I qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant and Chartered Company Secretary in the early 1970's and followed a career in accountancy for several public companies, initially designing a budgeting system for British Rail, then as Management Accountant and Works Accountant at New World Gas Cookers in Leeds. Following a couple of years in the internal audit function of British Steel I was appointed head of finance and administration at the Refractories Division based in the North East of England.

A number of accounting appointments followed including directorships although from the mid 1980's I have always also ran my own business, usually retailing, and understand many of the issues small business face since I have been there and done it myself.

Considering semi retirement a few years ago, still based In newcastle upon Tyne, I decided to start a new business extending the private accounting work I always seemed to have going in the background. As it happens I found increasingly I was approaching various accounting and bookkeeping jobs in the same fashion. Setting up accounting spreadsheets for clients to produce the final accounts and tax returns. So I decided to save myself some time and effort and set up some standard bookkeeping templates I could use for all clients.

That is now my business, DIY Accounting, a series of accounting and payroll packages suitable for all self employed and small limited companies that I sell virtually entirely through my website enabling me to work from home.
