How do I find out the best keywords to buy and how much they cost?

Use the Google keyword tool or planner as it's now called. However, use it cautiously.... Google aren't going to give you a bunch of amazing keywords that naturally convert, so what I suggest you do is start off with a few ideas to begin with and use either phrase or broad match modifier as a keyword match, after a few days, run a search term report or check the keyword details tab and it will show you what other alternative keywords people are actually using, rather than taking Google's word for it.

Straight from the horses mouth so to speak :)

Thanks for that, very helpful
( Wonder why most posters can't be as helpful?)

I'd recommend you read 'Adwords for Dummies'. Although it's a bit out of date (Adwords books are always out of date - even when they're first published), the money it'll save you will be well worth the price of the book.

(And I think there's a free voucher in it that's around the price of the book - so it's basically free.)

In that case I suggest you dont use PPC :)

Sorry. disagree.

I'm a dummy and it works well for us. What I would say though is that you do need to brush up on the basics, and start small. Just see what happens.

Pay particular attention to the 'negative keywords' - these are words which you don't want triggering your ad but may still be related to your business.

As an example, among our negative keywords in our roofing campaign we have 'how to'.

This is because some people will type in 'how to build a fibreglass flat roof' and we don't want those sorts on our website

And 'shop' is another one. We aren't a shop.

Good luck :)

Take the advice above - also, start out with Exact Match only keywords otherwise you could get yourself into a bit of a mess if you don't know what you're doing. Remember to set your daily campaign budget to something you can afford as well.

Lastly, think about what your customers would use when they're searching - not what you want them to search on. I.e. had a client who wanted to sponsor the keyword 'integrity' as they wanted to align their bank to it... which totally doesn't work for PPC!!
