Hi guys

I have a company called Two Thirds Media, and I'm in the process of re branding it. I am basically a photography and video agency.

My designer feels quite strongly that I should drop the word "Media" from the designs but I can't help but feel the media part of my name is my brand name, domain name etc - so it should be in the logo?

Anyone else agree with him? I do have to agree with the designer that the logo designs without media are much better, but still unsure..?

What would you do?

Is the designers idea that by having something generic it can be used for different sections?

ie
Two Thirds Media, Two Thirds Photography, Two Thirds Video

No, basically I think from a business standpoint I should have my logo Two Thirds Media as people will see it and instantly know what to search etc.

But he prefers the logo just saying Two Thirds as it looks better not being so long.

Or just don't use a logo. They are very overated and nobody really cares about your logo except you.

Just put the words Two Thirds Media in the header and a tagline underneath. You can use a pretty font and some nice colours if you want but it makes very little difference to anything.

I would challenge the designer, if your brief is to come up with a logo to go with the brand you are presenting, why are they saying change the brand????

Unless you've got the advertising budget that goes with being a company like Heinz and many, many decades to impose that logo on the consciousness of the public, it is highly unlikely that anyone will ever recognise or remember your logo in any case. Yes I've got a logo (my second) , the first was professionally designed, it looked great, I never found anyone who remembered or recognised it! Like you I've come under pressure to change things I didn't want changed because it suited the logo design and I've later regretted giving into it. For most people the word 'Media' is going to carry much more meaning than any design no matter how good.

The important thing with a logo is to make sure that the design will fit in the various formats in which it will be used and those who design logos do not always take such issues into account. It may look great on your letterhead but will it fit as a profile picture on Facebook & Twitter for example if you use those.

What is your target market? Are you wanting to attract Joe Public to use your service or are you wanting media insiders to use your service. If you are wanting media insiders to use your service then you will need to make it clear that you are an agency and do not produce media. If it is Joe Public that you want to target, then you have to make it clear that your business deals with video and photography and that you are an agency.

Have you thought of just going with "Two Thirds" as suggested by the designer and then use a tag line of something like "The Video and Photography Agency" To me, that will work with both Joe Public and the media insiders alike.

OK.....

What's the hexagonal thing supposed to represent? Why is is so big? How will it work as a favicon? Is any one going to notice the minuscule thickness change when it's 30px high on a phone?

Bin the orange, bin the icon thing and just use the words. In plain text so it's indexable

You might be re-branding but this is not an improvement on your current logo. If you have to explain the significance of the icon to people, it's not doing you any favours. Keep it simple.
