Help with resizing a picture for website

The picture is 2448 Width and Height 3264. Trying on paint to resize it down to go on website a similar size to other pictures.

If anyone can help and tell me what to put in the boxes that would be good. Will check back tomorrow as going offline now.

Might be easier to use any other photo manipulation package you've got other than paint.

You'll want to maintain the ratio, so 2448 x 3264 would be something like 200 x 262, or 500 x 655.

It's not just the physical size ogf the images, you also need to consider the quality. A very high resolution jpeg can produce a large file even though the image dimensions are small. So get the image to the size you want then use one of the many free image editor tools to reduce the image quality, you will probably discover that you can get to quite a low resolution and still retain enough quality for your website visitors.

If you are using Windows XP, then use M$ own 'image resizer'

Very simple to use, and it will keep the aspect ratio for you automatically.

I don't really think that Jane wants to spend hundreds of pounds buying photoshop just to resize a few images when you can do it for free.

If you google for "image resizer" there are loads of options (including the WinXP powertoy).

There is a free trial which means in a months time Jane will have to either buy or find something else.

Anyway, back to the problem, most digital cameras come with some free photo editing software. Have you tried the one that came with your camera Jane?

Unfortunately Paint only resizes by percentages, so if you want the width to be say around 400, you need to know what percentage 400 is of 2448 (the original width), this is done by dividing 400 by 2448 and multiplying by 100:

(400/2446) x 100 = 16%

In Paint's Image Resize screen, enter 16 for both horizontal and vertical resizes:

Resize horizontal: 16
Resize vertical: 16

Because Paint only resizes by percentage, it might not be pixel accurate, it might not be 400, but a few pixels off, so if you want pixel accurate shrinking you will need to use a different tool (maybe one of the free online tools like www.shrinkpictures.com for one-off jobs), or continue using paint, round up (say 17%) and then trim the image which is a few pixels over, using Paint's Image Attributes menu.

If you have the cash adobe fireworks is the way to go. Photoshop, Gimp etc create files that are way too big.
