New Google SEO Secret?

I asked last week if anyone knew why my Google SEO rankings differed from day to day and from computer to computer and I have noticed a couple of other recent threads querying 'appearing' and 'disappearing' listings etc.

I have now noticed that our position on Google for 'property investment' on our site highgrowthpropertyinvestment changed (for a few consecutive days) on the dot of 4pm from mid page 2 to bottom page 1.

The term 'investment property' has also been swinging daily between page 1 and 2.

My theory? First it is not because I have my Google account open.

I believe that Google are testing their new ranking criteria of click thru rate on SEO by alternating site position in exactly the same way they do on PPC. If this is the case I would imagine (again a theory) that they would not alternate the very top page 1 positions but confine their testing to lower page 1 and page 2/3 listings.

Is this the latest Google secret?

Testing is no secret, Google do it all the time, but it is always limited to one datacentre before being let loose on the main network.
There could be another explanation, in that at 4pm google switch dat cantre sharing and that is why you are getting a different position?

doest posting your keywords on a highly ranked board such as this drop your main sites position if the board is strong enough, i.e. stacounter etc?

Google could be using Bounce Rates to decide whether your website is useful to visitors or not. Read this article on how Google uses this technique to decide future SEO rankings of your business website.

http://www.seohawk.com/blog/google-bounce-rate-and-seo-rankings/

I am sure it will be an eye-opener for you

IMO conspiracy theory.

If bounce rate is a ranking factor then why is it that of two sites I manage in the same niche that are ranked on the same page - the one with the higher bounce rate ranks 3 places higher in the serps?

EDIT: Another reason I'm sceptical - what if you don't have analytics? What if you remove analytics? Google can't determine your bounce rate if it's not installed.

Storm in a teacup IMO

Are we talking about users who go to Google, type in a search string, click on a result to go to the site, then click their back button?

Are you taking the mickey? Read my intro please.

Your sig says you do SEO training and you don't know what the bounce rate metric is? Pretty appaling I'd say.

Bounce rate is a metric that is determined in Google's analytics application.

If you don't have analytics installed then there is no way on earth Google can determine your bounce rate.

What Tin is saying, is that you are going from a Google search page, to a result. Therefore, it can work out how long it takes from going to that result, to clicking back and ending up at the search results page again. No doubt if people are using Chrome they might even be leaking all sorts of metrics about browsing :| not 100% on that though.

Cheers

Ahhh, you seem to misunderstand my point. I wasn't asking about bounce rates because I don't understand them, Oh No, as I fully understand them, I was simply requiring clarification as to the context you were meaning ie; if you meant that if I open my browser now and go directly to a site (other than Google) and bounce right across to another site, would Google know about this. Of course it wouldn't (unless you have it's toolbar installed). Or, whether you were meaning a user went to Google and used Google's engine to find a result, clicked on the link and then bounced right back. There were two ways in which your comment could be construed and before I replied, I was just wanting to know which way you meant it.

Pretty appaling I'd say.

Word of warning! Develop a habit of publicly casting defamatory comments about my skills or service might land you in hot legal soup!

Given that you've just joined UKBF may I suggest that you spend a few moments...

1] Getting a feel for the depth and skills of members on this forum before you start making assumptions, and...

2] Tone down your continual negative comments regarding others ability in the field of SEO and marketing. It doesn't look good and you might find that the heavy weight players on this forum might not appreciate your words.

OK if they're measuring bounce rates from users without analytics installed then

"Where is the data on collection points? What percentage of sites use Google Analytics? How many ToolBars are there? The simplest problem is that using such a metric as a serious signal means there has to be large enough data sets - which there isn't

And what of Spam? Do you really think it is a simple as 'hey let's use this signal' - bouce rates and behavioral in general make for noisy signals that are problematic from a spam management perspective.

And what of bookmarks? Application focus? These are tools that 'could' (in concert with other approaches and signals) make behavioral more viable, but even those methods are still a work in progress and this all bloats the processing requirements and ultimately cost. "

To use Bounce rate as a ranking factor, is extremely close to using adsense CTR and eCPM to determine organic SERP . Google can't really go there, because if they started ranking based upon these factors, the Govt. would raise the monopoly issue.

I see lots of different impressions about talking of SEO secrets here. That's good, but last time I checked the regional results of some popular keywords, all I got was spammy content pages and to say the least, insult my intellect as a person.

Google UK results, searching for website optimization in the top ten.
Company-X Search Engine Optimization (optimisation)(seo) solutions are committed to using functional business enhancing Website Design that not only delivers your message but also achieves high visibility on the World Wide Webs' leading search engines via our comprehensive Internet Marketing services.
Talking about the wrong stuff! I wonder what secrets and structural analysis, literature patents and other smokes and mirrors they are talking about. Its ludicrous. And 90% percent of the results follow a similar pattern. I have seen far better content generators that at least have meaning in the same sentence.

If the regional search mechanisms Google has, cannot filter the page content properly, it would be best to bring up the international results that are a bit more sensible.

Legal threats?

I'll pm you the address of our solicitors shall I?

I think you both should calm down.

If anything you have learned something.0
An I don't feel that tins question was wrong.

The analytic can be collated in different ways now.
If you didn't know this you could thank Tin for making you aware of it.

But hey this is only a thought:D

if you want to know if bounce rate is a ranking factor then try an experiment that i have been doing.
do a local search and click on a map at the top
then click back button
got to one further down the list enter it then close the window
watch as they swap positions after a time.
may take a few day but it does happen.

my conclusion is that google does look at bounce rate when ranking

Have you thought of doing one of Tin's training courses.?

might help.

anything that goes through Googles little box you can be sure google knows about.
