How much have you made through UKBF?

We've done pretty well out of the UKBF. It's not just getting clients, it's building long term relationships and getting referrals which all adds up.

We've also found associates on this forum, had some great advice and hopefully given some good advice too.

I've generated some business here and I joined here originally because a couple of our users were already members and said nice things about our software. At our prices one user more or less is neither here nor there so there's not a lot of point in aggressively touting individuals for business. The PR buzz that happy online forum members generate is a far more important element.

On the other side of the coin 12Pay has spent thousands of pounds with members here. The open forum here gave us a lot of confidence that would have been lacking if we'd just gone and done a random search for those services via google or whatever.

We're *very* happy at the quality of work that other members here have done for us. The return has exceeded our expectations.

I think there's some very knowledgeable people on here and it's definitely a good place to get free advice.....and it seems to be the only place you can get free business advice these days, as every other person would like to charge you a fortune for their 'expert' analysis!

Sometimes you have to take some comments/opinions with a pinch of salt- as there's a few people here who think they're Gods gift - but in reality, know bug*ger all.

The internet is a fantastic place to create leads - and this place is no different. Especially internet based businesses. I would agree with some of the previous comments. I wouldn't come here to make money (even if someone is dreaming of making millions. oh, and that's another issue I have with this place - people comparing the size of their *****', as if it's some sort of competition..get real..please) I did, however, come here with an open mind and a dilemma. For which it's a good place for idea's.

Found my accountant through the forum and this is the best thing that's happened for me. Can't say that I've secured business or suppliers but I know where to go to if I have a specific requirement.

What I would say is that amongst the various ramblings and topics going off on a tangent I do find it useful to see so many other people having similar thoughts/problems/concerns as me and in terms of advice and information this is a pretty useful site. How do you value that ?

Actually there are a few people in here who are clearly quite expert in their fields and whose opinions I generally respect but I agree with you. There is a also a large number of people who know very little promoting themselves as experts and trying to make themselves look good by arguing with people who know even less.

If you stick around you will no doubt see what I mean.

I've not got any business from UKBF, got as far as one or two PMS but I don't like to look like I'm desperately seeking any potential work.

I didn't join the forum primarily to chase work, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested in finding work through the site.

On the other hand my target work is projects in the £10k - 500k range and I think most here are smaller companies not looking for bespoke software on that kind of budget. The fact we're a software company and not a web-design company probably loses a bunch of opportunities too, probably the best chance would be to partner up with a web-design company who don't want to be hacking code themselves.

 

There is a also a large number of people who know very little promoting themselves as experts and trying to make themselves look good by arguing with people who know even less.

Not true I just enjoy arguing.

I never got any business from members here - wrong type of business for that, but we used the services of a couple of members and their fab work helped us secure a large contract

Altogether we spent a few thousand ££'s with members once we'd 'got to know' them through their posts, and were always really pleased.

I suppose I'm one of the lucky ones... unexpectedly my membership fee has been covered by work through the forum... (of course that's no real payment for the time spent on here - but then there are many who'll tell you that's a reflection of my posts!).

As far as I'm concerned it works this way:

For business - there's other stuff
For the best advice, support, and partners - there's UKBF

And TBH - the real life friends that came from it are a COMPLETE bonus!

Nice - and a surprise - to meet up with some real top notch folk! (you know who you are!)

Just as Openmind joked about 'millions, so I continued the joke 'you need to get laid' is a simple term that means 'lighten up' it has no sexual meaning, it is a common figure of speech.

I would like to put down my thoughts as well.

I joined this forums primarily to share my thoughts and connect with small business owners. You see, connection is very important in these times. You never know when you will hit the correct partner.

As for making money here are some of my thoughts. I do make money through forums. However, I do not make them through direct sales letters or open request for business.

When I get requests for marketing services or content writing, it is through the posts I have made in the forum. If someone liked my post or advice, they would come to me for more advice and sometimes they end up as my clients.

I am not talking about the case with UKBF, but with other forums. My advice is to

1. Not think about making money, but deliver exceptional and quality advice
2. Offer help without expecting anything in return
3. Do not try to hard sell by spamming member inbox's
4. Continue contributing and seeking help
5. Never pretend to be something you are not (Hint to the guru's)

I must admit that I am surprised that this was allowed to remain and that no one commented on it at the time. I thought it was right out of order.

Perhaps you could get away with saying that to a close friend in the pub but I think not to someone you don't know on a public forum. Sorry, if it was a joke it was perhaps not in the best possible taste. We need to maintain some sort of standards in here.
