Accounting spreadsheets form the basis of my business which I mentioned in my profile when I joined UKBusiness forums as a full time member on Tuesday.
Within 24 hours the link to my profile was appearing on Google ranked 12th for accounting spreadsheets.

1. Congratulations to UKBusiness forums, my subscription has paid for itself in 1 day.
2. If you are not a full paid member yet join today it is worth it for the profile introduction page alone. I am delighted.

Please explain further I am sure you have more to comment and I am interested in the influence and effect of posts in the forum.

Also interested in your business spreadsheets direct since I might be in a similiar business - accounting spreadsheets - but would be interested in extending the scope of my product range

Although the forum may compete with long tail terms it will not with major keywords.

If you have a weak site you may find a forum post will knock your own site off the top spot.

One of the major benifits of posting on this forum is the speed the post is indexed.

I moderate on Jill Whalens Highrankings forum (have done since she set it up), it is a major league SEO forum with top quality links pointing to it from sites like CNN, Wall St Journal etc and most of the top SEO sites and blogs.

Anyhow, we have warnings in place to stop people posting client sites etc as within a day or so the foprum posts would push their clients off their position. Such is the power of authority .

As Sireal states, unless you have a heavily themed site that is in a fairly strong position, you can get knocked off the perch. My rugby forum is called scum V The BBC rugby forum is called scrum V (I know the guys there and we have appeared on the show a few times so i am not doing anything underhand).

But look at this http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...enGB242GB244&q=scrum+v+forum&btnG=Search&meta= my forum is top with authority sitelinks for THEIR term. the official BBS site is puched down the 3&4 with me taking position 1&2 plus sitelinks.

The BBC link to my forum ;)

As usual Old Welsh Guy you have my greatest respect.
You do have the knowledge and experience.

I am just considering here that perhaps the initial post which gets a high ranking might be significant in a particular keyword such as this one was in accounting spreadsheets and that subsequent debate on the post dilutes the initial keyword and maybe that is why a phrase such as accounting spreadsheets is not so highly rated as it has been diluted by subsequent posts that do not mention that keyword.

What do you think?

I would have thought that if the website or forum in which the phrase got a ranking then provoked a debate in which the keyword was mentioned in every post then the caching by google of the pages would indicate that this was all about that particular keyword and just as Wikipedia gets high rankings for words because they stuff each keyword with relating keywords it might rank even higher as being an authoritive webpage on that word.

My view is that google is pointed towards rewarding authoritive use of keywords rather than commercial value.

your original post was 12th, then you linked to the original post about accounting spreadsheets from the new post. The new post although it didn't have the phrae in the title was headed by some content that included a link to the original post, AND a link to diyaccounting which is another site about accounting spreadsheets. Because of this, Google has decided that the second post which links OUT to on topic content is a better match from the site. It then dragged up your original post (because it was within 10 places) and slapped it below the second post (this thread).

This is something I have pointed out for years that outbound linking to on topic sites will help you rank.

Google had a simple choice show either
1. a thread that is on an authorative site but that has a single link
2. Show a thread on the same site that references (cites) the original page AND links out to another on topic page. but has far more content on it and content that appears semantically linked.

James,
I knew accounting spreadsheets was on my home page but hadn't realised accounting spreadsheet wasn't. It is now, just added it, thank you.

In fact when I write new website pages and optimise them for meta tags and keywords I often find keywords in the meta tags that are not in the text and immediately fix them. But having checked a number of other peoples websites it is quite common to find their meta tag keywords not being in the text.

You only have the plural on there once too. I'd be looking to AT LEAST get in in an H2 tag and as a link and 2 or 3 times in plain text. (If that's what you are after) or perhaps set up a totally new page specifically targeted to spreadsheets.

This thread could end up at No1 in no time ;)

If you are using the keywords meta at all, then use it properly. it is meant to reflect the page comment.

Spredsheet & spreadsheets, are pretty much the same in the eyes of google anyhow as it uses stemming technology.

e.g. http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...8&rlz=1T4DKUK_enGB242GB244&q=butcher+in+wales the search is for 'buthcer in Wales' note how google has bolded out the stemmed version 'Butchers' plural.

NOTE: cross posted with the above post :)

I found my company was mentioned as the number 1 google link after I introduced myself on here two weeks ago. It's nowhere near the top now though. Goes to show that free PR, mentioning your company and getting it talked about are all worth as much, or more than, paid-for advertising.
