be up there.

I'm a woman with a child and can honestly say after hours or research and reading magazines - nappy cakes never came up once.

I agree with everyone else with me as a perspective customer I would use the term baby shower gifts, baby gifts, new baby gifts wherever you can in a domain and then point to your site.

Also hooking up with people like Bounty for new mum's etc may get you some business once the name is good as you can do marketing with them and get lists from them (at a price) to send %off vouchers to users

I think you have a bit of work to do really. I thought Nappycakes was a euphemism for babypoo, and your 'Spunky Puppy' product has overtones of what happened 9 months before the baby arrived.

Nice idea, everyone wants to get something different for a newborn - my son is 14 days old but if I'd known about nappy cakes 2 weeks ago I'd have had one waiting for his mum when i brought them home! So really I've been looking through websites. Most of them have nothing to do with the business name. It's all Keywords and keyword placement. I could change that in a heartbeat. Tender Tushies (my domain name now) I could leave, and reconfigure the keywords... have it forward with really good keywords and make a duplicate site with a catchy name (UK focussed) and double up with the keywords? Am I confusing anyone other than myself?? LOL.

So I have been talking to some "professionals" regarding this and I basically was told to shorten my name, which I did, make it UK - which I also did, and now....the last thing was keywords. I updated those in every single page. I also redesigned a free theme from Weebly. That was interesting and very fun! I will be going with the PRO site as soon as possible but for now....hopefully what I've done will work. I am not putting up any pictures with black backgrounds as I am not able to make those products anyways. I will be redesigning more nappy cakes as I can afford to and adding them to the site.
