google Updates

hi,
I have a website and currently pay a company (who design and host my site) to SEO, link build etc and it is costing alot, and although it ha been only 4 months I have not seen much return...anyway I have just had an email from my web people saying that Google are making 'updates' and has quoted me £280 to 'update' my site. They (my web people) say google do this every so often. Does anyone out there know of these updates, what they are? Should i have my site updated??? Are my web people just trying to make more money from me???


any comments from those more informed would be appreciated.

hi i've seen my site bounce around a bit quick recently as google apparently has reshuffled it's algorithm. in all honesty i think whoever is managing your seo should take this into account in the first place - personally i don't feel you should be charged extra. if you have paid for a certain ranking with certain keywords it is their responsibility to maintain those results for you for as long as you originally agreed.

it sounds to me like they're trying to take advantage a bit.

You should definitely NOT be charged extra for this Fiona. Algorithms are changing more than ever right now with Google working on 'Caffeine' and the Bing/Yahoo acquisition. It is an SEOs job to keep up to date with these changes and apply the necessary changes.

May I ask for the URL of your website? I'd be interested in taking a look and seeing what kind of service these guys are offering you. By all means PM me if you are uncomfortable giving the link in this thread.

I agree with the others, you should not be paying extra for google algorithm changes.

However, IMHO the service they are offering is cheap. 6 keywords promoted over a year for £720...(from their website) They must be using a tool or outsourcing somewhere cheap.

Looking at the backlinks, Yahoo reports 108 backlinks, google 6. They seemed focused on one keyword, 'fingerprint jewellery', for link text, for which you are listed at no 5. Other keywords seemed pretty much ignored. If they do this for 5 more keywords, then I think the price is pretty good...

I'm amused at this:

description and keywords are reversed, not terrible, just sloppy or perhaps a new blackhat technique I haven't heard of

The source code is filled with tables and unnecessary tags making the page larger than necessary. A redesign in CSS would reduce page size considerably.

Please feel free to PM me the personal info I ask for i.e. how much are you paying and how much have you already paid?

IMO the SEO is not great onsite at all - the title tags are completely wrong for example every page I click the title tag is "Unique Jewelry - Little Pinkies - London" if I click on a product page i.e Charm and Bracelet in your "Hand and Foot Prints" category I would expect to see something like "Personalised silver fingerprint charm bracelet £120 Free next day delivery" etc

The site is quite slow, the payment process is also slow you do have the option to not create an account, but this may also put visitors off.

Please PM what you are trying to rank for (don't post in the open forum) and I shall have a look at some of your rankings for you.

Edit: By the way you most definately should not have to pay more because Google's algorythm changes - if you are paying for a monthly service this should be included in the price.

I would concur with everything anyone has said in this thread:

1 - I generally don't like to comment to much on other people's SEO because I know that I don't always get to do all I would like on sites due to certain constraints such as budget and the site's flexibility. Not sure how much you have paid for link building but you haven't had much done

2 - Site is very slow

3 - Lots of duplicate content

4 - URLs need some work

5 - You have links that are not within Google's guidelines back to the SEO company: Website Design Services | Search Engine Optimisation Services

6 - Most importantly, I have never heard of anyone having to pay for Google algorithm changes. They change how they rank sites regularly and the only thing that is going to help is more content and more links to your content. There is no reason for an SEO company to charge you for anything other than adding/changing content and then promoting it.
