Hello everyone,

I hope you're all having a great Friday!

I have a burning question that I am hoping can be answered by some of you SEO specialists/ experts... Would it be a good idea to set up specific categories for a popular search term?

For example, if "white wall clocks" was a popular search term, would it be a good idea to set up a category specifically for this Search Term. Have the Tittle and H1 tag with "White Wall Clocks" in and then write a good page description about this and then put all of our white wall clocks in this category?

Even if this page isn't shown on the website, surely it would attract traffic from Google etc.?

Thanks,

If the page isn't shown on the website why do you think you'd get Google traffic?

As long as the category is enabled it can still show in the Google search results. It will still be on our website, it's just wont be linked from the main menu.

Ok, now you've made sense. Not linking to it from your main menu will make it a bit harder to rank for it's keywords and ranking well for keywords means you need to 'tick' every possible box within your site in order to help push rankings along.
Thank you.

Better to have a category of clock, and then within that have a product of white wall. That way the 'clocks' category keeps absorbing link juice, whether you add/remove products. So you end up with URL like www.domain/clocks/white-wall . Added bonus is that anyone landing on that URL can see you have a clocks section so may be tempted to visit www.domain/clocks/ to see what else you offer.

Its not only H1 tags that you should include but also the length of article on homepage, H2,H3 tags and social sharing buttons on homepage. These factors help product pages get boost in rankings.

I don't think google will notice that "/category/watches/kindofwatch/product" structure, I still find e-commerce platforms with links like "index.php?...page564" in first page search results. Its all about authority, this is what you have to do.
And, of course, a nice and simple category navigation with SSL on login page.

...and social sharing buttons on homepage. These factors help product pages get boost in rankings.
How?

Linking out to FB won’t make the slightest difference to anything.

Be careful when doing this and ensure the URL's stay the same.

A mistake many make is that they have a product "Zango 64" which is a white alarm clock.

The page for this could be /zango-64-white-alarm-clock/

What you then don't want to do is have the URL as;
domain.com/clocks/white-clocks/zango-64-white-alarm-clock/

The end product page should be domain.com/zango-64-white-alarm-clock/

If the end product page is /zango-64-white-alarm-clock/ and you have it as domain.com/clocks/white-clocks/zango-64-white-alarm-clock/ your system could also have it in;

domain.com/clocks/zango-64-white-alarm-clock/
domain.com/clocks/alarm-clocks/zango-64-white-alarm-clock/
domain.com/clocks/alarm-clocks/white-clocks/zango-64-white-alarm-clock/
domain.com/white-clocks/zango-64-white-alarm-clock/
domain.com/alarm-clocks/zango-64-white-alarm-clock/
etc., etc.

Hi @Interiorsdan

I'm a bit late to the party here but thought I would add my two-penneth just for good measure.

Adding extra landing pages to a site is certainly not a problem provided it adds value to the visitor. Google wants to see sites with pages that demonstrate high quality content not 100+ pages with 200-500 words of waffly, thin content.

If you are going to create landing pages then make them the most comprehensive pages possible with all the right meta tags.

You would get the most SEO juice linking from the pages higher up in the hierarchy (i.e the homepage) but you can make them rank well with internal cross-linking from your category pages and blog pages.

After all, how do you think long-tail search terms rank? They are not linked to from the homepage. They ae usually blog pages that have been linked to internal and from external sources.

Your best bet might be to create a blog feature called the '50 best white wall clocks for xxxxx', target it around a long-tail term keyword phrase and then include your products within it, along with some external products for unbiased good measure. You can then promote it across social channels and home/office improve blogs to drive traffic to it.

I know this is just an example but I can see there is search volume for:
  • white wall clocks for the bedroom
  • white wall clocks for the kitchen
  • white wall clocks for the bathroom
If you create a great landing page then you can use it for your Adwords and Facebook marketing campaigns.

Also make sure you hard-direct your on-site search queries for 'white clock' related terms to that page too. If you've got a landing page in place then you should maximise for internal searches it rather than just serve up a page of search results that usually look pretty naff.

Hope that helps.

Matt

If the search term "white wall clocks" is popular, specific category is recommended for the new landing page/s. I think this will add some idea for your URL structure:
domain.com/kitchen/clocks/whitewallclocks/
domain.com/bedroom/clocks/whitewallclocks/
domain.com/bathroom/clocks/whitewallclocks/

If people searches “white wall clocks” more often then it would be good idea to create an page with proper title & description based on “white wall clocks” and put all types of white wall clocks on that page along with the price so that when people visit this page through google organic or paid advertisement then they can see all types of white wall clock products and they can easily buy it. According to the user views and Google ranking the “white wall clocks” page should have proper H1 tag and a bit of products description based on white wall clocks. All these process would help you getting the conversions as well as products ranking in Search engine.
