Hi guys

As part of my new business we are creating a Magazine which will have useful info for our customers as well as special offers etc and also we would be selling advertising space within the magazine its self.

We will be looking at printing about 100-200 copies a month for the first 2-3 months then increase to 500 copies a month from month 4-6 then after 6 months it will be about 1000-2000 copies a month.

We need someone not only do the printing but also to do the lay out designs etc, any advice or pointers would be most welcomed we really want a cost effective place to do this as we are only starting so our budget is not big.

On average it will be about 30-40 pages maximum as for the paper it can either be the same style paper as the TNT magazine you get on the London Underground or like a normal magazine you get at WHSmith, we could start with the TNT type paper and then eventually as the numbers go up we will revert to the other type papers if this makes any sence at all?

Anyhow many thanks in advanced and I look forwards to your heads-up and help.

LD @ your service ;)

As these are relatively small print runs you can expect these magazines to be pretty expensive to print.

If you are planning on selling these I can say with a great deal of certainty that you would have to sell each unit for a price lower than the cost of producing it, effectively making a loss. The only real way to make a profit or at least cover your costs will be the advertising that you mentioned. Naturally this same policy would apply if you were giving away the magazine for free.

If you think about some of the newspapers out there. The majority of them cost more to print and distribute than they sell for. All of the revenue comes from advertising.

I would get in touch with printers local to you in the first instance and shop around.

*EDIT*: I should also add that you will need a printer that can manage digital print processes (most can these days) as you it would be prohibitively expensive for litho printing a 50 page magazine with litho plates.

Hello LD,

Can you PM a detailed description of the design / typesetting work involved - we'll then work up an accurate quotation.

Examples of some of the books and magazines we produce are located here:
Book and magazine printing.

We produce digital and offset in-house so are flexible with volumes.

As usual LicensedToTrade is spot on with info - worth considering those comments also.

If you'd like us to produce great, if you'd like advice great.

Best wishes

Peter
