local number to mobile ?

Hi all - first post so probably going to bore you all with naive questions for a while !

I am starting up a mobile business - using home as my office.
It is going to be beneficial for me to have a locally coded landline number for use on my vehicle, but one which diverts to my mobile phone - as I am hoping to be out working all day !

BT wants around £150 to give me a new business line at home, plus extra to divert calls to a mobile number.

I was looking at O2's Mobile Landline service - but this had collapsed recently and now cant be got at all.

What other options are there (if any) to have a proper local number on my van that rings straight through to my mobile phone ?

I need something reliable as I will be on call 24 hours a day.

I dont want to use my home phone as I wish to keep all of the business things entirely seperate from the home setup.

VOIP - I've recently signed up with www.voipfone.co.uk

I have 1 line and it rings my desk handset and mobile at the same time. 12p per min IIRC divert charge.

BT are having a laugh. Talk about stuck in the middle ages.

That is easy We do Internet phone with your local STD code for £50 purchase and then the calls are the same price as a landline. 1.9p or .9p deoending on the time of day. Or you could have a new line installed for £99 plus VAT and go for our brod call service which is £25 per month line rental and broadband. Anyway do pm me and I can send you a proposal if you would like

Internet phone would not be any use to me - we only got broadband service from our local exchange 2 years ago and we only get 512kb MAX on a good day with a following wind !

No future prospect of it being upgraded as a rural small exchange.

Hi Gerry,

At this point in time it does look as though having a line installed and forwarded is the way to go, it doesn't have to be forever and the VoIP option will be worth revisiting at some point.

I'm currently upgrading the telecoms infrastructure for a local business in the same sector as you, Locksmith, Security, Alarms etc so i'm sure we've covered a similar set up, mobile workers, out of hours calls etc.

I don't think you actually need to have the calls delivered to your voipfone - Just set a permanent divert to your mobile.

I wouldn't get another line installed.

Have you considered using a telephone answering service? Some of them will give you a local area number and will take calls for you and can transfer them to your mobile if necessary.

Quite a few of my start-up clients have used something like this.

Hi Gerry, If you do decide to put a new line in do pm me. Our line rental is economical as well as the call costs, and the cost to instal is cheaper than BT. No contract so you can leave us if not completely satisfied, or want to move to VOIP.

if its a direct divert to mobile then you could get away with having 56k dialup. no calls will ever be routed over your internet connection. you could get a tesco internet phone with a 01 or 02 local number and divert it to your mobile for 10p a minute. this is by far the cheapest option.

What happens when i go on holiday for 3 weeks - is there an option to have callers to my voip number > mobile be given a message to say I am away until such and such a time ?

Of course. The messages left are converted to MP3 files and emailed to you or you can dial in and get them or go online and listen to them.

Bt also do a package with their own mobile.Its set a fee if you dont use the mobile outside of the call allowance as the calls divert to the mobile are free.
Depends if you are expecting lots of calls or not.I pay £42 per month but i can get a lot of enquiries and its permanently diverted to the mobile.

In reality if you are starting out expect a zillion telesales calls asking you to advertise in dodgy non existent magazines etc.The scouse accent normally gives it away as most seem to be based up that way( the southern scammers probably target northern business :) ).

As a startup look for the cheapest way of doing it as some many startups out there at present the work is spread very thinly unless well established with network contacts.

Thanks Lockie - I dont think I am going to stump up for a proper business landline just yet, as you say - if its cheap then go that route until established.

Might have to try out this voip thing - all Greek to me at present so will have to look into it further !

Thats messages left for me surely - I meant how do I set about leaving a message to say I am unavailable that callers will hear as soon as they call my number ?

I am possibly missing something obvious as I have never used voip or any internet phone or voicemail or chatted online . . . :)

You dial 1571 from a VoIP phone or you dial the PSTN access number from an ordinary phone, press 0 and follow the instructions for creating your 'I'm not here' message.

If you have the number diverted to your mobile your caller will be sent directly there, so for your caller to get your Voipfone message you just need to knock off the divert and your caller goes straight to voicemail.

We have two suppliers. We signed up to ereceptionist.co.uk. You get a months free trial and local number of your choice. You can also get a free professional recording. If you want to test ours give us a Message and I will forward you the number to ring.

That costs us I think £19.95 per month with extra for call forwarding.

We also use City Numbers Ltd who charge about £15 to set up an account, then £3 a month fee plus extra charges.
