Tadley, North Hants
It's my beloved's birthday in a couple of weeks and I'm trying to work out what to get him.
Our laptop is a bit knackered, and could do with updating but all he ever uses it for is Sporcle, FB, football scores/transfer deals etc and emails so I was thinking about an iPad or similar but haven't really got much idea.
I got him an ordinary Kindle a couple of years back but someone told me the Kindle Fire gives access to FB etc so I wondered about perhaps getting that, then of course there's the iPad itself.
Don't really want to spend more than about £250 (that's £10 for every year we've been married which is, in my opinion, more than generous!) ..... anyone give me any info that might help?
Thanking you!!!!

You won't get an standard sized iPad for £250 unless you go for a refurbished one.

I think the iPad mini would be a good present but maybe try dropping hints to see what he thinks.

Kindle Fire HD 32Gb is £199. (16Gb £159). He'll have access to his existing Kindle/Amazon account, and it will do all he wants, with a power charger at £8.99 it's very cost effective.
So £159 + £8.99 = £167.99 which leaves a bit for a nice meal and a 'power charger' on the actual day...

Thanks Nuno - that's probably what I'll do, sounds like it does everything he'd like it to do.

Hi

A laptop/netbook is more flexible but tablet device are more couch potato friendly.

Various tablets I have used:

IPad : very easy to use, looks nice but some websites don't work properly because they use adobe flash(some youtube sites, football sites etc)

Kindle Fire/Google Nexus/other Android based tablets: These Tablets are less restricted than iPads, you can run flash websites, add more memory through storage(on some) even pop in mouse and keyboard cheaply if you so wish

I bought my mum a Sumvision tablet (cheap android based tablet)for around £80, setup for email, streaming chinese movies and playing mahjong...and its pretty fast and good quality tablet

Kindle Fire would probably be the one but you, however you are tied to the Amazon store rather than Google Play store so buying apps and installing from Google Play via a Kindle Fire is a lot trickier...but since your husband has a Amazon account already...oh heck Im making this as clear as mud lol ... Go get the Kindle Fire! :-)

Mail me if you have any more questions....

Why? The Kindle Fire HD has a more restricted app store compared to the Nexus 7, and even with that aside, the Nexus 7 out-performs the Kindle Fire in most other ways. The Nexus 7 even has a free Amazon app in its app store.

I don't think either hubby nor I even really know what apps are - I'm quite sure neither of us would ever use them.
My friend has a Kindle fire and she's going to bring it in at the weekend so I can see if it will do whatever it is that he would want it to do - which isn't really a great deal to be honest!

Apps are pieces of software and games you can download and use on your tablet. The Kindle Fire has about 50,000, the Nexus 7 has about 500,000 as it uses the Google Play store. Some of them cost money, some of them are free, but it gives you the option to explore thousands of little games and apps which can be very useful and addictive.

I would highly recommend the Nexus 7. As it states in that review I posted, the Nexus 7 out-performs the Kindle Fire in pretty much every way. However, the choice is yours!

I think you would use apps if you got one. Even my nan can use apps! (But we have to download them and teach her how to use them first!- Bingo and scrabble are her favourite:eek:)

Have you any HMV stores nearby as they are closing down and you might pick up a good tablet there.

I'd go for something bigger than 7 inches (ok dive in everybody with the "oh err misses" comments).
