I've got a telephone interview in an hour..

Any tips on the nerves I always have to deal with on these? or insider tips from an interviewer? its for a new IT contract..

I stumble a bit on the pauses, I always try and fill them which probably results in waffle.

listen as well as talk; if you are doing all the talking you are not listening to me and what I want - Im the buyer after all.

Take 6 deep breaths before the call like this: breath in through the nose and out through the mouth, and as you inhale expand your stomach, and as you exhale relax it. Do this slowly and deeply, anytime when you feel under stress or at the point of starting to feel stressful. It should do the trick to calm your nervous system. (well it works for me!)

I find it very hard in telephone interviews due to not having any eye contact. One thing I can say is that believe it or not a smile carries over the telephone so if you smile it will help the interviewer to warm to you! Good Luck!

Thats a tricky question. It probably depends on how high up the employment ladder you are and whether confidence is a prerequisite for the job.
For instance if its just the first rung on the ladder they would probably expect you to be nervous but if you are higher up confidence is what they are looking for.
I would probably say instead of thinking about being nervous just try to relax, if it happens so what! You are only human?

I would advise against it....sometimes people will presume that you have already identified a personal weakness.

Its junior project management......I think you're right, just see how it goes, its just the not being able to see the person, I'm fine face to face

Don't say that you are nervous. If you feel that you have to say something to explain why your nerves are playing up, you can just explain that its the first time you have experienced a telephone interview. Sounds normal enough.

I would suggest lots of wine to calm you nerves hehe...(not solicited advise and shall not be held responsible for the outcome hehe )

Its a contract, I've been doing it for five years and after just reading through my experience I should breeze through this; its just articulating it without sounding like a bloody idiot!

At first it was because I was nervous, but then remembered what Indizine said and did that and then got annoyed with myself because I knew that I could easily do it.

So pleased, because now I can carry on planning my boutique and easily be able to save the money I'm aiming for whilst I work......;-)

Hi Maria,

If you are confident face to face then try and believe that you are actually face to face and not on the phone.
Maybe look at a photo whilst you speak or pitch to your dog or a cat if you have one.

Thanks Nick, I got offered the contract in the end! Pitching to the cat would have made things worse, he rarely passes the time of day with me......unless I've just opened a tin of tuna ;-)
