Hello all

been reading through the forum and it's such a friendly and knowledgeable group. apologies if this has been answered before but i can't find it...

im in the process of opening a retail (apparel) shop and have been researching EPOS/POS solutions. it's just one shop and two employees so fairly simple.

I landed on Square up and Epos Now as my two narrowed down choices BUT i've just been reading the Barclays Merchant Services literature on their Smartpay Touch system

they seems to do everything Square Up and Epos Now do but you don't need to buy their hardware (just rent the card reader). and you can access the EPOS via a website on your own laptop. And the card reader also has a built in barcode scanner

plus their transaction fees at 1.6% are (slightly) lower than square up or epos now

am i missing something? does anyone have knowledge of any of these three offerings? as a barclays customer for my personal acc i was prob going to open my business account with them too which is leading me to think i should just keep it simple and also use barclays merchant services and their Smartpay Touch system?

thanks in advance for anyone who knows more about this than me

thanks

It looks like Barclaycard charge £29+VAT per month rental for the card reader, which comes to £348+VAT over the 12 month contract. The equivalent Square and SumUp card terminals are one-off payments at a lot less than that, so you'd need to be doing a high volume of transactions for Barclaycard's slightly lower processing fee to work out cheaper.

It looks like Barclaycard charge
What about:
% of transaction?
Transaction fee?
PCI ?
Refund fees?
and others?

If under £1-1.5k per month, systems like SumUp & MyPos offer best value!

You can use Loyverse, which is free and has SumUp payments added. We used Loyverse for about a year with Zettle payments, and it worked very well.

Having both accounts and payments with Barclays wouldn't give you any benefits, as these are all separate businesses (personal, business, and card payments). The Barclays business account is quite basic. I had both Barclays personal and business accounts, and I used the Barclaycard card reader, but I wasn't impressed at all. When comparing online banking, I found Lloyds and Monzo to be a lot better. If you need to deposit cash, go with Lloyds as Monzo charges for each cash deposit.

The issues I had with Barclays: Online banking looks like it was designed 10 years ago. Payees got constantly delated if not used for some time. Constantly had problems with online banking, something didn't work etc, app on other hand did work well.

    Hi there,

I've been through similar research, and I'd like to share some insights. While Barclays Smartpay Touch does seem like a convenient option, I believe EPOS Now stands out as the best comprehensive solution, though it is a paid service. If you decide to go with EPOS Now, I can help you get a 20% discount on their setup. If you're considering a free option to start with, Loyverse is a great choice. It offers robust features for startups and only requires a tablet to run.

When it comes to taking payments, I can help you with our Teya terminal. It's more affordable than both SumUp and Square, with no setup fees or contracts. It is also equipped with a SIM card for remote payments or as a backup if Wi-Fi goes down, and it’s fully touchscreen with receipt printing capability.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance.

Yes, we do. We have acquired a company called Loyverse, which, as Boxlot mentioned above, offers inventory management and many other features that will be perfect for your store. It's also free.

If you’d like, we can have a chat to discuss which solution will be the best for you. I can offer some advice to help you make an informed decision

Hi Folks, we’re a new UK based company looking for small hospitality businesses like food trucks, coffee shops and cafes to test our iPad POS software in return for 2 yrs free usage. We’re also loaning out hardware for the first group of test users. If you’re interested in getting involved you can reach us using [email protected] and we’ll send more details. Thanks - Robin
