My BB torch with the sliding keyboard and touch screen died today ,so I had to get out one of the old ones and I have forgotten how good and easy to use it is .
I have come to the conclusion that I dont like the new BBs
Am I the only one ?

I've not really used the Torch, although I gave the Bold 9900 (Bold Touch) a go and it's pretty nice, although the screen is a little small for touch input, but then its form factor is basically the same as the original Bold, and you can use the trackpad if you prefer.

I really like the original Bold, which I have (now as a spare phone). Although you could fairly consider them dated, the design was very reliable and easy to use. The keypad and trackpad combination gives you a much surer control than any touch interface I think.

I think part of the problem with the new Blackberrys is that the touch interface implementation isn't as good as competitors. When Blackberry OS 10 (QNX) comes out though that should be remedied. Blackberry really aren't doing too well, but the new OS 10 devices should hopefully change that.

And yeah, if market share and sales are anything to go by you're not the only one.

    We'll see!

Not sure about your phone problem but I've fortunately never had any problems with my Blackberry(s). The Torch isn't a great phone - I used mine for circa 4 months before moving back to a Bold.

I think the hardware is still good - best keyboards, best camera's, best battery life of any smartphone. We know that BB OS is way behind iOS and Android - that's where RIM have their work cut out for sure.

Dont like the new ones. Half keyboard half touch is not really a good way of being intuative. I prefered them non touch and simple email machines. Feature creep and trying to be all things to everyone has made them
    not good phones.
    not good for apps
    fiddely for email.

What about Battery life? I've just checked out review on Blackberry and various other smartphones and people are saying you need to keep them on charge all day because they're out of juice in a couple of hours if you're texting/using apps a lot?

My naff Samsung goes 4/5 days without a recharge.

I can get about 2 days out of my phone using it a fair bit.
If you do maybe 5-10 calls a day then you can probably get 3 days out of it.

For heavy app use then you would need to charge it daily i reckon. But im never away from a plug socket or a car charger for more than 48 hours....or my laptop which i can plug it into to charge.

I have one of the new Bolds for my work email and, while I like being able to touch over using the awful touch-sensitive pad / button, the screen is still too small to be of much use. I find it either gets cluttered too quickly or, ironically, if I disable the messier notifications, it's devoid of any useful information. There's no middle ground.

As a phone / email device it still does the job brilliantly but it's certainly not my go-to device for anything except keeping up when out of the office.

I have recently 'upgraded' from my old Curve 8900 to a Curve 9360.

Still a very good phone but it has the latest OS on it - and one really annoying backwards step in my opinion:

My old BB used to assume you were entering a phone number from the home screen so you got a large phone number appearing as you typed.

With the new OS on my new BB from the home screen it assumes you are searching text so when entering you get a small text string (ie. gobbledygook) when entering a phone number, with an even smaller phone number almost too small to read appearing underneath that.

Can't see a way of getting it to default to showing a number from the home screen so you can see what you are entering. Very annoying.

I have a Curve 8900 at present and have just been offered a Curve 9360 free from o2. It has OS7 on it and some other features I like so I will probably accept the offer.

I know BB battery life is known for being poor so recently installed the battery saver app thinking it would simply reduce the usage but instead it just prompts you to close things, reduce backlight etc to save on battery. I do prefer having the qwerty keypad which is why I chose to stick with BB rather than change to iphone, HTC, Samsung etc

I think I read that you can turn off the auto search function so perhaps this would prevent it typing out the letters from the corresponding number press?

well i will disagree with you, new BB phones are good with speed and functionality, the interface is almost the same, in-case of BB torch (slide) its a little annoying ... but new BB's ROCK :) check the new BB-BOLD !!

Thanks for trying to help Simon,

Unfortunately if you turn off 'universal search' in blackberry OS7 you cannot dial/enter anything from the homescreen so this doesn't fix the problem. I want a big telephone number to appear as I dial from the homescreen, like OS6 used to do !

I want to use my Blackberry as a phone and email machine primarily, not a multimedia/social networking/games machine !

Oh well. Worth a shot. Might be worth posting on the Crackberry forum for a possible solution if you haven't already tried there?
