How not to design a website

It was around 20 secs here, but I do have a fast connection.

Definitely fails the 8 second test, and a very poor advert for a web design company who should know better.

I got it in 15 seconds in Firefox, bit boring waiting, but not a bad site once you get there. Methinks someone is trying to be too clever.

Flash websites don't work as a website either, they work as a web embeded multimedia application but not as website.

Some people need to learn that flash is for making mutlimedia applications on the web such as games and HTML is for websites.

Flash sucks,

I honestly do hate it.

Oh and for those who are interested my internet here runs around 4mb/s and in firefox took around 30 secs to load.

Yea about 30 seconds here too - I'm left wondering what was taking so much time to load, there isn't really anything out of the ordinary... fail!

lol, i was expecting big things with that wait - not particularly amazing...

About 20 seconds for me - but what was there that justified the load time anyhow ?

I second Ryan's comment. It's only good for creating addictive little mini-games that are played by bored office monkeys. *ahem*

Its the age old issue of graphic designers thinking they can design websites... just cause im a web designer doesn't mean im an interior designer... people should offer services they are good at, not what will generate them more income!

I sent them an email courteously suggesting they might like to consider the end user.

I think they might have had a lot of other people over the weekend suggesting they do something too:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

[email protected]

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 Mailbox quota exceeded (state 14).

Poor flash coding...

You need to load the initial content...

Then when someone click a link then load the additional content...

Doing it this way you are looking at about 5 seconds load time per a page (or less with fast connection) which is respectable for a flash site.

I like the idea of the website downloading black page with an advertisement which then sticks out a mile waiting for the flash to load... good for advertisers, poor for the website.

I have to be honest though, there aren't many decent flash sites out there...

it all goes back to the early 2000's when flash was going to be the future, but then accessible laws were bought in the USA covering websites, and then the DPA 2005 it meant things had to change.

I am so glad that more and more people are makign CSS sites now.

This site is getting popular with everyone visiting it lol...

They could have at least made the loading bars more interesting.

Maybe like a windows vista cursor, the logo as a progress bar or maybe typing out a message that grabs peoples interest...

Well, that's like saying "salt sucks" - it depends how you use it. I don't like all singing and dancing flash sites that are like movies, but I do like swishmax. For my own site I've used flash for some of the link buttons and the site loads very quickly. I think in web design, flash is like salt, you should use it to enhance and highlight.

White Rose I am not being funny but do you have any idea how bad flash links are? Web sites are like electrical installations, just because it works it dosn't mean its done right.

..very good noidea. Yes I got rid of a lot of flash from my blog as it was slowing it down so much.

White Rose I am not being funny

I'm sure you're not, I appreciate any advice, Joy Division.

but do you have any idea how bad flash links are? Web sites are like electrical installations, just because it works it dosn't mean its done right.

They're internal hyperlinks. I've read that Google can't register outgoing flash links so once the book goes on sale and there is a link to Amazon I was planning to use a plain html link for that - the jury is still out on whether I use a flash link for that as well, I haven't got that far yet. It's only the links between site pages that are flash movies. All outgoing links are plain html. Am I still being naughty? Anyway, I'm becoming a fully paid up member of UKBF soon and will be putting the site up in the private section for everyone to comment on, although tbh I am so exhausted with the amount of work I've already put into it, that as long as it functions for now that is going to have to do. SEO is not that important to me atm as there is only one book of that title and even before publication the title is leading to my blog in the top five of Google, and my name is number one on Google, natch. So people can find the book. Job's a good 'un.

Besides, my editor has nearly finished editing the book and is ready to hand it back to me, so now I have to focus on tying up the final editing and getting the book out there. I can't get too anal about site perfection, I simply don't have the resources, this being an infant company not on its feet yet. I'll have time to go back and tweak the site once the book is on sale and I've spent some time configuring all the Amazon stuff, but at the moment I'm working to a strict daily schedule, it's the only way this ridiculously ambitious enterprise is going to get done and already I'm wary of burn out.

OT alert:

By the way are you a Joy Division fan? I was on that scene in Manchester, yanno. Didn't know them but the singer from ACR was my paramour for a while. Have you seen my interview with Kevin Cummins, whose book of Joy Division shots, Juvenes, was published last year by To Hell With Publishing? The interview is here in case you're interested. I think there are still some limited editions of Juvenes available from To Hell directly, here. It's pricey at two hundred quid a pop, but well worth buying as it's a numbered collector's item. Just had a look for you, there's only thirty remaining.

Actually, even though people have reservations of doing it, Googlebot can actually follow most links in swf flash files without problems. You can always use <noscript></noscript> tags as well...

Yes your right - flash is like salt.

I mean, dont we get told everyday we should use less salt - infact we should pretty much avoid it all together.

But then again im not really a salt fan either, so i could live without both.

You need salt to stay alive actually.

"..too little salt in the diet can lead to muscle cramps, dizziness, or even an electrolyte disturbance, which can cause severe, even fatal, neurological problems." (Wiki)

I know you don't need Flash to stay alive, but that wasn't the point of a rather good analogy.

Cheers, noidea :) There's a lot of ridiculous snobbery goes on about flash, just like mid-grade climbers banging on about top-roping.

Thanks :)

Quite. It's just a question of taste. If you don't like the food in this restaurant, then go elsewhere.

don't worry there is enough salt hidden into things you'll never go without it!

Why all the flash hating?

Joy as to people missing the "point" of a website. The point of a website is the creators wishes is it not?

http://www.selftitled.ca/ - intuative navigation
http://agencynet.com/ - engaging, professional and a good demonstration of a company that understands interaction and media
http://www.bkdsn.com/bkdesign_studio.html - walk through the studio
http://www.jonathanyuen.com/main.html - how to engage a visitor in a seamless interactive way

to see more > http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/10/30/65-excellent-flash-designs/

What people seem to forget is that to a small business flash sites may not work or you may want to offer it as html as well.

For larger branded business flash is a much better proposition as they can stimulate brand interaction beyond just clicking and reading lots of "seo'd" text.

If your goals are to engage visitors then flash is a serious option if your goal is to drive traffic and sell a couple of widgets then its not the best solution.

Really it is about the suitability of a technology than the technology itself.
It does make me smile though as there is a lot of glass houses and rocks that fly about in these types of discussions......

Flash isnt evil and it isnt rubbish. Its a way to develop engaging media rich websites that can encourage a user to interact with a brand/product/company.

As for design, thats emotive to say the least and like all sites and their respective technologies. Its not HTML/Flash/PHP/CSS that makes a sites design suck.....its the designer.

To be perfectly honest, there are better ways to 'engage' the user than a few crappy, slow loading animations....just my opinion though

P.s

Im not saying any of the websites were bad, infact they were very good. However im not going to crack open flash right now and get designing
